I’m down for the information and to be wrong. We really have to get this portal grab right. I understand the excitement of Silas as an individual player, but just worry about roster fit.

I trust our coaches to teach Nait George how to shoot and play defense in a summer more than to teach Silas how to be a better decision maker and passer.

But clearly Silas is the better scorer and overall better talent.
Shooting and defense are harder to teach than passing and decision-making.

All seriousness, the staff has shown to be great teachers of shooting and defense. Those are the two things everyone improves on here. Unless your mechanics are all the way jacked up like Andre’s.

I have been mildly concerned with the assist numbers - my feeling is that if you have passing instincts, you'll get them. You can lead fast breaks, hit-aheads off turnovers or long rebounds, broken plays, offensive rebounds, or making a read on your own iso move. I remember my old coach ripping our point guard for a two-assist game and saying "I could put a dead guy out there and he could get two assists from people bouncing the ball off his (bad word) coffin".

But in high school, Demary did do this on a loaded team, so that's a little more encouraging that he has more potential as a passer than Georgia allowed him to show.

"He averaged 13.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists while at Combine Academy, which went 35–5 and was ranked 25th in the ESPN SCNext poll in Demary Jr.'s senior season there"

24/7 HS scouting report fwiw:

Demary is a potential big lead guard in the making. He plays both on and off the ball right now, approaches the game with a scoring mentality, and does not yet create a ton of easy scoring opportunities for his teammates, but also is not especially turnover prone either. He is at his best scoring the ball from the mid-range and in. He is extremely shifty to the rim, able to maintain his balance while attacking low to the ground, and a crafty finisher with both hands. Hill pull-up game is a definite weapon and he also uses his body well to draw contact and get to the free-throw line. His three-point range is still inconsistent with a ball that is a little hard and flat, but does not have any other glaring mechanical problems. Defensively, he shows flashes of moving his feet but tends to open his toes too easily when defending dribble penetration.

I mean, our shooting hasn’t been that great the last 2 years. AK regressed since Yr 1. McNeeley came in with pedigree as the best shooter in the class but wasn’t that good of a shooter this year.

Absolutely what we need.

Combine Academy is basically one of those fake schools where kids go just to play basketball or other sports. Anyone who lives near in the area would laugh at calling Lincolnton an affluent part of Charlotte like they do on their website. It’s out the sticks. They have had some good players roll thru there, sleezy looking operation though. It’s definitely not a Montverde, Oak Hill type school.

Probably better than his local HS - it couldn't be worse

Newton, RJ Cole, Tyrese Martin, Hawkins, Solo, Diarra.

All those guys got better as shooters. I mean especially Diarra. Lol

Hell Sanogo became a better shooter. You’re disagreeing with me for the sake of wanting to disagree with me as this is silly.

Newton shot 32% from 3 last year. RJ shot better at Howard. Solo and Hawkins came in as shooters and did improve yes.

My point was passing/decision making is easier to develop than shooting and defense. Shooting is mostly a natural skill that can be sharpened, defense is about quickness strength and anticipation that is also more natural. Decision making is more easily influenced by a good staff and system, and our passing/movement system plays to that strength. Look at Diarra’s assist numbers this year as evidence.

That is encouraging. Honestly, a new lead guard who is a facilitator isn't enough. We need a new Forward who can do that as well. The offense doesn't work unless we have facilitators at multiple spots on the floor. The more the better.

It will be interesting to see what we get from Adams, Mullins and Riebe (can he pass like Clingan?). I think Furphy's path to playing time is indeed if he can bring a little Luka like passing ability to the SF position.

Any significance to our coaches following players on Instagram last year? I recall that may have preceded a commitment.

Could be wrong.

Kimani Young just followed Demary.
Does he follow non UConn players?

It’s definitely not nothing

That’s my worry about Silas. He had a 19% assist rate which isn’t that great for a PG.

For reference, Newton was 34% his last year at ECU and never dropped below 27%. RJ Cole was the same at Howard and for his career. Diarra was at 35% this year.

Mahaney was at like 14% for St Mary’s and 19% for us this year.

We’ll have a lot of mouths to feed in next years offense and could use a guy who is a table setter moreso than someone who will be competing with them for shots.

I agree. Hurley told him you can come here and do whatever the you want. You don’t even have to pass in this offense
