Providence Post Game Thread

What it comes down to with this team is Silas becoming more of a primary scorer, along with expediting Mullins into his primary role. We need him launching at the same rate Solo does when he's in. Solo may not make many shots, but he finds them. Now we need Mullins to find them and make them.

Karaban was a C- at best. He was 3-14 from the field and 0 FT attempts. Rebounding was fine and seven assists from a forward os always very good. But he has got to start shooting better. He missed a bunch of open shots tonight which were good looks. He 2-11, 4-10, and 3-14 his past three games. And Jamier Jones abused Karaban all night. On D, Karaban couldn't stop a freshman.
I agree. Karaban and Solo almost shot us out of the win.

One way or another, this can’t continue. Either we start playing better or we’re losing some games. But we’re not going to win ugly forever
I don't know. We're getting pretty good at it. As much as I want UConn to win, I do watch college basketball to be entertained. It really hasn't been very entertaining lately. Like many of you, I don't like that I'm just wishing the game would be over when there's still about 10 minutes left. And the sad part is I'm not sure if I'm actually exaggerating or not.

We’re more talented than most other teams, so I think we will continue to win close and ugly games, unless our shooting and turnovers improve.

I didn't even know Dalen Cuff was a former player, he used to host ESPN's cbb studio crew that did halftime reports/game breaks and he was teeing it up for the former coaches/players

When I watch our squad against other teams, I'm not sure our talent advantage jumps out. With no Mullins, it's not like we have first round picks swirling out there. PC has some solid talent.

Yet he’ll still get 35 minutes a game and Hurley will act like it’s okay.

Columbia, I believe.

I find Reed to be to be at the top of the list of most disappointing players this year. I had high hopes there. He just looks lethargic. It looks like he may have put weight on. He plays with so little intention. Then you have Eric come in and he doesn't have the presence, but he plays hard and very active.

Whoof - 41 in OKP. You can bet the analysts will be auto ruling us out as having any chance come the dance. Maybe that's a good thing. Our metrics for our record are awful.

This is a weird season.
You know this a tough league. Cellar dweller Marquette is spanking Cteighton by 30 in the second half right now. Marquette looks like a top 10 team tonight.

That one dude on Providence, looks and plays like a mini Luka. It was kinda funny to watch. I think our combination of experience, toughness, skill, and coaching/system, is better than almost all other teams. Arizona clearly has more talent than us but we almost won.

Yes, because he makes big plays when needed and because Coach trusts him. That's how rotations work.
If someone played in every single big play and took every single big shot, they’re going to make some of them.

Ross made a big play at the end of last game, too.

People hate the Calhoun comparison. But he never trusted and leaned on a player that made as many mistakes as Karaban without repercussions. Itd be like if he couldn’t take Josh Boone off the court.

Of all the bad things we witnessed tonight, I was most alarmed by how frequent we let Providence drive right to the basket with little resistance. Boy did that bring back memories of last season. In the first half they defended pretty well, but in the second half they couldn't seem to keep anyone in front of them.

Granted there were a few outstanding defensive stands in the second half, but I'm going to have nightmares of seeing Sellers blow right by whoever was trying to defended him, getting right to the basket. He was just 3 for 10, but wore a hole at the foul line shooting 12-13.

It was one of the weirdest games I've ever watched. If you edit the tape showing just the good plays UConn did on both ends of the floor it would be a great watch. But the tape that's cut to the floor consist of some of the worst UConn basketball I've seen in quite some time.

As I mentioned in my other posts in this thread, the announcers just made the game even a tougher watch, and I'm one who rarely ever complains about the announcers. They were just that bad. I should have turned the sound off. I hope that network realizes this and never pairs those two together. The one who couldn't stop talking about Providence saving their season should never be put on television ever again. Never! Never! And Never!

AI summary:

For a UConn fan, this was a gritty, uneven win that showed both depth and resilience. The Huskies didn’t shoot particularly well overall (45% from the field), and several starters struggled to find rhythm, but they won the possession battle and eventually wore Providence down. UConn finished with 87 points, out-rebounded the Friars 37–35, and generated 23 assists, a big number that reflects ball movement even when shots weren’t falling cleanly.

The story of the night was the frontcourt and bench impact. Tarris Reed Jr. was a force inside, going 8-for-9 from the floor with 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks, completely changing the game when he was on the court. Eric Reibe was flawless offensively (6-for-6, 14 points, 8 boards), giving UConn interior efficiency Providence couldn’t match. UConn also dominated the offensive glass (15 offensive rebounds), creating extra chances that steadily broke Providence’s resistance.

The guards had a mixed night shooting, but they made winning plays. Silas Demary Jr. and Malachi Smith combined for 13 assists and hit timely threes, while Alex Karaban filled the stat sheet with 9 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 blocks despite a rough shooting night. Providence got strong efforts from Jamiir Jones and Jaylin Sellers, but UConn’s depth, rim protection, and extra possessions ultimately decided it. Not a masterpiece — but the kind of physical, grown-up win that good teams stack as the season moves on.
It's just weird how Reed gets so many boards on both sides; but rarely dunks in close. Odd to me

Would have loved to see Demary / Smith / Karaban take any of Solo's brick 3s tonight. If you're that hurt, get closer to the rim or pass the ball.

There's no denying he played a great game against Nova but he's 11/45 (24.4%) from 3 this month across 7 games

Point guards: 27 points, 12 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 0 turnovers, 50% FG, 7-9 from three

Centers: 33 points, 14 rebounds, 6 blocks, 14-15 FG

Karaban and Solo: 25 points but 8-32, 4-15 from three

Stewart and Ross: 2 points, 0-4

Needless to say, shoutout to the point guards and centers

Dumb game. But 20 wins does look shiny. As always, let’s go Huskies!
Great post and so true

Karaban is shooting 48/40/80 on volume this season and is the most important off-ball piece in this offense. What are you even talking about right now?
I don’t love Karaban or Ball. However, they are both extremely important to this team and our hopes of winning another title. Karaban and Ball both forced way too many shots tonight. No need to force shots when you have other capable shooters on this team. Silas needs to shoot more.
