Providence Post Game Thread

Things have not looked good lately and it's 5 out of the last 6 games where things are a major struggle with the schedule about to get a lot tougher.

There's a little of it being the Big East and the way it's reffed and how we're scouted but it's pretty clear to me what our big problem is. Solo and Tarris have been dealing with injury for a long time and then you tack on Mullins in and out of the lineup. Solo shouldn't have even been playing tonight, I've dealt with what he's going through with his wrist over the years and it's awful. He won't get any sleep tonight because the wrist will be stiff as a board and even the slightest movement will be excruciating pain and it's going to be awful for him for at least the next few days. He played really badly but he absolutely gutted it out tonight and still hit a couple of big shots. He's a tough guy.

Our next biggest problem ties into our biggest problem. Jaylin and Ross are giving us nothing on the offensive end. Their defense has been good overall but even that really bad tonight...

Hurley is stuck, he knows Solo shouldn't have been playing tonight but he felt he needed him to get the win because there's no Mullins and Jaylin and Ross are big donuts out there.

I really want a 1 seed but I'm okay dropping a couple of it gets us healthy.

It was nice to see Reibe play well and Malachi had a great game despite missing another wide open layup. I want Silas to be in aggressive mode scoring the ball. We really need him to take over and he's fully capable, he's one of the best players in the country.

20-1 but we have major issues surrounding health and the play of the two junior forwards.

I don’t think so mainly because he doesn’t have options. What is he going to do, sit them and play Stewart and Ross ? Both Ball and Karaban can make plays and score. When your bench can’t you need to just go with the guys who can even if they make bonehead plays.

If he didn't expect for either Stewart or Ross to be able to help as juniors, they shouldn't have been brought back.

As previously mentioned, great game for the point guards. Smith had best game in a while except for that missed layup down the stretch. I was hoping that Ball would stop shooting but he made some nice midrange shots late in game. He shot 27% with four turnovers. Yikes.

Team needs to improve FTs. Loved the way Reed redeemed himself with that steal after missing two FTs. But at least they win.

Reibe and Malachi were huge tonight. Malachi looks so much better when he isn’t the only ball handler on the floor.

One thing why do so many of our guy bite on the pump fake. I swear it’s like every time they had someone buried late in the clock all they had to do was stand there one more second and then bam leave your feet and give the guy an opening.

They’ve been bored since Texas. They haven’t played one team worth fearing. Not one. They playing in a quasi mid major conference this season.
So we are such a well oiled machine that we can just slow play the season? This team was an 8 seed last year. Toying around with the BE then going up against real teams is not what I would call a good way to set up for the real season. Hurley runs intense practices and expects kids to take that to the floor. I guess we'll find out soon enough @Creigton (who's getting pumped by Marquette right now) and @StJ.

I know the 2023 recruiting class was terrible overall, but its very disappointing two 6'7", fairly athletic wings that have been at a high level D1 program for 3 years have zero semblance of an offensive game. Jaylin and Jayden's lack of development is pretty bad at this point, they literally don't provide anything on offense.
The lack of development from the 2023 class and the misses from the 2024 class are rearing their ugly heads.

To develop you have to have room to make mistakes and be aggressive. They haven’t had that in their 3 years here. Tonight continued that.

Ross had 1 turnover today. And it got him benched for the whole half.

It could be not necessarily the 1 turnover, but the fact that he’s not doing anything else on O when he’s out there.

Solo with the turnovers, bad shot selection especially with a bum wrist was bad. At one point he was responsible for 4 consecutive empty possessions via turnovers or stupid shots. Providence scored on 3 of them.

I am tired of hearing about the wrist. I didn't hear about it last game when he played well. If it's that big an issue why is he playing?

I hear ya, you think it’s good enough, I think it needs some improvement to get to the ultimate goal.

I won’t argue it. But we’re only giving up 64 points a game on 39% shooting. That’s elite. We need to put the ball in the basket more often. We went 8minutes + in the first half without a field goal. And that’s been the trend. The defense has saved us this season.

1. They keep winning
2. They're winning and there's near unanimity they are playing below their talent level
3. A 2-headed monster at Center tonight except for Reed's FT's.
4. A breakout game by Smith shooting and passing. Then he bricks the layups amd misses front end of 1 and 1.
5. Smith and Demary with a combined zero TO's.
6. Karaban with another brutal shooting night, but gets a bunch of boards and 7 assists.
7. Saw some Demary, Ball and Smith lineup for extended time.
8. Two games in a row Ross was on tje floor at the end for defense.
9. I'll go to bed without needing alcohol to ease the "pain" from the game but melatonin will be involved.
10. Nothing here but only having 9 comments seemed weird.

Please don’t start the putting words in my mouth thing you love to do. I didn’t say they were a “well oiled machine” nor do I disagree this is not a good thing.

But if we’re being honest the players know as well as we do that they can go 18-2/19-1 in conference without ever playing their B game. It’s why I prefer a conference with other actual contenders in it. They need to see danger. And no one in the BE outside of maybe St John’s is capable of providing that this year. They need to self generate it. I’m just not sure they are capable.

If there ever was a burn the tape game that was it. In addition to being a horrible game to watch, if I never hear those two announcers again, I'll be a happy man. How many times were they talking about it being such a great win for Providence if they were to pull it out. Good grief! I hope they never pair those two together again.
They still think Providence is going to the tournament.

It could be not necessarily the 1 turnover, but the fact that he’s not doing anything else on O when he’s out there.
This was the first game I actually saw him be aggressive in putting the ball on the floor and it led to two really good dump off passes that led to fouls for Reed and Reibe. He had another assist that I missed.

So that’s 3 really good passes that got thrown out once he had one bad turnover. Thats the type of stuff that’s going to frustrate me as a fan rooting for these guys.

They’ve been bored since Texas. They haven’t played one team worth fearing. Not one. They’re playing in a quasi mid major conference this season. I’m afraid it’s going to come back to haunt us. They need an actual challenge.
Danny needs to have a chat with Mark Few about what he does to try and keep his Zags focused and spanking teams by 20-30 during the WCC conference season.

When complaining about FT shooting and TOs, tonight those weren't a "team" issue. Take out Ball's 4 TOs and team only had six, which is excellent. Take out Tarris's FTs, and team was 15-19 (79%), also very good.

It's a problem when two starters have big issues in key areas, but FTs/TOs were pretty much limited to just them. They can work on those issues.

I look at the fact that even though our guys didn't shoot well, we stuck with the plan - 26 assists, won the OReb battle, had 11 more shots than PeeCee. Didn't panic. All of those attributes will help in March/April regardless of what the naysayers think.
