I think it's more likely he enlisted his friend to help perpetuate the myth that he had a steady girlfriend (supply you own reason). I haven't re-read the deadspin story but this narrative was out there for a while. Maybe too many people in his life asked to meet her/talk to her etc., so he and his friend decided to kill her off and reap whatever sympathies were out there. After all, grandparents dying is a pretty standard fact of life for kids in their 20's (often earlier), but double down with a dead girlfriend and his stoic response of going out there and playing = ND legend. Very cynical, but there you go. I hope this kid spills the beans since he's being thrown under the bus.

Sure sounds like his friend created this fake girl and T'eo was in on it early if not from the start. I don't know why Swarbrick and ND are doubling down on the story that he was duped all along. My guess is ND found out it was all BS a while ago and enjoyed all the wonderful press T'eo and the University were getting so they just rolled with it. This is going to be very bad for the young man and ND.
