Eh, it's complicated for ESPN. I'm guessing some reporters and a few higher-ups knew the real story, but the producers putting together the broadcast and the pregame didn't know. They were probably waiting for confirmation, I'm guessing. What's more interesting to me is whether anybody at Notre Dame knew the truth and still went along with pumping the hoax.

One of the aspects I haven't seen mentioned is if Teo was hoaxed, why did he invent so many stories about how they met, etc? Why would he lie to his parents about his imaginary girlfriend? This is BS of the finest kind.
I'd say it's one of two things - a) completely fake from the start, he was in on it b) he got duped for a month or three and then decided to keep it as a lie to save face.

Because he wanted everyone to believe he had a serious girlfriend.

So I guess the possibility of him being gay is one thing. BUT what if he's straight, and used the dead girlfriend story to get some sympathy tail??? That works right? "*sniff* I'm so sad, I don't know if I will ever be able to love a woman again!" "Oh you poor thing! I know what'll make you feel better - let me get my sister..."

I would respect him for that strategy, but I'm not sure he's even smart enough to have watched Animal House and learned it.

Notre Dame is almost too all-in on the kid's side - whatever they know, and whatever their investigator found, I'm guessing it points toward the kid being a victim of a hoax.

Looks like this has a ways to go before it plays out - some of us need to get together to buy the movie rights to this sucker.

They're all in on the kids side because if the kids story isn't right, they all committed fraud. In for a dime, in for a dollar.

I disagree. They easily could've distanced themselves from him.
But now they're all in. If they lied today, their image is toast.

The only way that Notre Dame committed any sort of fraud is if they created the story or somehow perpetuated it after finding out it was untrue. (And the fact that they knew on 12/26 and didn't say anything isn't evidence of any deception - anyone who thinks UConn or any other school would have come racing out to the press on December 26th is delusional.)

And if the kid made all of this up...it's beyond weird and the press should feel awful for not fact-checking a blessed thing, but beyond that, who cares?

You really think the starting middle linebacker for Notre Dame needs a story to get laid?

I just saw a clip of jack swarbrick crying about this. Really crying that teo would never be able to trust the same way again. Literally made me laugh out loud. This is the same dude that was screaming for the big east to make up its mind so nd could move forward. Gotta love it.

Interesting that Teo supposedly got the call in early Dec, but didn't tell ND until the 26th. Why did he wait so long?

You really believe he was "duped". makes no sense. He is probably having trouble coming out the closet. Who knows, but mother Fugger talking about sending roses and being up all night on the phone make no sense.
