I have no idea if he will keep it up, but certainly an impressive start for Mr. Lin.

It is very refreshing to see a player succeed with legitimate basketball skill and plays, rather than the normal NBA paradigm of rewarding plays with strength and speed with foul calls when they deliberately crash into defenders (LeBron, DWade, John Wall etc)

The great majority of Taiwanese are ethnically Chinese and speak Mandarin. The official name of Taiwan is the 'Republic of China'.
If you ask the Chinese they will tell you Taiwan still belongs to China. Anyway the Knicks have been a welcome distraction from the UCONN mess. Funny how both Lin and Novak were lighting it up. Both had career games against UCONN.

The bigger question is what will Dantoni do when Baron Davis is ready? He starts practicing with the team Thursday. My guess is he'll have to start Davis. But that feels like a mistake.

As long as he plays well Lin will get his minutes. He is worth big marketing dollars if he continues. As we speak Dolan is learning the conversion rate for the Chinese Yuan.

Of the hundreds of asians I've met in my life, in school, work, and play, I've met very few who have a very high self confidence level. Lots of high achievers, but few grab the bull by the horns type.

I don't know about the last sentence, but there was that whole uproar over the Tiger Mom thing a while back. Though it's probably fair to say the author created the uproar in order to sell her book.

Perhaps, you would like to enlighten further upon what you mean by "not grab the bull by the horns types". I am taking you to mean leaders/Type A personalities.

The ones in gangs definitely do not lack confidence or bravado and are more than willing to "grab the bull by the horns". They are not exactly the highest of achievers though and probably not the type you would interact with (even I try not to).

I also know quite a few traders/corporate types that will also "grab the bull by the horn" and are type A personalities.

I've met plenty who are leaders at work, in clubs, etc.

The only thing Lin has going for him is that D'Antonie's offense is very point guard centric. Melo may not have a choice. (Melo may also come off looking like a bad guy if he ballhogs.)

The Knicks' ownership must be beside themselves thinking about the huge marketing potential of having a Chinese-American point guard given the huge untapped Asian (especially Chinese) community in NYC and tri-state area. Americans have this habit of putting all Asians into a single category which is so far from the truth. There are similarities among all the Asian cultures but not all are different. For example, culturally many Asians are taught to be polite and not make huge scenes in public. In America, that might be interpreted as meek or whatever. In America, people with the loudest mouth and usually the rudest get their voices heard.

I live in CA where there are many different Asians. They come from different backgrounds and there are all kinds. It is the same in Asia. Your friends could very well be the PHD types that don't go around with a loud mouth. I would suggest travel a little and see different cultures for yourself. It always amazes me how little average Americans know about other cultures when most people aboard know a thing or two about Americans.

Asian American and Asians from Asia are completely different. The only similarity is they look similar. Jeremy Lin is an American first and foremost. He grew up in Palo Alto, CA. He is an American kid with both American and Chinese culture upbringing. There is a quiet confidence about him and I am really looking forward to see where this insanity will take us.

I've read this three times and I still have no clue what your point is, especially the bolded part. It reads like the wrapper on the chopsticks you get in a Chinese restaurant. Just when it appears to make a glimmer of sense it completely belies the apparent premise.

If anything (at least for first generation Chinese parents) most Chinese parents push excellence in education and music while discouraging their kids from pursuing athletics. Chinese people have some interesting concepts about which careers are honorable and which ones are viewed as less respectable. Acting and athletics are considered at the bottom. These activities are also seen as distractions which take focus away from academics.

This makes Lin's achievements even more remarkable. He has achieved top academic achievement (which I'm sure his parents pushed) while also reaching the highest level of athletics (which is probably more where his heart is). Most children of foreign-born Chinese parents have to sacrifice their own interests in order to live up to their parents' expectations.

I can tell you from first hand experience. My wife has zero interest in my daughter's athletic achievements but is very concerned with her school work. She thinks sports are a major waste of time. If my daughter made-millions playing professional sports yet failed to get an MBA, my wife would be very disappointed. American culture is much more sports focused. Lin has managed to achieve an amazing balance.
