OT: Hurricane Irma

It's gonna be bleak for a while here in Tallahassee...my son has done the ladder work boarding up my windows...but we expect to be without power for a long time...no water, lights...and limited ability to travel (when Kate hit with 85 mph winds) we could'nt leave the house for days because our exit street was blocked by trees.

We have a had a nice "trough" of few Florida landfalls since Charley, Jeanne, et al tore up the state in 2005....but every puppy has their day and every dog has to pay.

Be well friend. You seem like a veteran of these storms so I am sure you will be fine.

Looks like Marco Island is about to be slaughtered.

How many people here are actual scientists who understand the models and their variables?

*raises hand*

Of those people, how many have written and used complex computer models?

*raises hand*

He is not wrong.

I am, and he is wrong. The models simply don't explore parameter space and some of the parameters they do enter are wrong. Nor are the models fine enough to make reliable long-term predictions of the evolution of a complex system (recall the "butterfly effect").

This one in Miami didn't fare so well:

Roofs ripped off newer structures, cranes crashing off roofs of high rise developments, 1m people without power and flooding greater than 2'.

And people thought the eye going up the west side would "spare" Miami.

Recent models show more of a veering right off the coast instead of a direct hit, but I'm watching to see what the impact is on Key West. Worst case, there is no more Key West similar to what's left of St Maarten.

A friend's daughter and her boyfriend were trapped in St. Maarten. They flew out last night on a private plane.
pic is when they were allowed to go back to their room to collect belongings.

Last time I saw Key West it was entirely covered. Not much coverage since. I hope they are okay.

Wind is whipping like crazy. Proper Hurricane shutters are pretty much the best investment ever. So glad to have them right now. Lucky to have underground wires and live in a neighborhood next to a Fire Department / YMCA and School. Had power / internet / cable whole time so far.

I just saw a webcam of the port of Miami area - it doesn't look that bad. Trees are still standing, etc.

They still have lights down there.

Definitely a different situation than places like Tortola where the trees that are still standing have no leaves or branches.

Cuba really took the hit that was meant for Florida. They took a Cat. 5 landfall then had the storm sit close enough to the coast that the land didn't drastically weaken it. Going to be very interesting what information comes out of there over the next month or so.

The in-laws returned to their home today ~ noon. Although they live 2 and 3 blocks from the beach in Naples, they are saying no water damage (1/2" in garage). No electric, etc, and may need to boil water. Thank goodness, but go figure.
