OT: Hurricane Irma

Recent models show more of a veering right off the coast instead of a direct hit, but I'm watching to see what the impact is on Key West. Worst case, there is no more Key West similar to what's left of St Maarten.

A friend's daughter and her boyfriend were trapped in St. Maarten. They flew out last night on a private plane.
pic is when they were allowed to go back to their room to collect belongings.

Last time I saw Key West it was entirely covered. Not much coverage since. I hope they are okay.

Wind is whipping like crazy. Proper Hurricane shutters are pretty much the best investment ever. So glad to have them right now. Lucky to have underground wires and live in a neighborhood next to a Fire Department / YMCA and School. Had power / internet / cable whole time so far.

I just saw a webcam of the port of Miami area - it doesn't look that bad. Trees are still standing, etc.

They still have lights down there.

Definitely a different situation than places like Tortola where the trees that are still standing have no leaves or branches.

Cuba really took the hit that was meant for Florida. They took a Cat. 5 landfall then had the storm sit close enough to the coast that the land didn't drastically weaken it. Going to be very interesting what information comes out of there over the next month or so.

The in-laws returned to their home today ~ noon. Although they live 2 and 3 blocks from the beach in Naples, they are saying no water damage (1/2" in garage). No electric, etc, and may need to boil water. Thank goodness, but go figure.

My wife's sister and niece's family got out of tampa at the last moment, and are staying with family in Atlanta. Neighbors checked both of their houses in Tampa and they are in good shape. No flooding, no trees down, one cracked window.

Aircraft carrier, mini armada on the way to help after Irma

>>With two warships already bound south into the Caribbean on Hurricane Irma relief missions, the Navy announced Friday it has put the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, two amphibious assault ships and a destroyer on standby to help federal, state or local authorities in post-Irma humanitarian relief efforts, “if requested.” The USS Iwo Jima and USS New York, left their home port in Mayport, Florida, earlier this week for Norfolk, Virginia to pick up more than 300 Marines and sailors with the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and II Marine Expeditionary Force, according to an announcement by the Fleet Forces Command. As of Friday, they were headed back south.<<

>>Meantime, the Navy said, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Farragut was already “conducting local operations” and has been ordered to join the group. From the four ships, the statement said, the Navy can deploy three “Super Stallion” helicopters, which have been used in heavy-lift assault operations in Afghanistan and Iraq; and 24 multi-mission medium-lift Seahawk MH 60 combat helicopters, which can be used for search and rescue missions.<<
