Most people disagree with me on this, but I consider Back to the Future the greatest Movie Franchise of all time. Needless to say I'm pretty excited about today. It usually makes for some pretty good debate though so fire away, tell me why I'm wrong.

Here's my case for Back to the future:

  • Continuity: The interplay between the 3 movies is exceptionally well done. I love the parallels of Biff getting dumped with Manure, Marty playing the same shooter, the western in Biff's casino suite in 2 giving Marty the idea to use the stove plate cover in 3. The Statler Horses/Car Dealership business. The list goes on. The movies are beautifully woven together.
  • The scene when Doc sends Marty back to the future in 1955 only to have him immediately return for help culminating in Christopher Lloyd saying Great Scott and passing out is, in my opinion, the best 10 minutes in movie history. It's perfect. The time crossroads that hold the whole series together.
  • Power of Love is one of the most iconic movie songs of all time.
What would you put against it and why?

Also, if you are a Back To the Future Geek like I am, happy watching tonight.

Godfather. And nothing even close.

That being said, BackFuture was great fun.

Love Alex P. Keaton and The Godfather, but I'll second Lord of the Rings as the best.

What separates it from the other two for me was the sad realization that the Return of the King was really the final film and that there would be no more.

Godfather by far. I also enjoyed the Lethal Weapons, Die Hard, Rocky and Beverly Hills Cop.

Indiana Jones 1-3 are great. Star Wars franchise is great, but aside from the first 2, nothing really great. I am going with the Godfather. 1 and 2 were just ridiculously good. The casting in 3 was horrific.

The Godfather (the original franchise)
The first three Star Wars (episodes 4-6)
Fast/Furious (though what was up with 2 and 3?)
Harry Potter. There's something about the 8 H.P. movies that I always watch from the time I land on it to the end and Heaven help the outside world if there is a Harry Potter weekend on ABC Family.
Same with Lethal Weapon, Die Hard)
Ocean's 11-13
(Though 12 was absolutely the weakest).
The View Askew franchise (Clerks, Mall Rats, Chasing Amy, Dogma. Could have done without Clerks II or Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back).
Superman (with Christopher Reeve and Gene Hackman)
Spiderman (with Tobey McGuire, Kirsten Dunst, and James Franco)
Rocky - Rocky IV (Rocky V and Rocky Balboa don't exist to me).

I can't include the Indiana Jones franchise, because I truly only continually enjoy Raiders and Crusade. I've never gotten through Crystal Skull and I was never a real big fan of Doom.

Also all this is not saying that Back to the Future wasn't really really good (FYI, the reason part II and III are intertwined so well is because they were filmed simultaneously. They shot the city square scenes from 1885 [Part III] before flooding it for the reflecting pool in 2015 [part II]). Just pointing out there is A LOT of competition for the best franchise.

Under the OP's premise, if at least one film poops the bed, then that series is out of contention.

Godfather 3; Out
On her Majesties Secret Service (George Lasenby - or for that matter the Dalton Bonds); Out
Rocky V; Out
Star Wars Episodes I-III, Out
Clooney's nipple suited Batman, Out
Superman: the Quest for Peace -way Out.

I don't really have a favorite, but if you announced that you were coming out with a new movie in any franchise would it rival the new Star Wars buzz?

No.

So there's your answer.

I said this in another thread on the Entertainment board, but Star Wars VII will likely crush all first weekend records. They're selling tickets 2 months in advance!

If the question is what franchise makes the most money, yes. If the question is what franchise has the best movies it's a hell no.

Sold out 2 months in advance, people are scalping them on eBay and Craigslist.
