Correct, it's impossible to call a perfect game. But I do think the game situation requires consideration. BYU was dead. 4th and 10 backed up against its goal line. Quarterback is sacked almost for a safety. In that situation, a very questionable call brings BYU up from the grave.
Have you seen all the replay angles. If you have, then total disagreement with you. And, disagree with your premise that ref calls should be based on situations. Are you serious?

I don’t know why but it seems that officiating at almost every level has really been bad this year. I went to a Wesleyan game a couple of weeks back and the calls were so bad the refs should have been embarrassed. NFL guys seem to be inventing calls. It’s one thing to get a call wrong but yikes, there was a no play called in a game that cancelled a fumble for an illegal snap.

I saw a few angles and I didn't think it was a hold worth calling. I've seen much worse go without a flag. The OL could have been called for holding too. Even if it were 50/50, I admit, I don't want such a drastic game changing call called. Just like at the end of basketball games, you'd rather let the guys play even if it gets more physical then let the refs get whistle happy.

What's a penalty in the first minute should be one in the last minute and players want consistency so they know how they need to play the game.

If officials let the grays come into their handling of a game, then they bring everyone down that slippery slope with them.

That is true in the abstract but almost never in fact. How many times do refs ignore penalties on say Hail Marys. It’s almost an unwritten rule in basketball that you don’t call anything but the most egregious fouls in the final seconds of a one score game. There is even a term for it.

Not denying those things happen, but they shouldn't.

They shouldn't but of course they do because we live in a very competitive world. Basketball, football, soccer, guys are pulling each others' jerseys all the time. If they called every single infraction there'd be constant whistles on every play. You can't call that when BYU is flatlining.

Once refs call something consistently, the players adapt and the game cleans up.

That's not how it works. You push the envelope and get away with as much as you can until you can't. Like I said, call the OL holding and the penalties offset. BYU didn't deserve to be let off the matt.

Stop making stuff up to fit your narrative.

This isn’t golf where guys call penalties on themselves. Heck violating the rules is a strategic component of many basketball games. It is part of most games if not so blatantly.

Your missing or ignoring the point. High level players in any sport indeed adapt to the tightness or looseness of the whistle. The issue is when there's a lack of consistency.

As I used to tell my kids a personal foul isn’t a sin it’s a just an indication of your effort.
I never coached American football but I played for a coach that viewed a penalty as breaking form and you could be benched for it . That’s a 180 deg difference in philosophy.
However football requires an adherence to discipline and form beyond the other sports and penalties can be difficult to overcome.. Where hammering a guy instead of giving him an uncontested layup only costs you one personal and plants the seed.that nothing will be easy.
