All true, but the powers that be in North Carolina will not force UNC to be a have-not when a conference move would be in their best interest.

Right. I think it didn’t pass this year but there was a bill in the Carolina legislature to require UNC to play NC State annually and ECU and Appalachian State home and home on a rotating basis. (1 each year, not both). If you think UNC is leaving NC State high and dry like UCLA did to Cal think again.

I guess you can make any criteria you want. Heck in the 1960s the NIT was much more highly regarded than the NCAA. Until the mid-70s it wasn’t unusual for teams to select it over the NCAA if they got invited to both. The NCAA was limited to conference champs plus a handful of Independents. Most of the original Big East were Independents. A few were in sort of quasi-leagues from time to time. More akin to the Little 3 than the Big 10, if you will. A bunch of teams in the same area who played each other because they were nearby so they gave themselves a name. Then there were teams that really were Indy. UNC gets conference champion points from the 1950s. So does UConn. Georgetown was Independent until the Big East was formed I believe. It was in the 1970s at least.

I think we should consider giving points for teams that wear blue.

With whom are you angry? Whose face got slapped, and who did the slapping?

SMU got its ducks in a row, its administration acted in what it perceived to be its own best interests, and over the near term it's paying for the privilege of ACC membership.

UConn could have done the same but didn't. Was it a lack of imagination or strategic vision, or did UConn unwittingly dodge a bullet?

Will SMU's instant gratification be worth it over the long term? If it finds itself in a rapidly deteriorating ACC and is orphaned, then maybe not. If its fractures heal and ACC endures, then SMU's move was genius.
 
I think a blown-up ACC will still be much stronger than the current AAC, so in that sense, SMU made a smart move. However, it is unrealistic to think the ACC is going to retain all of its current members. The ACC might become a slightly stronger version of what the original Conference USA and/or the original AAC was. That is a very realistic possibility. That is still better than what the current AAC is.

And it was their previous AD who as commissioner made all these deals with ESPN to protect his sons job with Raycom.
So North Carolina is to blame for the bad contracts.

I'll ignore the legal matters here and just comment that it would be absolutely nutz if SMU/Cal/Stanf stay while Wake/Duke/BC/Syracuse are jettisoned.

Every time someone posts something like this they show that A) they do not remotely understand the economics of college sports post NIL, and B) that they do not remotely understand the academic and financial mission of elite academic universities.

Peter Cordelli's source appears to be one of the UNC Board of Trustees.

"Trustee Dave Boliek, a former chairman, said after the meeting there was an "imbalance in the budget" that required shifting dollars from other fund balances to cover the cost of athletics. He said the board hasn't been given a strategy on how UNC will move forward.

Boliek said he wants UNC to join a higher-revenue league.

"I am advocating for that," he said. "That's what we need to do. We need to do everything we can to get there. Or the alternative is the ACC is going to have to reconstruct itself. I think all options are on the table."

Every time someone posts something like this they show that they secretly wish for their school's athletic department to be downgraded to actual Big East Level. (Is that how this works?)

You just witnessed Cal and flipping Stanford accept what amounts to a bowl of soup and a pat on the back as payment for inclusion in The ACC. Are Vandy and NW more elite academically than Stanford? Is their mission more noble than that of The Cardinal? The day you seem to pine for, where teams voluntarily leave the conferences that they have been members of for 100 years may still come, but it is not here yet.

A great way to get the low level schools to say we will take 10M (or some other amount) if you let us stay. Maybe they add kickers for wins, ships, etc.
 
This may be a mashup. Months ago, the magnificent 7 met to discuss breaking away together to form a smaller conference with, hopefully, the same money but fewer mouths to feed. North Carolina politics will throw in a monkey wrench…. And it won’t happen , I don’t think. In the end though, UNC was the only one not approving the ACC suing.

How many times are you or @John going to make the same pointless complaints? We are not in the Big 10. WE GET IT. You have never provided an ounce of insight on that topic that we all don't know already.

Now you just crap on UConn on this board, and it is getting old. If being a UConn fan makes you this miserable, go root for another school rather than spew your misery all over this board.
