Hockey and Lacrosse to an extent, seem to be sports, that lower middle class kids are playing in increased numbers. The upwardly mobile aspect of these sports probably does factor into the the sacrifices parents make to play.
Size and Speed and the degree of competition have limited the potential for sports like football or basketball for most kids.
In hockey ,skill ,skating ability, and the limited numbers , can somewhat off-set those factors.
I worked with a circle of hockey enthusisists who claimed that playing hockey in college could be a real tool in success after graduation.
You become part of the fraternity. I don't know if that is true or not but belief is really the only requirement. Why else would a parent get their kid up at 4:00 AM to get available ice time.
