New school commitments by Transfers

I don’t really understand why Sam would choose Virginia. They aren’t likely to be competitive in the next couple of years. I understand they probably have the masters program she wanted, but it seems like she could have gone to a ‘better’ program.
Perhaps she's accepted that her academics will be more important in her professional (non-basketball) life and collegiate basketball success is secondary.

This is her home school and before going to college she frequently attended UVA games.

She gets to play in front of family and friends and probably will get a lot of playing time.

I am happy for her as a fan of hers but I will miss her at ND. Such an easy kid to root for and even when things were not going her way she always gave her all.

Sad to see her in another uniform but she had to go elsewhere to be her best self.

Not every decision will be based on athletics. There is life after basketball and she is likely putting that first, and get to do it in her own backyard with her family being able to see her a lot. Plus she will play a lot. They have a new coach who seems to relate well with her players.

And there it is -

Wah hoo wah. We now have 2 top 30 players (Mir being the other). Maybe this is the beginning of a turnaround.
BTW - can anyone explain what happened to Sam (I’m talkin’ to you ND posters). She went from the top HS recruit, to a top 10 recruit, to a freshman starter, to a bench player. I know an injury was involved, but what a precipitous fall. Anyway, hope she can turn things around with the Hoos. I’ll definitely be renewing my season tickets!

Not a lot of better academic schools she could have gone to… and UVA is just down the road from her home. With the difficulties she’s had in college basketball, I’m guessing being close to family trumped all other options

Short version is - injuries and Maddy Westbeld coming in at the same position.

Also, the coaching change. Brunelle signed for Muffet and Beth Cunningham was the lead assistant recruiting her. I never got the sense Ivey saw her as one of her core players. Probably Muffet's offense was a better fit for Sam, too.

I always thought she would be fine if she if she could get consistent PT but injuries and only playing in short spurts off the bench made it impossible for her to get into any sort of groove.

I was gonna say something snarky like hopefully UVA can move ahead of Longwood and ODU in tbe hierarchy of wbb programs in the state. Then I remembered the cavs dusted Duke by double digits the last time we played.

Agree, plus being close to home looked like it was high on her list also.

Agree with this synopsis. Have gone into a longer analysis over on The Bench for ND die-hards, but will add a very few other thoughts:

- When Sam stopped growing she found herself in tweener land. A 6'2" face-the-basket specialist who could shoot the eyes out but really didn't have the foot speed or handles to create her own shot and/or defend wings.
Westbeld can create her own shot, rebound in traffic and Sonia Citron defended wings.

- No one gives more of herself to a program and university. From the get go, she was setting up her own interview shows, talking at student forums, pushing all things Irish. And her plans are to graduate this summer from ND before becoming a UVA grad student. She's all in whatever she undertakes.

- I still thought Sam could make a huge impact as a super sub, but injuries kept throwing a cha-cha her way. Now, the COVID year has given her a two-year cushion to hit the "reset" button someplace else...and she grabbed it. Best of luck to her. She'll do fine.

Thanks for the insight.

A bachelor's degree from Notre Dame and a master's from UVA is a nice way to enter the non-basketball world. Hope she has lots of success.

Is this where we talk about Aliyah Boston and Cameron Brink? :D

I'm talking about the real USC.

Honestly, I have no idea about what schools have good film programs, other than I see mentions of USC all the time. Probably makes sense, being close to Hollywood and all.
You already know. We were a University before y'all were even a state, dearest SoCal.

By the way, there's a Hollywood, SC that is 21 miles from Charleston, SC which automatically makes our Hollywood > your Hollywood.

Thanks O. What do you see as her best position? And would she and Mir complement each other?

Thank you! I can’t wait to see her in person, on a regular basis.

Hoping she lights up ND for 50 in next season's matchup.. Provided of course that UVA doesn't forfeit the game
Different coach and regime and honestly not so sure you, as a Duke WCBB should be throwing shade at any other schools yet given the less the stellar start to Kara’s career…my GIF and Emoji options are not working on my phone so pretend I put the purple snark emoji here.

No emoji needed from the Grand Poobah of Snark!

Heck...can't see Caroline Ducharme heading for the door (knock on wood). However, I can report her older sister, Ashley, entered the door at Brown.
Is that one of the Subjects you studied in Bristol HigH, or watching ND.? I knew about the sister at Brown. Caroline (DuCharme) is my current focus. Everything about this kid lights me up. I love, a Freshman, shoots, defends, carries herself like a Junior or senior. She is a KEEPER.

No inference or reference to Caroline, our Caroline, in the transfer line. I'd offer her my whole bank account to stay should that start to happen, all 7 dollar and 32 cents of it. Geez, reading this everyones gonna think I'm rich..

She hit the trifecta. She is home, she will be a starter and much needed leader on that team and it is a very good school academically.

@TCC Kid ."can't see Caroline Ducharme heading for the door" That's a pretty straightforward statement, is it not? I merely noted that her sister is in the portal out of Brown, Period. I'm glad you treasure Caroline. May her health hold up and play to the fullest of her abilities.

Wow, I guess I missed Geary's announcement on entering the portal. I think she would of helped our (alleged) need for another big. I liked her play with the Friars, even though she seemed foul prone against us. But I certainly can understand her desire to go to a different conference.
