I know many here don't want to hear this or even consider this but it's the conference, yes there are good teams in the conference but there are too many dregs and they are all a long long way from Hartford and NYC. How long before Ollie goes to Herbst and tells her this or maybe he already has?

The state spent 90 million on a football stadium to save UConn's basketball programs when the Div 1 apocalypse occurs. We are in far too deep to walk away from it now.
 
Montez needs to be 100% - we don't need another commit and leave before it starts.

If anything this might be Chill trying a hard close too quickly. People in sales know this, where you have them hooked and then they realize there is no time crunch and the deal won't go away so they take the power back.

I want guys who want to be here 100% - that has been our recipe for success in the past.

The AAC is coming along nicely. No thanks to our recent performances. The way for UConn to boost conference perception is to start winning. Conference performance/perception and UConn performance/perception are innately tied together.
The conference isn't why UConn has been down. It's been the struggles and the injuries.
Sure, Rutgers is boosted from their affiliation... but this isn't about the conference bringing UConn down. That's an absurd backdoor conclusion to make.
Recruiting will always be about relationships. UConn can still offer nationally competitive schedules and NCAA hopes.
 
If you think the American, a conference that didn't exist when these kids were growing up, isn't an issue, you do not know what you're talking about and should probably stop as soon as humanly possible.

Agreed. But if the BCS schools decide to split in order to shake off about 200 plus Div 1 hoops programs who have no business in Div 1, then maybe Lew Perkins was right.

The problem with the American is as much about geography as it is USF, Tulane, ECU, and Tulsa's programs and RPI dragging everything down. It can't be easy to sit in the house of a recruit and tell his parents I know these schools are in the middle of nowhere but we are on TV.

If UConn is winning big there is no issue. UConn has actually let down the conference recently, so blaming the conference is stupid.

p5 is football. Rutgers will never have the advantages of their more well-heeled conference mates. Coaches will always flock to the upper-tier of the 7 Major conferences.

Friar, those schools aren't in the middle of nowhere. Tampa, New Orleans, and even Tulsa, are every bit as desirable as every other destination in college sports. Tulsa has made a tourney recently and - coupled with the Wichita State addition - gives the conference a nice bridge in the West. The AAC footprint is actually filled with decent destinations that, outside of Greenville, are very easy to fly into.

Those destinations can just as easily be seen as a recruiting advantage.

You don't give any credit to Pikiell and Hobbs? You know their schtick right now is to cloak themselves in UConn's success. I suspect that's hook right now.

The hook right now is the Big Ten and the fact that Pikiell, unlike everyone else who has ever been employed by Rutgers, is not a raging incompetent. Don't confuse the idiocy of the Rutgers' social media team with Pikiell.

The fact that you think a bridge to the west is a nice thing for UConn basketball speaks volumes that you are missing my point. Parents of kids in NJ have to spend some serious coin to get to most away games. Nothing about travel in The American is easy for anyone. Only one school is located in the same geographic area of the country as UConn. There is no way that can be spun as a recruiting advantage.

I'd go with the VT, ACC and Buzz if that's what it comes down to. Both are more accomplished than Rutgers, Big 10, and Pikiell.

Both of those aren't as accomplished as what's here in Storrs.

Kids go away for 4 years to schools half way across the country.

You're saying kids don't want to visit the cities they associate with their favorite franchises in sports? Who wants to go to Wisconsin, Omaha, and all that noise?

Agreed. The conference (and family, I'm sure) played a key role in getting Wilson to St. Johns, as well. MAL to Providence? The Friars placement in The Big East didn't hurt.

Everyone's gotta eat. I'm not missing Wilson, who had an ACC offer as well if I'm not mistaken.

I'm more concerned with the kids who want to be here.

Yes, some kids do. UConn is recruiting more than some kids.
