Hawkins 2-12 Newton 2-10.
And one of those was a way off target bank. At that point you think that he might use that fortune to roll to a huge night. Or it was a sign of things to come. Off night, bad timing for it.

The bottom line is you can't miss wide-open shots and should have penetrated which UConn can't seem to do.

That is a tough loss now onto the NCAA's hopefully as a three seed

You can’t take the timeout home. What on earth is Hurley thinking? Just terrible execution. Hawk and AJax didn’t step up when we needed them. They were both very, very poor. We just don’t have a killer instinct.
Hawk: a no-show. Marquette totally took him out of the game.

Hurley: I can understand Hurley wanting to see if UConn had a spacing advantage when Newton pushed the ball upcourt, but it was obvious that they did not, so calling a TO was necessary to set up a good final shot.

A timeout gives the defense a chance to set up too. Going off the rebound lets you get a look in transition, semi-transition, a broken play, whatever. I don't mind that.

What I do mind is Jackson and Hawkins showing up small again. These guys are running out of time to show that they're winners.
If we were trading buckets back and forth and in rhythm down the stretch I'd agree. But we were lost the previous 4 possessions.

Call a timeout. Do your job and call a play. Give the guys some direction and put the loss on your play call or execution of the play

It also gives you the chance to draw up a play. And Marquette’s defense was already set up, so that doesn’t matter here.

Me thinks he was told Jordan was to take the last shot and was afraid to take it. Only down two and Hurley draws up a three? Why didn’t Newton take the shot when he has space with more than three seconds on the clock?

Nothing was drawn up. They rebounded the foul shot and kept the ball in play.

The previous possession was drawn up and Joey got a wide open three.

I’m still feeling confident going into the dance.
We’ve been playing great lately and we got beat by a top 5 team. Shots didn’t fall, top scorer was defended real well and had an off night. Defense could have been better tonight.
They will rebound and be ready for whoever we go against.
Hopefully stay in the East and come back to the Garden in a couple of weeks.
