Marquette (18) @ Mississippi St (6) - 12/06/18

Whew! Marquette did all they could to win that game, just came up a little short. If Marquette had any post play they would be really great, shot the lights out tonight and made MSST look like our shoes were stuck in molasses.

I dunno.... you thought MSU played poorly? This Marquette team probably could have beaten a lot good teams tonight.
They almost got beat on their home court by a team with no player above 6 feet tall, and were completely bailed out by their height and rebounding advantage. Howard and McCowan combined for 53 and 30.

Not saying that MSU played poorly, just saying they're not the bees' knees like some of the homers around here seem to think.

What a blast!

Two takeaways for me: 1) Marquette - DePaul should play each other twice. I'm hoping to gods that I can see those games! 2) I think Marquette gave some teams a blueprint for how to contain McCowan. I don't think the sag-and-double strategy would work for everyone, but they did it very effectively.

Great game. Did not expect anything quite like this. We haven't been challenged in a long time (since Louisville and Notre Dame last year), so I wasn't exactly conditioned to expect a nailbiter. Last time we allowed 82+ points was March 26, 2017 against Baylor in an overtime game.... 20 months ago.

I'm sure Vic isn't happy about that, but I'm very happy about many things. Bibby, Danberry, and Scott coming in in the clutch for one. Great play by Bibby in the last shot to avoid leaning in. Marquette was trying to draw contact on a 3-point shot, and Bibby stayed with it and got a piece of the last shot. Marquette is a very good top 15 team that people aren't talking about enough, and I love the way they played, or came to play.

Still, this tape is suddenly the most valuable thing now for Vic, and he needs to review it again and call extra team meetings on this.

...

17-20 from the FT line was huge. Very easily could have lost this game. Great test.

.-.
Game plan is solid...make Mississippi State run. They aren't nearly as imposing if McCowan isn't back defensively. King looks fantastic for Marquette.

This is definitely one way to game play against State. UCLA did this last year in the Elite 8 and caused some problems.

Jazz Holmes had 13 assists and 1 turnover. Pretty impressive against a team of Marquette’s caliber.

Howard and McCowan combined for 53 and 30.

Danielle King was on fire tonight. She's 5th on the team in ppg but went off for 27 tonight. All the other Marquette starters played big as well, except Davenport: 0 points, 2 rebounds, 4 turnovers. There's your ball game right there.

Not picking, but she did have 24 and 18 and shot 75% and the strategy left Howard free to have a massive game.

Marquette played very well and impressed the hell out of me.

I'm not delusional. We're not UConn or even ND, but we are certainly in the next tier.

Yeah, I think she's answering the question many asked about why she got so many minutes in key games while William sat.

Only thing she badly needs to add is a 3-ball. Teams sag heavily off of her and it can make entry passes difficult. Wouldn’t mind seeing Holmes try one per game if they’re going to do that. She is 2/3 on the season either. Myah Taylor not the best shooter either, but better. Guess we will hear about Chastity Patterson soon.

I agree, she was absolutely effective. But how many of her baskets were assisted, maybe three? Most of her points were either putbacks or free throws. I would have expected that against such a hieght-challenged team, MSST would get the ball to her half their half-court possessions. They tried, but were seldom successful.

As I said, the Marquette strategy wouldn’t work for all, or even many teams. It was really well-executed.

And I for one am not counting MSST out. Vic has a certain magic that he may be able to work on this team.

Sounds like a good game. I'm still trying to get my granddaughter to go to a WBB game at The Al.

They have 5 active players on their roster with 1000+ career points. I doubt we'll face anyone much tougher this year. Sure, we have UConn and Notre Dame staring at our faces in April. But if UConn and Notre Dame were to face Marquette, while they're probably better built and will probably start to pull away at the end, Marquette could probably stay with them for a while. Maybe UConn less than Notre Dame. They took them Notre Dame to overtime last year after all.

Looks like ND plays them again this year. I'm definitely gonna watch that game.

I sure like a coach that recognizes that he/she owns responsibility for not preparing his/her team properly. Very impressed with Vic. The coaching staff at Marquette should also be commended for the great game plan last night. Marquette (like ASU) are going to wreck some playoff dreams come the NCAA Tournament.

Marquette is a little up and down at times because they depend on hitting a lot of mid-range jumpers to be really on. In their first loss at Miami, they only shot 28.6% from the field and 50% from the line. Last night, they were knocking down a lot of shots. and ended up at 54.1% from the field and 72.7% from the line.

MSU fans shouldn't panic too much. This Marquette team took ND to OT last year, and they returned all 5 starters. When they are hitting their shots, they are a really tough opponent.

Exactly this. Marquette is a hot-and-cold team. When they're hot they can really dazzle (like last night). When cold, they can lose to a team like Georgetown by 25 points (that happened last year).

I couldn't see the game, but I would assume teams game strategy would similar when playing Miss State or Baylor. Were they successful playing the sagging defense?

.-.
Wish State used high post passing more. If Howard gets the ball at the elbow or key, McCowan should immediately post up and get the ball. If they leave Howard open, take the three.

Yep, they were sagging and then playing Bibby really tight on the outside. Basically if you have a dominant big girl they are going to have 2 and 3 surrounding them. Then they tight cover your best 3 point shooter. Looked kind of like a 4 man zone with 1 man to man on Bibby.

Sort of. MSU scored 87, but they missed a lot of open shots that they have been knocking down so far this season.

I think a lot of Marquette's success was trying to get points before Teaira could get set up. They ran on makes and misses alike. Vic will have a lot to work on today. MSU played Marquette's game. He doesn't want to play that style of ball.

That is what I was assuming and is kind of what ASU and South Dakota did and both found success. However, once you see it a few times I feel like the execution on how to work around it will get better for Miss State and BU.

You think they were missing them due to higher quality of opponent which would translate to better defense. MSU has played one notable opponent so this would be another challenge when the guards faces teams with better defense which would more than likely give more contested shots.

Great game by Marquette. For us, it was a game we needed. We were outplayed at times and their speed gave us trouble, our defense was spotty at times especially on transition possessions. State is still a work in progress this year. A lot of talent but team has a way to go to be at the top of the totem pole.
