To be fair, it is a little different to be fourth in Florida than first in Wyoming, for example. Fourth in Florida is not terrible. That said, they are so distant (which you pointed out) that they have a lot of work to do to be relevant. But I do see the fascination. The Big East fell victim to it, too.
That was several years ago, and the motivation behind adding USF was to replace Miami so that they didn't completely lose the Florida market. Plus, Florida happens to be on the east coast, so those schools were well within the Big East's footprint.

The SEC has a stranglehold on the state of Florida, and the ACC owns the remaining scraps. Adding UCF, or even a package of UCF and USF, would be a complete waste of resources for the Big 12.

Houston has had good teams under 3 of the last 4 coaches. They fired a guy after one year for winning only 8 games. I think they're overkill for an already Texas heavy league, but they are neither a one hit wonder like UCF or program that was terrible and got hot under one coach like Memphis and then left.
But they are at best, 3rd in their market.

But they're argument is they can help win that market back from the SEC. I think the Big 12 just needs Texas to be good again, but Houston at least could point to big ratings in their huge market.

i guess? but...

HOW ARE WE ONLY AT THIS POINT?

They're all looking for cover because they've made this a public spectacle and there's going to be blowback for some no matter who gets in. Now it's about the goalposts. Why are they considering expansion? What are the goals and priorities? Have they even sorted that out yet or will the goalposts end up somewhere in the Aero Lot?

If you all don't believe that Houston is a legitimate frontrunner, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Yep, and they will be making the decision in large part based on the fact the Houston is currently ranked 6th in the country. Sad but true.

Bingo. Doesn't make the most sense, but it's a huge factor. All of you here who were rooting for Houston on Saturday I still cannot fathom your logic.

So what happens when the non-Texas schools vote NO to UH? Clearly OU isn't interested. Will the non-Texas schools demand 14 in exchange for UH or will they be happy trading UH for Cincy?

If I was one of the smaller schools that didn't have a guaranteed landing spot in the event that UT/OU and perhaps a couple others bolt in 2024, then I'd be interested in getting to 14 and hoping that the leftover conference was still the 5th best conference in the country.

I'm not convinced even UT truly wants UH. It's just a dog and pony show. With 4 teams they probably should get in. With 2? Absolutely not.

Why the hell is she tweeting that? She and Cincy's Davenport show no class and verge on violating the NDA. Plus her photo of herself lacks decorum.

She seems pretty confident. Meanwhile our President tries to manage expectations and defers to the NDA anytime she's asked about it. Not a good sign.

Hopefully it's cockiness and not confidence.

She is confident because if they don't get picked they can blame so many factors/players that are not her/university.

Houston spent $44.8 million, Cincinnati spent $52.5 million, and UConn spent $72.1 million on athletics in 2014-2015. The lowest spenders in the Big 12 were Iowa St and Kansas St at $75.3 million. How are Houston and Cincinnati even in the conversation for the Big 12? Is Houston going to increase spending by almost 100% to catch up to the bottom of the Big 12?

Not sure it is a sign either way.One thing is for sure, if following conference rules means anything to the universities in the Big12, it might give them pause to add a school who repeatedly runs afoul of the NDA that they put in place.

Thank you. The Big 12 hired consultants to tell them all the finances. Yes, a good football season is nice and the timing is great for UH but are they gonna completely ignore the dollar signs? Maybe.

Houston is building a billion square foot facility for FedEx in return for $50 million to add to athletic spending.

Both Houston and UConn are competing using prodigious athletic department subsidizing...$28 milllion for UConn and $25 million for Houston.

The question is, if the the programs come in on a partial payout basis as is likely, can they compete with Big 12 programs without continuing the subsidy.

Without subsidy, and with partial payouts, your prediction of being in the bottom of the league in revenue would be true for almost any of the G5.

You're comparing apples and oranges. There are all sorts of subsidies you're not seeing. One that is not reported by P5 schools is debt service by the academic side on facilities. That never makes it into the report. UConn has nosuch subsidies because the football stadium was paid for by the state, and the new basketball facilities were paid for with private contributions as were the football facilities. Meanwhile, schools everywhere, including Texas and Michigan, have over $300m in debt being serviced by the academic side. In effect, a subsidy.

Houston revenue is in the low 40s. With that subsidy. UConn revenue is low 70s. Exceeds Iowa State now while only getting AAC money. Even say, $15m a year extra puts UConn around top 30 of all schools in revenue. Do the math. A full share and we'd be top 25. UConn already is P5. The next closest G5 to UConn in revenue is $20m behind.
