There's a solid argument that another year of high-visibility development in the NCAA for Whaley could bump him into the draft. Much, much tougher to make that leap playing overseas.

I don't think that's realistic for Carlton, who can make a good career overseas for himself.

Sorry, I just wasn't sure. There was even a thread recently joking about how these questions can still be coming up. Anyway, others have covered it in this thread. This year doesn't count against eligibility and going forward there will be a one-time, no-wait transfer rule.

How would he reclassify? He still has to graduate high school and he's a junior now. Take enough classes this summer? Like a whole year's worth of classes? Does his school even offer summer classes? It isn't that easy to reclassify. Most kids who do it have repeated a grade in high school already so they can easily get enough credits to graduate.

We will have Akok back next year. Along with Sampson and likely another big. I could see Whaley coming back too. And Springs. We will have plenty of big men.
 
He was nowhere near ready to break into this rotation, but you can't teach size and span and he has plenty of that. Hope he finds a nice landing spot, but I don't consider this a loss really.

Like other have said, this opens up another scholarship, more recruiting possibilities down the road.

Perhaps 3 years from now there will be a thread about guys who transferred and we'll be pining after his numbers for Gonzaga.

Everyone downplayed Durham, and I'm on an island of course, but I am really impressed with his growth and progress at Notre Dame.

NDakotaHusky normally only reads Chief's Briefs... so that's probably why NDakotaHusky didn't know.

Exactly what will happen wherever he transfers to and he doesn't even have any relationships with whoever his new teammates will be. So it will be even worse.

Not surprised.. Guessing he saw way too much competition for PT .. Could have viewed certain recruitments/commitments as staff continuing to "recruit over him".. Believe there's more to the story..

BTW.. IIRC..Sool has an AAU teammate that would be a nice pickup for JB's spot.. Maybe staff thinks they're good for 4/5.until Clingan decision..

I feel pretty neutral, not surprising since over 1000 players transferred the previous year.

Wish him the best of luck wherever he ends up.

Don't blame them. I'd want to move on with life. Make some $. To stay may make one feel as if they are stagnating in life.

I suppose I might stay if I needed to finish my degree.
 
My question is will JB be eligible to play for another NCAA D1 team next year? One thing I do believe is that Hurley is never going to guarantee a kid minutes. Before he injured his wrist some were suggesting Dan Hurley give AJ more minutes so he doesn't consider transferring. When he was hired by UConn many on the board were hoping he would show the door to some players on the team he inherited. He didn't. He knows what he wants in his program and his players know, too. Recruits will know it too and that's a good thing. I wish Javonte the best but he reminds me of another Canadian, John Candy, who said in Stripes "you got what, a 6 to 8 week training program here?

This type of thing usually means goods things are coming from Hurley's staff. Im excited about the possibilities.

I went to this doctor. Well, he told me I swallow a lot of aggression... along with a lot of pizzas! Ha Ha Ha! Pizzas! I'm basically a shy person, I'm a shy guy. Uh, he suggested taking one these uh, aggression training courses. You know these aggression training courses like EST, those type of things. Anyway, it cost 400 bucks! 400 bucks to join this thing? Well I didn't have the money and I thought to myself, "Join the army"! It's free. So I figured while I'm here I'll lose a few pounds. And you got what, a 6 to 8 week training program here? A real tough one. Which is perfect for me.
I'm going to walk out of here a Lean, Mean, Fightin' Machine!

True, but it is also not a given that they stay. I could see them getting their degrees and deciding to make money. Pro athletes have a limited number of earning years. It may not make sense to give up one them in hope that their status will be enhanced.

Maybe Issiah and Josh will feel Covid robbed them the end of last year and this year of having a normal season and they will want to have one last legit go at it with fans in the building? Who knows... its up to them.
 
From a basketball standpoint I find it hard to believe his expectations were to play more than he has this year, behind so many older experienced players. I would have thought the challenge to improve in practice against our current guys would have been his mindset from the beginning. I also would have thought that he expected to compete every subsequent year with other top talent and would not view other good players as a logjam to avoid. That brings me to the thought that maybe he has self assessed that this is the wrong level for him for at least a couple years. He certainly never impressed with our HS limited tape, however, he was interesting in his few minutes, definitely big, had a couple of good skills, and was a great diamond in the rough that might be a home run.

From a non-basketball standpoint, the college experience probably hasn't been normal enough to be enjoyable. He could be homesick, and maybe just needs a fresh start mentally from the quarantining et al.

I would have liked him to stay. From a team standpoint, Sanogo, Johnson, Akok, and Springs are a solid group up front. There is bound to be a spring transfer to plug in.

With Whaley in particular, it would make sense to get some input from Pro Scouts as to what they think his upside can be as far as his deciding to stay another year. Certainly, Hurley should know some and Calhoun certainly knew some he could consult with.
