Jana injured

Curious whether UConn’s orthopedic surgeons will do the surgery or whether they’ll go to NY to HSS and O’Malley who did Stewie’s and I think Durant’s. The UConn surgeons are excellent btw.

From your link: "Achilles tendon injuries commonly occur after an abrupt increase in training intensity. Increase the distance, duration and frequency of your training by no more than 10 percent weekly."

That and the fact that she is a teenager that just suffered an injury most common in 30-40 year olds I think shows how very avoidable this injury was and more support for why I hate fiba tournamnets.
El Alfy had been training and playing with UConn for almost 2 months prior to this tournament. There was no abrupt increase.

She hadn't played in a game in months, possible close to a year. And then she played in, what, 9 in 11 days? Thats a huge increase in intensity.

I know this could have happened anywhere or later, but I just wished for the summer everyone stayed on campus and just went home on their break and played on the tour coming up. Nothing extra with the way the last few years have gone. I know she is heart broken about the upcoming trip.

Jana having come early to UCONN but never playing in a regular game had 4 full years of eligibility at UCONN!
This injury occurring during a FIBA summer Tournament has no bearing on her NCAA eligibility so when she applies for her hardship year, she'll still retain 4 full years of eligibility!
Her slate is clean according to the NCAA! She has not used ANY of her eligibility
She will have surgery in CT by the UCONN Doctors!
Achilles Tears take over a year to heal and Stewie worked especially hard and made it back to play for Seattle in a year! That was the exception they're usually out more time!!
Watching the video she wasn't touched, she was turning and went down!

Well with Jana gone this season probably, Ice, Ayanna, and Amari have to step up. I say ice starts with Aaliyah and Ayanna and Amari off the bench. Wonder if Geno will get a big overseas like he did last year when Paige got hurt

This is terrible news. I feel for Jana. Nobody wants to see these injuries.

Medically she will be in very good hands back here in CT. All we can do is await official word. I do not expect her to play this season.

As to the rest of the"stuff" posted here, unbelievable. Just unbelievable!!!!

The other 191 players in the tournament didn't have a problem with it. She was prepared at least as well by her spring at UConn as any of those other kids.

Shaking my head. Why are we letting freshman play in competitive, 5 on 5 games before they even start serious practices and conditioning in the Fall?? Same thing happened to Brady last year.

And for those who say the injury would have happened anyway, that's simply not true. The teams medical staff has to know each players background and how much to push their workouts and ease them into full on court activities. This info gets passed onto the coach who helps them manage the players. This is more critical for freshman imo. Putting these players in international events is a huge risk, and we're learning the hard way 2 years in a row...
“We” are not in control of whether these players play in International Tournaments for their country! Being asked/chosen to play on one’s National team is generally considered a great honor especially for those countries with a less, shall we say, jaded view of patriotism and national pride than we currently see in the west. It is, for the most part, (even here in the west )still considered an honor, or at the very least, an opportunity.

I agree that these kids are playing too much at too young an age but unfortunately it is basically an insoluble problem. Players need to play in order to improve, they need to test themselves against other players, and (not least) to gain the attention of coaches who control access to scholarships and (and thereby, NIL money). Finally, with very few exceptions, medical/training staff cannot predict (in any way) future injuries! Sure, if there is a known prior injury, or some congenital condition that they discover in training but other than that, there is simply no way to know!

Sad as it is, I don’t believe there is a solution. I’m praying for the best outcome for Jana but it’s certainly looking like we will not be seeing her on court for awhile. Just devastating news for a player who has already become one of my personal favorites!

You don't seem to get it so I'll drop it.

Was Jana not on scholarship last season?
I believe the rule is that you have five years to play four seasons. So, Jana used up some of her time, but none of her eligibility.

Does that make sense?

The way these young ladies play and workout all year long and specialize in one sport by age 18 they have bodies of 40 year olds.

This. She was obviously enjoying the time with the rest of the freshman class and was looking forward to playing. On top of that she was having a great FIBA tournament. It has to be absolutely heartbreaking for her not to be able to play in the near term. I feel for her too.

Totally heartbreaking for Jana!!! Virtual hugs to her and her family! And prayers for a successful surgery and rehab! Let’s not forget she is part of the UCONN family and her health and well-being is more important than any W.

Keep your head up Jana! We’ll see you back on the court before you know it!

Alyssa Thomas tore her Achilles in overseas play in January and was playing just 9 months later at the end of the Sun's regular season. No expectation for Jana to hit that timeline, however.

AT is a grown woman who is extremely strong and tough as well as tough-minded, not a kid just out of high school. Upon her return AT decribed her experience - "A lot of hard work, a lot of bad days, a lot of good days, but I had great support. It was definitely one of the toughest things I've ever been through."

Good luck Jana.

With the "Speculation" that Jana is most likely going to be out the entire season, does Geno and his staff to an "Immediate" search, like they did last season, to bring in either a "One and Done" Grad Transfer Center/Forward or a Rookie Center/Forward (like they signed Lou Lopez Senechal) and/or when they signed Ines Bettencourt, both after Paige Bueckers went down over the Summer of 2022. - Are there still any "DECENT" Grad Transfer Center/Forwards in the Transfer Portal worth talking about?

For God’s sake, what does it matter?
I, personally, think its important to recognize how irresponsible some of these Fiba tournaments are so maybe, someday, they will change. This isn't the first player to suffer an overuse injury due to this same tournament.

This is a bit of a diversion, but was Egypt really beating Italy 19-0 in the 2Q? What happened to Italian WBB. Remember reading an article in Sporting News (or somewhere) just 5 -6 years ago about Italy going through a "Golden Generation" of WBB players. Wonder what the term is for pyrite in Italian. Pyritelli?

Sorry, now back to Jana's injury.
The scoreboard whacked out at 12 to 10. Then Italy’s score dropped the 0.

Husky Nan, According to the Egyptian Basketball Federation, Jana El Alfy tore her Achilles tendon. She will fly from Spain to the United States for the surgery.

The 23-24 season ends in 8 1/2 months. Short of some kind of medical and recovery miracle, I don't see any chance she plays this season.

It makes sense from the video and where she grabbed and the fact that no one touched her and she just went down. It’s the first thing that came to my mind when I saw it. She is probably done for the season if true and I know this has been brought up before and I kinda was thinking the same thing, but now I’m more on the bandwagon of, we need to look into what kinds of exercises or training is our training staff having these players do or not do, because it’s becoming a little too often to just be a coincidence. It’s at least for me, getting to the point where this needs to be looked into.
As an outsider, I agree. So many injuries for your players. Silcone injections are known to weaken ligaments/tendons and lead to tears later on. Could it be that in her case?

I doubt she will play this season. We're basically at the same time of year where Ice and Paige got hurt. I guess this means we'll only see Jana play a max of three years unless she applies for a sixth year since this is technically her second season at UConn?
@hoopsfan22, although Jana arrived on campus in the Spring semester this past year, I do believe she will have four years of eligibility left, should she not play in 2023-2024. From the games I saw, I don’t remember her playing in any of them, apart from cheering on her teammates from the bench. And yes, she was an active participant in that area.

Also, although injuries are hard to avoid, it appears that the Huskies’ bad luck of acquiring these continues. However, the good news is that Jana will fly back to the States to be fully taken care of. It’s such a bummer for everyone (her, her parents, coaches and teammates, fans), but she’ll get excellent care. I’m wishing her a successful surgery, and a full recovery. Hang in there Boneyarders, we will get through this together!

Jana is one of many UConn freshmen who got hurt as freshmen or first year players. Few overcame it to play to their potential and some transferred. They missed many practices and fell behind the other players and never caught up. (Courtney, can't remember her last name) was one. However, Jana has spent plenty of time at UConn practices so she should not be hindered as much.

Some of you folks are just clueless. These injuries aren't the fault of the coaching staff, or the training staff. Stuff happens in life.

Bad luck, it happens. Hope she can come back strong. Akok took a while, possibly longer than 1 months, to come back.

I remember Geno a while back said in an interview that players are coming into college already "damaged' because of the sheer amount of time spent playing in high school, AAU tournaments, etc plus they concentrate on only one sport.
