Illinois Post Game Thread

At the very least it should have been 3 free throws.

I don't know the rules on continuation, it's new.

But Malachi does get the shot off at 2:10, so the shot clock should've expired at 2:11.

The ref blows his whistle BEFORE 2:11.

3 free throws would've been the correct decision.
Now I’m not following. If it’s a shooting foul at all then it’s gotta be count the basket and he shoots 1.

Edit: I think I understand… the actual time of foul from your perspective (i.e., when the whistle blew) was BEFORE the 2:10 game clock stop time. Thus, it was within the 20 seconds that started at 2:32… can’t (maybe, maybe not) have phantom time to continue the shooting motion, and if not, you can’t count the basket. But he was still shooting a three, so, three shots. Interesting perspective. I appreciate it for sure.

That offense worked so well that year because the trigger man was the same guy from the year before and you had key guys who had run it the year before. They knew the offense so well. It’s all new for everyone but Alex.
You do realize Ross Solo and Stew have been here for 3 years. Tarris was here last year. in 23/24 Cam and Steph were in year 1

‘24 team had 8 years experience at UConn. This year starters have 13

The third foul on Ross was ridiculous. You could literally see the offensive player (forget who it was) throw his off arm into his chest and elbow him off. I couldn't believe they called that on Jayden
That's the problem with being foul prone. You deserve three, one is questionable, and one is an awful call.

Ross annd AK were awesome today. Reibe was excellent. Malachi was INCREDIBLE.

Solo was really good despite shooting poorly. It’s not great that his shooting is this off, but I’m still not freaked out. He’s playing great in general and rebounding.

He still gets blown by on D way too easily.
When Solo is shooting well, it is possible to overlook some of his defensive flaws. Have to say that I wasn’t really impressed by Demary’s on the ball d either. Smith was the best guard on the court for us. I thought that both Stewart and Ross made some good contributions as well.

Solo is so good from midrange and at the basket right now that if he could just shoot 38% from 3 he would sleepwalk to 18-20 points a game. if he wasn't still lighting it up in practice I doubt Hurley would give him free reign to hoist them up, hoping it eventually bounces back in his favor but he hasn't shot it well from 3 in any game yet dating all the way back to the exhibitions.

But that never happens when we see a team with the ball in their offensive set with the clock not operating properly. They blow the whistle, determine how much time should have been on the clock, then they give the ball to the offensive team with a side out but with the time elapsed. I don't think they can rewind things to restart play before the whistle unless the original shot clock had expired.

The only exception is if you're in overtime at Marquette in 2013. Then they can basically do whatever they want and rewind time.

They can review a play to see if a whistle was blown late. All I'm saying is that it seems totally appropriate for a player to follow the official shot clock and that, in cases where the malfunction prejudiced the team with the ball, the officials should go back in time to whenever it "malfunctioned" -- whether because it erroneously stopped or reset. I would have been really ticked off if we lost possession because of the shot clock operator.

Anyway, we won, the shot was awesome, and the result was awesome. The 11-0 Illinois run wasn't, but a 13-point lead over a good team is a great win any way you slice it.

I couldn’t agree more with all of this.

Let’s be 100% clear. The shot clock call was 100% correct. Karaban rebounded the ball as the clock went from 2:30 to 2:29. On the whistle, there was 2:10 left. He got it off in time.
Just to be 100% clear since I replied to a reply before seeing this: Reibe* rebounded the ball with 2:32 on the clock. See attachment. On the whistle, there was in fact 2:10 left. 22 seconds of game time elapsed. Apologies if this is beating a dead horse.

Those guys have more years but the problem is the key guys don't. The guys playing to point the trigger postion have been here months. Tristan in his first year running the offense struggled people were ready to run him off campus until the tournament. His second year in he had mastered it. The same thing with Hassan as his backup they both had so much experience running the offense.

The third foul on Ross was ridiculous. You could literally see the offensive player (forget who it was) throw his off arm into his chest and elbow him off. I couldn't believe they called that on Jayden

Was that the one with the continuation (which, while now "correct", was also a bit ridiculous)?

I just watched the replay like 10 times (btw the full game replay is up on the Fox sports app if you want to watch yourself)

Looks like Reibe grabs the first offensive rebound at 2:32 ticking into 2:31. The foul happens at 2:11 ticking into 2:10. It’s a difference of milliseconds. Put a gun to my head and make me pick, I’d call it a shot clock violation. But it’s SO close and I don’t think you can overturn a call that’s so close. Not 100% clear and conclusive

And if we’re playing this game, #3 on Illinois definitely hooks Karaban’s arm on his drive before the shot anyway. So call that correctly and none of if this matters lol

Still need to do a better job of not letting teams to come back when we have a comfortable lead. Need that killer instinct to put the game away.

I just went back and rewatched that possession from the beginning. The ultimate explanation from the announcers was not true. In the original shot clock, Smith missed a layup off the rim and they reset the clock properly. Then Karaban’s shot didn’t hit the rim, but they improperly reset the clock.

In my opinion, they handled it incorrectly: it should have been UConn possession on the baseline with about 3 second on the shot clock. The basket should not have counted because it was released after the shot clock would have expired. However, it should not have been a turnover to Illinois because the reality on the floor was a reset shot clock, and the players responded to the live ruling. So, in my opinion, they made the wrong determination to count the basket and also offered a factually untrue explanation for that decision.
The 20 second shot clock started at 2:30, the shot by Malachi came at 2:11. The referee called it right. I replayed it several times.

I need to see a replay again because I feel like I saw something different than everybody else. On the replay they showed of the "shot that didn't hit the rim", I swear I saw on the rebounding that someone (couldn't see who or what team) tipped the ball back towards the basket and the ball just barely nicked the rim. If that really happened, the clock would have reset then and the ensuing shot would count. I am doubting what I thought I saw because no one else seemed to see it. But it WOULD explain the call that everyone is arguing about.

The clock DID reset on the first shot. I had to go back because that whole situation stunk to me and the explanation does not hold up to inspection.
If you watched the replay, you would see the shot clock reset at 2:30 and Malachi's shot came at 2:11. Therefore, the call was correct.
