GM sportsfans - now that the WNBA draft is done, I'm thinking we'll see a bit more portal announcements. As of last night, here are some stats on the poll form from the 1st post of this thread:

LB & Hailey Van Lith land at same school? - 3 (LSU, ND, UConn)

For the 30 No votes of them going to same school (single votes or multiple schools listed not shown):
Betts:
UCLA - 11
Notre Dame - 8
UConn - 4
Iowa - 3

Hailey Van Lith:
LSU - 12
Indiana - 6

Looks like UCLA has the best chance of getting at least ONE !

I am pretty close to your views. Your point on playing time for the other bigs is important too. If Betts came and locked up a starting position for the next three years, players like Ice and Jana would be affected, but as you indicated they can play the 4 as well. After next year one of those two could start with Betts and either could get backup 5 minutes behind Betts.

Put another way, after Aaliyah departs (assuming she doesn't take the Covid year), if Betts was here a minimum of two more bigs would get significant time in the rotation if Geno had a limited three big rotation, or hopefully three more if he had a designated backup at both big positions. Right now those candidates would be Ice, Jana, Ayanna and Amari. On paper Ayanna might need four bigs in the rotation to get playing time, and it is hard to see how Amari factors at all.

That seems to be a pretty crowded situation and of course that assumes no big additions in the 2024 class. Any addition there would be added to the 4 players competing for 2-3 rotation spots after this year, so it could hurt the chances of Koval, Tac or others. Having said that we don't know how many years Paige will play. Her best chance and the team's best chance at a championship might be this year, with a roster loaded at 1-4, and expecting to be good at the 5, but with the chance with Betts to be great there as well, and have a championship level C for two years after that.

At this point I suspect we are among the teams she would consider, but that we are underdogs to get her. If not, back to Koval, Tac, perhaps Okot, and hope that Ice and Jana will be good enough in their first year to get us to the promised land. I think they will be good from the start, but not nearly as good as they will be by their junior and senior years. Still waiting and hoping.

Its doesn't mean anything related to "Who is Following Who" on Social Media, related to landing spots for these Big Time Players. It all comes down to A) Fit for the Player and B) Fit for the New Team.

Given this, I am still sticking to my guns and saying:

1. Hailey Van Lith will be going to LSU
2. Lauren Betts will be going to Notre Dame
3. Annesah Morrow will be going to Indiana

I think he probably didn't reach out to Cardoso - he had just signed Dorka and had a really solid roster with one vet post and one freshman post coming in.

I don't know about Betts - I hope he has, but I don't know anything about Ice and Jana and he obviously knows a lot. If he is confident about those two, I think he may not want to go to a 15 player roster. That is a lot of players to coach and keep happy. And it creates a crowd at every position on the court, that could well end up stifling development and future recruiting.

It is always nice as a fan to want to grab all the talent, but we don't have to live in the locker room once it is all assembled.

Well we know he reaches out to certain transfers, as he did with Dorka & Lou. We also know that UConn recruited Betts out of HS, so there is a previous relationship.

I have said before that Betts makes UConn a championship contender/favorite for the next 3 seasons. Geno & his staff have probably discussed Betts along with several other players currently in the portal.

A decision has likely been made as to whether or not to pursue Betts. If so, Morgan probably contacted her first to gauge her interest. If Betts is interested in UConn, Geno calls next, asking the question he asks of all potential transfers, “What’s wrong with you?” :cool:

Maryland absolutely frustrated Caitlin in that game that she was even lucky to score 18 points. She was so frustrated that Lisa pulled her from the game at the end. Why not? The points/min performance is usually the true measure. One is never sure with these multiple games encounter whether it's the opposing team responsible by adjusting its defense and effort level or whether the young lady is diminished physically by a condition, whatever it is - mental or otherwise. So, choosing one game among the three encounters between them is just as unfair as choosing to average on minutes played which, all other things equal, is the true measure.

Just watch the first half against UConn as it unfolded into the 3rd......she recovered sometime in the 2nd half against an undermanned UConn team basically playing 6 (Ayanna was on court only 6 min; lucky for them Caroline found form for the first time since returning from injury). Her moments like those you point out....that frustration came knowing that she scored 42 against them in a earlier game and seeing defensive adjustments against which she did better overall in the following game.

That said, I would wager that if Iowa played UConn 3 times (or more) at same strength (without Dorka, you remembered that, didn't you?) as that game, she would never get near 42 in any game. With Dorka before they got worn down as the season progressed? I leave that to your imagination.....

What has you thinking Morrow would go to Indiana? I'm not sure if she'd fit their style of play from what I've seen over the years.

In today’s world of big time college sports I would add a C to your post which would be from the athlete’s point of view- ” how does it meet my expectations for NIL endorsements? JMO

Aside from that, McKenzie Holmes is returning next year. IN would have 2 excellent low post scorers, when they would only need one at a time.

Does Morrow really play in the post though? She seems to be everywhere on the court. I could envision a high-low scenario, but Morrow is used to taking a lot of shots. That habit would need to be broken when you have Parrish, Scalia, Garzon, etc. on the floor.

When it comes to NIL, I think it's important to point out that a small percentage of D1 NCAAW players will make the dollars someone like Morrow could possibly make.

Per Raoul's website, majority of the players transferring out are leaving non-P5 programs (345 out of 494). While looking to make NIL deals is good to consider, we shouldn't assume that this is the driving factor for majority of these players.

Perhaps.... Indiania would like a double-double machine.... and Aneesha would prefer
to be (relatively) close to her hometown of Chicago. I thought that was one of her
reasons for committing to De Paul.

Injuries can happen!!! and having two different styles of individual playing may be
a good offensive variation. Also Mckenzie can teach Aneesha some old time
Maine cooking and vice versa about Chicago cuisine. Small town, big city girl.

I get the proximity factor. Indiana already has a double double machine in Holmes. Garzon and Parrish can score and do hunt down rebounds, Indiana has several double double options as it is. Their freshman forward has good potential as well.

Based on her play, I can't envision her in their offence unless she changes her style. She doesn't exactly replace what Indiana loses in Berger being drafted. If she lands there and it works, awesome. She's a great player. Seeing her on a roster where it best suits her strengths is all I want to see.

The driving factor is usually playing time, which in many cases can be exacerbated by homesickness, chemistry problems with teammates, and at times encouragement from the coach. I didn’t say NIL was THE driving factor, nor did I diminish your A & B factors, but not all NIL deals are disclosed, & all other things being equal I do know many transfers ask about potential income from working camps, appearances, and anything else that might be available. If there are several schools interested and the academic factors, coaching, and comfort level are somewhat equal, NIL possibilities may then become a driving factor. JMO

No you didn't say it was. I was piggy-backing off of it to expand on the NIL point.

There are those who assume that NIL is a large reason for why players make the move, when in reality it likely isn't. Similar to professional leagues where a small portion of the players make the large contracts. It sometimes feels that players get lumped into the same category when they shouldn't.

Leveraging what you can out of a scholarship, be it Cost of Attendance, NIL, coaching camps, internships, etc., they should do that for sure. Every little bit helps.

If I was defending Morrow, I would love to see her take all the outside shots she wanted to. She’s a beast in the post, and just average everywhere else.

They’re both starters and have been the stars on their respective teams. Neither one is going to be interested in coming off the bench.

Well she was with Emily Engstler (a former teammate and good friend) who just so happens to play for the Indiana Fever. Could just be a coincidence.

I defer to the " oldude". As a Maniac, I am a big McK Holmes fan!
 
Next year will be crowded for anyone coming in and wanting to make a name for themselves but the year after that might be different. AE will be gone as will Paige and Nika so playing time opens up so does her chance of leading the team to a championship. The challenge for UCONN in my opinion is she will be light years from home and I think she has too many decent options closer to home.

Not sure how a bunch of old geezers predicting glorious things for their team translates to pressure for anyone, let alone a group of elite athletes who have all (or virtually all) played for years and years in all kinds of pressurized situations ranging from one on ones and horse vs their best friends to, club, local, regional, state, and national championship games and in some cases, playing on the national team!
Somehow, I think they can manage to shoulder the awesome responsibility that is being foisted on them by the demanding and unfeeling denizens of the Boneyard without collapsing into a quivering bowl of jello!
This is part of the ride for them (the fans) and goes on (to varying degrees) at every school in the country! It is part of what makes collegiate sports so great!
Furthermore, I’d be willing to bet that the almost universal reaction to fans expectation/adoration is one or more of the following; don’t know/don’t care, amusement, gratitude, and/or pride that they are part of a team that is admired and adored by thousands and thousands of fans who are wishing them nothing but success!

Perhaps gone! I’d be willing to bet a substantial amount that at least one of those players will suit up the following year as well.
