Georgetown Post Game Thread

It's me, the guy who thinks crapping down your leg for 1/4 of a basketball game is actually bad. What audacity I have.

I think the problem is we usually don't go into 'prevent' offense with 8 minutes left, we also usually have someone who's much better at taking tough shots, Cole/Bouk/Newton/Spencer could get away with freestyling because they'd thrive in that role for iso heavy offenses. McNeeley would've probably helped a lot taking turns isoing with Diarra during that dry spell.

Our record in games where we take the air out of the ball to the displeasure of the fanbase is like 85-0 under Hurley.

I literally could not care less.
The most annoying thing about the 2nd half offense was the fact I couldn’t get a good recording of us getting a basket for my IG story

Please god, let the biggest point of debate about UConn basketball for the rest of the season be about the two time running national champions/best program in college basketball screwing up their “metrics” in garbage time! Are we a bunch of spoiled mofos, or what!?

I think 2 things can be true. That was Hurleys strategy. And it wasn’t supposed to look that bad lol

No RJ Cole is clearly a better player and scorer. First Team all Big East. Diarra is just a complentary piece on a good team. I love his defense but he is just an adequate Point Guard. Wow some peope really don't appreciate what RJ Cole brought when he was here.
Where is this coming from? Cole was a better scorer/shooter sure but I’ll take Diarra when it comes to everything else, especially D. Diarra is an elite perimeter defender and Cole was consistently abused. Diarra also has a chance to break the UConn single season record for assists even without starting the first couple games of the season. he’s much more than adequate

Last 8min aside, a lot to like in this game.

Karaban bounceback. Tarris a Kodiak on D. Solo did Solo things. Crazy that a 3-8 day from 3 drags his yearly average down…

Mahaney with some really good minutes. As someone else said, his D seems to really be improving. Is showing signs of getting more comfy on offense.

Samson playing with toughness & battling while limiting fouls. Had about 4-5 great disruptive high hedges for his haters! Is 5 reb his season high?

Nowell did some really nice things, also made some freshman mistake things. No worries. Keep giving him ~10-15 min of run. At the very least, it banks rest minutes for Hass without much drop off.

Already mentioned Ross in another post.

Keep stacking wins and improving!

Yeah, that early second half run was like past couple years. Were you blink and all of a sudden we’re up 20 and you’re like how did that happen?
And by the way, solo‘s always been a walking bucket - member when he filled in last year for castle? kids jumper is wet- very underrated offensive player.

I blame Hurley more for that than Hass. The good thing about those possessions in the last 8 minutes is that they burned the entire shot clock and there were not many live ball turnovers. But overall, the burning of the clock is not great because UConn doesn't have that one player that can just make stuff happen off the dribble (i.e. Kemba, Shabazz, Boatright, Butler, Hamilton, Ray, Newton, Spencer, etc.) when the shot clock runs down.
Yes we do, but he is out with an ankle injury at the moment.

Alex bouncing back is a great thing very happy for him and the team it was needed for all. Ball made some shots early helped us play a decent 1st half much batter than the last 2 vs PC and Nova for sure. Hoyas looked nothing like the Marquette game I saw them in, I mean some of it was our defense but they looked sloppy and frustrated. Ross some decent minutes still needs to slow down. Nowell is going to be good keep finding minutes need more of him with confidence.

Listen from about the 12 minute mark of the first half (rough start again need Diarra to start better from the go, he is playing like a 6th man from the jump) to 8 minutes left in the game we looked like a good basketball team. They should be embarrassed with last 8 minutes getting outscored 29-4. Letting Diarra dribble down the clock is a horrid coaching decision the ratio of success isn’t very good at all. The ratio of getting a good shot even is awful. Run your offense, you had them on their heels. We didn’t even get foul shots because we didn’t run anything at all, it was terrible to watch. So happy where we were until 8 minutes and I won’t complain about a win but wow, not a pretty finish at all.

I love Diarra but in a perfect world he is a sixth man. Cole was Big East first teamer and a lot better shooter. Plus this all started about who was a better player at end of clock/end of game situations. Clearly RJ Cole was better at that than Diarra has been.

I think you're selling Diarra short. "In a perfect world" was last season where we had NBA talent at every position in the starting line-up. That's exceedingly rare.

He has shown that he is more than capable of being an elite pass-first PG that can run a high-octane offense. It's January and he's 9th in America in APG and first in the Big East. He also has elite defensive skills, with the only drawback being that he's a bit undersized. And, with the exception of today's game, he takes care of the ball beautifully.

Johnson had a season high 5 rebounds today. Season high.
Who used to do the clutching sand drills to strengthen their hands? Was that Sanogo?

Samson gets his hands on many a rebound, but he's like a drunk toddler. I suspect if there were a drill to improve his coordination, we'd have tried it already but it's puzzling because he doesn't fumble balls on the offensive end.

Metrics are whatever. But why waste 8 minutes with that idiotic mess when you can play young guys and give them some real time action? If all you’re going to do is deliberately bleed clock with the starting unit at zero value, why not throw a Nowell or even an Abraham out there to give them some run? Run some actions in low risk time to get some reps? I found that display truly pointless. It’s one thing if you’re some dominant team where it doesn’t matter, this group is not. 8 minutes against a real BE opponent is valuable opportunity for many members of this team to develop.

People have been saying that for 7 years since Dan Hurley got here, and yet it continues to work

Exactly. Literally all I hear in this thread is people without BBIQ. At that stage you do ANYTHING to limit possessions. Period. A PG knows that.

I'm disgusted by how this fanbase remembers RJ. He averaged, what, 16/4/4 his senior year?

We were up 23 at the 8 minute timeout, up 20 at 6:40. The the risk of losing the game at that point was mathematically .5%. There was zero risk.
