Does it really matter? Like, I never get concerned with garbage time
Some game they will be up less and need to milk clock and then get a good look. They had a huge lead and couldn’t lose, but they looked so bad over the last 8 minutes. Diarra has been great this year, but today was a pretty rough game for him, and he really ran the milk the clock offense poorly. He did for the most part, break the press, and not turn the ball over, so I will give him credit for that.

When we were in super stall mode, we delayed picking up the ball after made GU baskets in order to let the clock run. Did anyone notice that the ref started the 5-second inbound count before AK actually grabbed the ball? And that forced AK to rush to grab the ball and make a quick pass, which resulted in a turnover (Hassan stole it right back).

The basket was made with 4:42 remaining in the 2nd half. The ref started his count at 4:36.

Can he start a count before the inbounder has possession of the ball? If anything, I feel like it warranted a delay of game warning.

I love Diarra but in a perfect world he is a sixth man. Cole was Big East first teamer and a lot better shooter. Plus this all started about who was a better player at end of clock/end of game situations. Clearly RJ Cole was better at that than Diarra has been.
Sometimes life isn’t perfect, and in that imperfect world Hassan is a hell of a leader and a PG. It won’t be 2023-24 every year.

I watched the game on replay knowing the final score. That last 8+ minutes was an embarrassment. The last 2 UConn teams would have watched G'town walk to the locker room totally demoralized and the rest of the Big East quaking in their boots. I'm not sure this team is ready for prime time.

I'm basing this off what I have seen from Nowell so far in limited minutes. Maybe it is more hope as Diarra and Mahaney don't really instill confidence attacking the basket.
The only drive to the basket he had today was a wide open path. Mahaney, that's actually one of the things we know he's good at, it's the PG play and decision making that's his issue. And Diarra is actually pretty good at driving to.the basket. I want Nowell to be good as much as anyone, and I think he's going to be great for us over the next few years, but he's not going to come close to replacing Diarra this year.

I’d like to see guys like Abraham and Nowell get more run in situations like that where we feel that comfortable with the lead that we don’t feel it’s imperative to score in bunches there.
With the pesky defense and tenacity GTown played with all the way to the end, putting in two freshmen would not have been a smart move.

No RJ Cole is clearly a better player and scorer. First Team all Big East. Diarra is just a complentary piece on a good team. I love his defense but he is just an adequate Point Guard. Wow some peope really don't appreciate what RJ Cole brought when he was here.
What is your issue with Diarra? Did he steal your girlfriend or something?

I agree RJ Cole is underappreciated, but he did play on a weaker team that what we've had the last couple years, including this year, and I dont think he's necessarily better than Diarra.

But I also think that Diarra is very underappreciated. A complimentary piece and "adequate" point guard? Most teams would kill to have such an adequate, experienced, and dawg of a PG who is 9th in the country in assists and solid ast/to ratio.

We were? I thought UConn was favored between 3.5 and 5. With that kind of spread it would be very strange if Kenpom had Georgetown favored. Can you show me the Kenpom predictor? I'm curious to see how that could be.

I have no issue with Diarra except he is way down the list of great UConn PGs. He does what he does fine. Brings the ball up, runs the offense, plays great D, hits and occasional shot and hits FTs. It is just that his offensive game regarding scoring has a lot to be desired and especially at the end of the shot clock. I would rather have a big better scorer from the PG position but he is our best option right now. He has a very suspect jump shot too which dosn't help him when he can't drive to score.

You mean the one where Nowell didn’t fight through a weak screen and let Epps get wide open for a corner 3?

Pay attention instead of just blindly trying to hate on players you don’t like for some reason. Embarrassing.
No I mean the one he took from the corner with 15 seconds to go in the half instead of waiting for the last shot. Maybe you should do a better job of understanding what people say instead of looking for a fight. And I happen to like J Ross. With more experience I think he will a player. It was said his only mistake was pulling up for a jumper when he had a clear lane to the hoop. I was only pointing out another one which led to a made 3 pointer by Georgetown to close the half.

I love Hassan. He's playing great at PG, averages 6.7 APG with a tremendous assist to turnover ratio. He's also a
defensive lock down

I'm thankful for the man, always have been. Was universally mocked on this board when I said he would average 15 MPG before the 23/24 season. He's better than RJ, who I also love.

Kept looking over at Dan Hurley to see if he would take the bait from the G-Town crowd. He barely reacted. Also relatively calm with the refs despite that glaring foul imbalance in the first half. A lot of pushing off by the GT guards on offense with none of it called.

It’s been happening a ton, somehow allowed by the refs vs PC, Nova and GTown. The most obvious is fighting through screens they are holding and bodying to stop any advantage coming off the screen for our guys. It’s been happening so consistently and allowed I’m now immune to screaming at the TV:D

He’s a good player and a very good defender, lock down no. That’s Ricky Moore and Castle not quite Diarra. He’s a 6th man, real damn good one, who has been forced to be the #1. He’s been doing an adequate job no doubt but we’d be better if his minutes were limited more to a 6th man. With this team though it is what it is, and we have to be happy with him. He’s not good with the ball late in the shot clock, actually the exact opposite but I blame that on Dan Hurley because it continuously comes to that. Yesterday was the worst and again on Dan Hurley. He will benefit more to getting Liam back as he’s the only other player who can create offense off the dribble in a consistent manner. We also need him to have better 1st halves he seems to be a bit tentative early on, maybe also due to nor having Liam now in the lineup.

Hey this kid is a monster piece of our NCs his improvement was dramatic last year, leading to his BE award. What’s not to like overall?

I’m not sure of the exact rule, but I bet refs and opposing coaches have been tired of UConn doing that since last year. And honestly I agree with them. Strategically it’s a good move from Hurley, but it makes for annoying viewing. I’d much rather just inbound the ball 5 seconds earlier and actually score

Chipping in on the RJ Cole debate as well - all I’m going to say is that the only similarity is that RJ also wasn’t supposed to be the “get the ball and go get a bucket” role, and look what he turned it into..our fanbase really doesn’t give him the respect he deserves

You're just wrong. Cole was the best player on our team for 2 years. One of those teams was about as good as this team. And he's a pro player. Don't see Diarra as a pro anywhere. Cole also never had as poor a game as Diarra yesterday, 2-8 fg, 4 turnovers, 3 blocked shots and just bad decisions. When Diarra is good he's a top 4 player on the team but he was really bad yesterday.

The issue there and why the ref started counting was that all 5 UConn players set up inbounds to run the press break, and nobody picked up the ball to inbound it. They'll let it slide if the player is just being slow picking up the ball, but nobody at UConn was making any effort because they all thought someone else was going to

Think Karaban is hung up on the missed FTs? :) great game by AK

Solo continues to shoot the lights out. I'm a HUGE fan of his newfound ability to get into the lane and hit that short midrange

Diarra had a bad first half, but excellent jobs by Mahaney for holding it down early in the half and Ahmad Nowell for giving solid minutes late in the half

Great work on defense. Cooley didn't run much real offense and told his guys to just try to beat UConn 1 on 1. Everyone stepped up to the challenge, GTown shot under 40%

Tarris beat him up a bit in the second half, but I really like Thomas Sorber. If he sticks around, he's going to be a solid player for GTown. Is he on mock draft boards?

That's how you bounce back. Go on the road and run them out of their own gym. That was nice of Hurley to let them get it to single digits in what felt like a 20pt win. Let's go Huskies!
I agree with you. Diarra was doing that also. So was Alex. But Solo seems to wiggle his way in and produce that hanger.

I do wonder if Hurley was hiding the play book for the next game against Creighton which isn't till Saturday, McDermott always has us scouted out. Game was won on the road win and get out with no more injuries and less film for Creighton to see.

They need to learn somehow. If they can’t be trusted to play in a 20 point game, then when? The worst case scenario is they turn the ball over, Georgetown cuts the lead to 12 sooner, they get pulled, and the Huskies try to score?

Two years ago they needed to come from behind to beat a much worse Georgetown team by 11 at Gampel. But never let the truth get in the way of a dramatic message board post, right?

I was at the game in 115) where we were inbounding it there) and noticed that. Total BBIQ there immediately reminded me of us doing that all the time last year. Loved it. Winning March mentality.
