Geno's telephone congratulations to Mo'ne Davis dubbed a "violation"[merged thread]

This has to be a new record response time by the NCAA. One has to wonder what they have against UConn.

"It shows you what is wrong not only for things that go on but also with some of the people that I coach against," he (Geno) said.

My money's on Kentucky, Rutgers or Penn State.
I doubt any of those. Coquese has great respect for Geno.

The men didn't have a recruting violation. It was having to low an APR.

What was unfair is they went back to prior years before the guidelines were set.
There were issues of illegal contact by assistant coaches at one point weren't there?

Does anyone have the video clip of Geno and Mo'ne?

I would like to have a copy.

They can make lives miserable for people in an attempt to prove their power but they have lost all ability to project anything moral or good with a right to be taken seriously.
The NCAA, through their inability to consistently apply even their own convoluted rules, has lost the moral high ground. The key to moral behavior is ethical principles consistently applied...

.-.
UConn needs to stop cheating because the NCAA is just waiting to drop the hammer on us. We need to do it better and cleaner than anyone else or eventually it will be a death by a thousand paper cuts.

UCONN didn't cheat. This is similar to being thrown into jail by a corrupt regime by making up a law as they go along. The UCONN compliance office said it was okay and anyone with common sense would agree. The NCAA has something in for UCONN.

The hit UCONN took on the men's side was a joke. Even this past year the seeding of the UCONN men was a joke. This recruiting violation handed down by an incompetent and corrupt regime is a joke. .The comments we hear from the NCAA during the basketball selctions were comical and an embarrassment though I can no longer remember what was said- I just thought the man was a joke. The complete disregard for what UNC did was a joke. The NCAA is a joke.

If you're referring to Nate Miles in 2010, then yes. I don't think Miles ever even made it to campus, but UConn and Calhoun were sanctioned for the infractions nonetheless. I think the rules changed shortly thereafter.

I meant the phone call. It was shown on ESPN wasn't it. I remember the fuss they made about it. Positive fuss.

I am not sure if it was mis reported or not but on the news this morning they said "a school from the AAC has reported UConn Coach Geno Auriemma".

Heard that it was an AAC school several times on TV

No scholarships were lost. The number of allowable off-campus recruiting days was cut from 130 to 90 for the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 recruiting periods.

Wait...Geno has been transformed into the NCAA?????????

They lost scholarships for 3 academic years (one per year for 2 years self-imposed with the NCAA tacking on the third year). And Calhoun was suspended for 3 games. And the team was on probation until February of this year.

By the way Mo'ne is on Fallon tonight. I don't think she will be dancing on stage like Stef though given the decade in age difference.

Soooooo, the next time ANY girls youths teams play at a woman's college basketball game, for example at half time or before the start of a game, is that a violation? And what if they give the girls shirts, basketballs or just talk to them?

This is beyond stupid.

If I have my guesses I'm leaning any of 3 ways! Muffet McGraw, ND / Brenda Frese, MD / Holly Warlick, TN. The first 2 because of obvious nasty/ jealous comments previously, or TN through the SEC!
I think it really sucks that anyone can accuse someone of violations and the NCAA won't release those people or the school! It can't happen in a court of law but the NCAA has no clue!
And even if it is a minor violation you have to be pretty petty to go after something like this!

no doubt, the media rarely shows her petty, nasty side. Frese has a jekyll and hyde personality. The Maryland myth " we are a big happy family"

Miles made it to campus and shortly thereafter was escorted off of campus for very poor behavior. In between, he never made it on the court.

Call me naive then. My worry now is that the complaint is quietly dropped in a few months after the NCAA or conference gets around to investigating it, but all anyone remembers is UConn was accused of cheating - again - and where there's smoke there's fire even if you can't yet see the flames.

My thought is this will die off, until the tourney, and like Lazarus, it will again raise it's ugly head. Anyone want to disagree with this theory.

I’m waiting to hear that the NCAA has found that the UConn women’s basketball team visiting the White House 4 times since 2009 constitutes a recruiting violation because Obama’s daughters (Natasha & Malia) could be potential recruits. I am not even sure if they play basketball; but, that is a technically that the NCAA clearly is not interested in.

.-.
2 years? I'm betting Geno doesn't sniff retirement until he gets close to or reaches 15 NC's. Not saying that's his goal, but I think he's around for at least 5-7 more years and given the way he's recruiting, it's not out of the realm of possibility that he could win 5 more in no time...

IMHO at a minimum he will finish the 4 remaining years he has left on his current contract.

This is beyond stupid. Details of the phone call were public, how is that a recruiting violation? Who the needs this!!!! Mark Emmett again?

The press release from AD Warde said that Geno called the UConn compliance office for approval before he made the call and they told him it was OK to make the call. Then he made the call.

My question here is what rule was violated? If they define a prospective student-athlete as someone who has started ninth grade classes, then it can't be that rule. Or does the NCAA not even have to cite the rule?

Apparently the call was in violation of rule 13.1.3.1. I wonder if no one complained would the NCAA even have done anything? The whole thing was made very public.

Will the NCAA reverse course? This is getting quite a lot of bad press.

My dad used to have a saying in situations such as this and I'm sure it wasn't his originally: it takes a bigger man to admit he's wrong.

I find it odd that the NCAA ruled this as a secondary violation using this girl's celebrity as basis for their decision.

I doubt they will backtrack at this point especially given all the attention.

And I believe the finger pointing and speculation is harmful because it's based on no evidence whatsoever, only conjecture. Sure as loyal fans we are upset and angry, but in responding in this manner, It kind of makes us look petty IMHO.

That said I do hope we find out who complained....
