Geno calls out men's team fans for reaction after Creighton loss

Totally get that, and I appreciate the moderation of the boards, but just to be clear, I have never made the kind of comments you're talking about, in game chat or anywhere else. Your post, unintentionally I'm sure, kind of sounded like you were suggesting that I had.

Again, though, Geno isn't talking about game chats, or post that you guys have, properly, no doubt, deleted. In an event, it's kind of an unforced era to go there when the reporters question teed him up to celebrate a men's basketball win. Instead, he decided to go after their fans.
He doesn't have to personally be in the chat or on the board to hear about the ish that goes on here. You understand that, right ?

Oh my gosh I'm so happy you asked. Here are 10!!

@Slipperman calling them bums: Creighton Post Game Thread

@Mr. Wonderful with a terrible take: Creighton Post Game Thread

@UConnTrumbull telling Alex Karaban it's over Creighton Post Game Thread

@Mets1432 saying we won't make it out of the first weekend and we're a joke: Creighton Post Game Thread

@RuffRuff had an entire debate with the board about how Alex Karaban is not good

@3rdbass says Reed doesn't block anything anymore (6 blocks against St. Johns : D)

@freshler40 saying we have a weak bench: Creighton Post Game Thread

I could go on. The takes are so excessive, so unnecessary, and just incredible overreactions. That's what Geno is saying.
I deserve this. I also did post after the SJU game that “I owe Alex an apology” lol… also Hurley conveniently mentions that Alex was hurt AFTER the Creighton game ended. I Still deserve to take the L there.

One has the opportunity to self select, here.

"Yes, Geno was talking about me, and I hate what he said about me."

"Heck, that's not me, but there were a bunch around here who reacted just as he outlined."

The choice is yours.
Yeah. Anybody who defends trashing the team is someone who most likely impulsively trashes the team. Fans who don't trash the kids dont stick up for fans who do.

.-.
I have the same sentiments and I get where Geno is coming from, but I just don't get why people are OK with Geno calling fans balloon knots. You just don't do that. Call them out for being too negative or over reacting. Even if there are so many balloon knots as he is suggesting, too bad. They help pay for the programs. If the coaches don't like the criticism, take a job in another state where fans are used to losing. Seriously, it's ok for people to disagree with great coaches once in a while.

edit: I'm getting a ton of thumbs downs from posters I've never seen before. must be flooding over from the women's board to defend their hero. that must be thing over there 😂
Sounds more like you disagree with Geno. I don't see where Geno is wrong and you're right, or vice versa. (Edited from an error)

Not you in particular, but the vibe leans in some cases toward people acting like crybullies complaining about somebody criticizing them. I think those who dish it out should be able to take it coming back, and even expect it. Definitely should not seek protection from it.
oh brother. watch post #1 and come back and see me
I didn't feel the least bit criticized by the initial post. But I also don't sense any progress toward my saying that we are all, in a sense, teammates, and that it's time, on February 27th, after our best win of the year to come together.

I used to think Geno was an arrogant you-know-what of sorts.

Ever since I started watching each full WBB season, and witnessed him move through multiple years with a crazy number of injuries and a National Championship drought, I now see him as tender, testy, and tenacious. He's 4 months younger than I am. Things change in the body, the mind, the heart.

He's won National Championships in 4 different decades. His team is on a 45 game win streak, undefeated, unanimously ranked number 1, and dealing with the same rapidly-changing college basketball landscape as Dan Hurley is.

I can relate to getting cranky at times. And I am not at the top of my game in a career where I have reached & sustained highest peaks ever.

I didn't feel the least bit attacked or put down by what he said.

I largely assume that nearly everyone here roots for MBB, holds no hostility toward the WBB team, and would locate some measure of good feeling from both teams closing their seasons with a victory.

No matter what, it's still one game at a time. Go Huskies.

As always, measured and accurate. And well written

I'm untroubled by what Geno said.

I would have worded his final sentence with a different emphasis, but that's a minor individual difference. I didn't go all in on the Women's team until Paige's freshman season, and I never imagined I'd watch just shy of every game of both teams;
OMG, you sad, pathetic loser! LOL!! (I kid, I kid). I've been all in on both for 30 years, season tickets to both. Now live out of state so I can't go, but my mother (a Uconn grad) does. Only tuned out on the men during the very lean Ollie years in 2017 and 2018. It is such an incredible privilege to follow these programs, one of which is THE best of all time, the other being merely in the top 5 or so. And I still cringe at my reaction in the chat during the team's first loss in 2006 at a merely "good" Marquette team. Probably ditched the chat around the same time I tune out in 2017 and 2018, but haven't gone back, mostly due to the rest of the terrible reactions going on in there.

As usual I appreciate your unique style in writing and debate. It's really not as complicated as people are making it out to be. Geno is wrong to make the broad statement that the Men's team has so many arses following it. That is all. I appreciate his coaching ability and his interviews and all he has done for UConn and Women's Basketball. He could have gotten his meaning across without attacking a bunch of UConn fans. I don't agree with what they write. Whoever the very small minority are, maybe they are angry; maybe they are depressed; maybe they are bipolar. We have no idea. But I believe there is a big difference between saying someone is acting like an arse vs saying someone is an arse. You probably know that distinction better than Geno does. And yes, calling a bunch of UConn fans arses absolutely reflects negatively on the program. I've beaten this dead horse far more than necessary.

.-.

I don't know how I feel about this. I appreciate his support of the men's team, but calling fans balloon knots isn't the best look. Also, I don't think anyone called for anyone to lose their scholarship so it seems kind of fabricated to me. That again, I didn't hear the question that set this up. This feels different than me then Hurley's comment which seemed less than a criticism and more an attempt to rally the fans.

I for one am disappointed Geno didn't actually say "balloon knots".

I am unfamiliar with that insult and would have loved to have heard it used for reference.

Fair enough. It's certainly nothing for the two of us to bicker about.

Lol, after a bad loss, you really find those to be excessive? I'll give you slipperman, though and, Ruff Ruff may actually be a troll given that he spent the first half of the season posting more about Michigan than Connecticut.

For the record, I'll provisionally call @Fishy 's post "good for the mojo," like when he railed against Hurley's fatal error in not recruiting a point guard for the 2022-23 team, before Tristen Newton somehow materialized as the player many posters thought he wasn't.

That's kind of the point 80s. His comment was directed at the men's team and he asked how can that one team have so many balloon knots following it. Like you said, every sports program has them. He had no reason to take a positive question and reply negatively about UConn Basketball fans. He didn't call anyone out. He criticized a large chunk of the men's program. Total D move.
Are you a big donor who thinks it’s ok to slam the team after a loss? It sure seems that way.

.-.
Geno was the guy being a jerk. You don't call your fans balloon knots. We don't even know what the heck he was referring to. Could be one post, but he makes it sound like it was hundreds of posts. I'm not afraid to say the great one was wrong, because he was. No need to demean the program by saying we have lousy fans and that is exactly what he did. Lousy job by geno. and his cult.
Why are you getting your widdle feelings hurt for other people who deserve the exact truth that Geno spoke? I imagine you identify with them in some way; you’ve always been one of the enduring village idiots here with awful takes. Geno doesn’t care about nor need the fans he was calling out. UConn has been and will be fine without them. He doesn’t owe them any patience this long into his legendary tenure.
