Geno calls out men's team fans for reaction after Creighton loss

I'm not familiar with the chat and don't know the context, but I do know that EVERY fan base in the world acts like ours. It's part of being a fan. Geno is THE GOAT coach of all sports forever; however, this is a bad look. Sometimes he says stupid stuff.

There are some people in Gampel who seem to genuinely hate being there, screaming negatively at Hurley and our players all game, and I can’t understand why they keep shelling out money for season tickets.
had one next to us last season, constantly critiquing and yelling at our players, didn't matter how well we were doing or how much we were up in the game, something wasn't up to his standards. Also would salt the yelling with curses, what a nightmare. One of the only nice perks of the re-shuffling of season ticket holders is he's not in our new section.

He is 100% right. Not an incorrect word said. That is why I don't accept the ridiculous reactionary unfair vitriol some spew on this board AFTER CLOSE WINS, not to mention losses. We are fans. Not coaches. We should be supporting our guys, it's the only thing we can do to actually help them win, which is what we all want. Good on Geno.

And the absolute worst is the vitriol spewed on social media, where the players absolutely see it. It. Does. Not. Help. Anyone.

.-.
Totally get that, and I appreciate the moderation of the boards, but just to be clear, I have never made the kind of comments you're talking about, in game chat or anywhere else. Your post, unintentionally I'm sure, kind of sounded like you were suggesting that I had.

Again, though, Geno isn't talking about game chats, or post that you guys have, properly, no doubt, deleted. In an event, it's kind of an unforced era to go there when the reporters question Tea him up to celebrate a men's basketball win. Instead, he decided to go after their fans.
He said it so Dan won't have to. My guess is they've talked about the subject and agree.

I skipped this board after the Creighton loss because I didn't want to read the overreactions, but I also feel like real fans -- however emotional or irrational -- have a right to criticize the team's play.

I don't know what comments Geno was responding to, or where he read them, but it's not like people here were singling out players and wishing them harm or telling them to transfer, were they? Were people being that gross even on Twitter? Seems unlikely.

I guess where I come out is: people shouldn't wet their panties and be abusive, but Geno also doesn't need to chime in on everything. Remember his comments suggesting Hurley should take the Lakers job?
This is a whole lot of nothing. Geno doesn't have a filter, it's one of the things I like about him. I like Geno and I consider him an , it's a term of endearment. The whole takes one to know one thing.

Geno talks about how his players play lazy and suck at things on the court when they win by 50 and he criticizes the fans who pay money to go to the women's games. The fans of course can do the same.

Some fans tend to be pollyanna cheerleader types, some tend to be more negative sky is falling types, and some are more the call balls and strikes type (point out the good and the bad.) Whichever way you are doesn't make you a better or worse fan.

One thing I've never understood is going to the games to yell at the players and if you make things personal you've crossed the line.

I have the same sentiments and I get where Geno is coming from, but I just don't get why people are OK with Geno calling fans balloon knots. You just don't do that. Call them out for being too negative or over reacting. Even if there are so many balloon knots as he is suggesting, too bad. They help pay for the programs. If the coaches don't like the criticism, take a job in another state where fans are used to losing. Seriously, it's ok for people to disagree with great coaches once in a while.

edit: I'm getting a ton of thumbs downs from posters I've never seen before. must be flooding over from the women's board to defend their hero. that must be thing over there 😂

You've gotten multiple from me and I post all the time. You're incorrect, but I respect your right to be incorrect :)

Why defend the jerk fans? He’s only calling out the jerk fans. Not all donors are jerks, just the jerky ones. I’m a donor and I’m not offended. I’m not alone.

Geno was the guy being a jerk. You don't call your fans balloon knots. We don't even know what the heck he was referring to. Could be one post, but he makes it sound like it was hundreds of posts. I'm not afraid to say the great one was wrong, because he was. No need to demean the program by saying we have lousy fans and that is exactly what he did. Lousy job by geno. and his cult.

Outside of the chat/posts on here - think you need to expand your UConn Twitterverse/IG follows… replies/comments get mighty fugly @ times.

Good thing you missed the time he’s called out the Boneyard by name

Geno is the Godfather!

"I forgo the vengeance of my son (Uconn MBB). But I have selfish reasons... my youngest son was forced to leave this country (Uconn WBB)... Now I have to make arrangements to bring him back here safely cleared of all these false charges. But I'm a superstitious man and if some unlucky accident should befall him... then I'm going to blame some of the people in this room, and that I do not forgive."

Geno wasn't calling me a balloon knot and he doesn't give a rat's patooie about your criticism

sounds like Geno stepped on some toes!

Geno is a smart guy but sometimes says some dumb things. This is one of those times. UConn fans are loyal and support both teams in attendance and financially.
I think one of Geno's enduring quality is he's honest and candid .. criticism of the play of UConn teams is understandable but some FANS go to such crazy extremes that they deserve to be shamed a little bit .. are these guys really fans of the team or as Geno put it, fan's of winning so they can brag about championships to their buddies? Maybe they ought to take a timeout before they say such cruel and hateful things about players that are playing their hearts out but are human and flawed and occasionally screw up or play poorly

Wow, Geno's comments are touching a nerve with quite a few posters here. Some of you better pipe down, before somebody starts reposting your comments from the Creighton thread...
Yeah, I'm calling this out as BS. Back it up with actual posts, or men up and admit you've never read that thread.

Wow balloon knots. That's weak, that people are upset by it. He's right. Every sports program is going to have thousands of balloon knots for fans. They make the most noise when things are tough and they're off-gassing.

Oh my gosh I'm so happy you asked. Here are 10!!

@Slipperman calling them bums: Creighton Post Game Thread

@Mr. Wonderful with a terrible take: Creighton Post Game Thread

@UConnTrumbull telling Alex Karaban it's over Creighton Post Game Thread

@Mets1432 saying we won't make it out of the first weekend and we're a joke: Creighton Post Game Thread

@RuffRuff had an entire debate with the board about how Alex Karaban is not good

@3rdbass says Reed doesn't block anything anymore (6 blocks against St. Johns : D)

@freshler40 saying we have a weak bench: Creighton Post Game Thread

I could go on. The takes are so excessive, so unnecessary, and just incredible overreactions. That's what Geno is saying.

What are the cruel and hateful things about players that have been said?
literally read any social media post on UConnMBB's IG page after any close win, or god forbid a loss. It's disgusting. Go read the post after the creighton game right now please.

That's kind of the point 80s. His comment was directed at the men's team and he asked how can that one team have so many balloon knots following it. Like you said, every sports program has them. He had no reason to take a positive question and reply negatively about UConn Basketball fans. He didn't call anyone out. He criticized a large chunk of the men's program. Total D move.
