Furman Postgame Thread

Furman came out in a 1-3-1, so whatever we had drawn up wasn’t going to work. But a well drilled team knows what to do in that situation. It’s not the first time a team has shown zone for that reason - and I bet if someone did that to the 2024 team, we’d have yelled out “Fire” or whatever the secret code word was and ended up with Newton lobbing it to Castle for a dunk or finding AK in the corner.

The look Mullins got would have been ideal 5 seconds later but he couldn’t resist putting on his Chucky costume.
Agree the timing wasn’t good, and better to resist shooting at that moment, but he was so wide open, and it was a shorter 3-point shot not a 35-footer, I’d probably have shot it myself. Don’t they say shooters have to shoot?

Well, it's a win. Duke struggled against Siena, so it happens.

I'd actually be curious to see what the record for 1 and 2 seeds are when they beat their 15 or 16 by single digits our under 12 points. Not sure if there are enough people interested in seeing those numbers, though. 13 1 seeds won by 9 or less since 1985, finding that out for 15 seeds might be more of an undertaking.

Wondering how those 13 1 seeds did, though, moving forward.
In 2005 we struggled with 15 seed UCF before losing in the 2nd round.

In 2006 we struggled with 16 seed Albany before struggling again with Kentucky, Washington, and in the Elite 8.

Small sample, but in our history, teams that are going to have a smooth ride usually do so out of the gate. Sunday looks like a tossup.

Ugh, I remember that 2005 team, I think NC State (10 seed) won the next game by 3.

So strange to think of UCF as a 15 seed.

At this point Mullins and Ball are aiming and thinking on their 3 point shots. Anyone who’s a shooter knows that doesn’t work. Just need to relax and let it fly.

The math says these will start to drop. Looking forward to Sunday.

The officiating was terrible tonight. Saw a few clean blocks by UConn, the phantom foul on Solo on the 3 point shot. The screw up with the goaltending call. Meanwhile Tarris was being held, and nothing.
Agree there were some phantom calls, the goaltend was actually a goaltend so I am not upset about that one. The refs owned up to handling the call change poorly. It was the right call though.

Our guys need to start knocking down the open looks. The poor outside shooting is not isolated to just this game though. Gotta figure this cold streak cannot continue.

Hit just a few of those open looks and this game is over much earlier. The misses kept Furman confident.

I watched a lot of basketball yesterday, my eyes hurt but didn’t we all see players from most of these teams raining 3’s from all over the floor? Off the dribble, hands in their faces, everywhere and all night? The janitor was throwing them in during the timeouts.
Yet we have a so called lottery pick who takes 1000 shots a day barely getting rim?
Mullins had a good game with those 2 critical steals and midrange and we don’t win without him and what he provided but how many times does he take over a game? He’s being drafted as a future primo shooter, isn’t it time he starts to show it?

Glad we won. Glad we have Tarris. Solo and Mullins need to snap out of this horrific funk from 3. I am going to say this about Mullins: he is a phenomenal talent and seems and sounds like a phenomenal kid. That said, his game isn’t ready for the next level. His defense is only slightly better than Solo’s at this point, which isn’t a compliment. And now he can’t shoot 3’s either???? No bueno.

Trudy, “ready to play in the NBA” vs “ready to sign an NBA contract” are two very different things to me. I can’t see a single aspect of his game that would hold up in the NBA right now. I wonder what the over/under on ppg and min/game would be right now. Somewhere between Hawkins and McNeeley?

I do hope he lights it up going forward.

Less about being ready and more about his stock and value. We have barely seen flashes lately of what resembles an NBA talent in this talent rich draft. I am not sure what in his bag is so convincingly NBA value over so much of the talent coming out. He has a fairly non existent floor dribble game. He makes a ton of mental errors. His perimeter shooting is 36% and he’s 6 for his last 42 from 3. He’s not great on the defensive end if the floor. He’s slight, narrow.

His best game may have been Kansas.

I’m hoping the draft works out for him, but my eye ball test over the duration isn’t seeing anything I’m sold on as exceptional NBA upside.

Some of these clanks he throws up are unlike anything I’ve seen.

What's most disappointing about the 3 point shooting yesterday is that they were mostly wide open 3s. Mullins is 6 of 42 (14%) from 3 the last 6 games. Personally, I think he is trying to rush his shot release compared to earlier in the season. End of the day, he is a freshman which was evident with his shot at the end of the first half with 10 seconds left on the clock.

Progress is rarely linear and often has periods of regression before a leap in improvement, if you ever tried to improve your golf game, you now what I’m talking about, Mullins will be better than fine at some point, it’s just horrific timing in his growth path. I can’t see any team gambling away a 1 Rd pick on him, though.

Negative ball IQ. Mullins has a habit of taking randomly dumb shots and it’s crazy Hurley hasn’t even corrected him on it.

It’s insane how he can simultaneously have the most mind numbing plays sandwiched between solid ones.
He is an 18 year old kid that got caught up in the moment of the ncaa tournament and being on that stage for the first time. Was it a costly mistake? Of course. But knowing Mullins, I bet that never happens again in his entire career. Cut the kid some slack.

I have no prognostication for Sunday but I do know what we did 20 years ago means less than nothing

Eh, by end of the year he’s not a freshmen anymore - plenty of freshmen balling this year. He’s also an older freshman. You pick these 5 stars up so they aren’t playing like freshmen in March.

He’s known for a quick shot release. He’s off.

That was the dumbest play of the game. Coming out of a timeout up 7. Shot clock turned off. Braylon couldn't hit the broad side of a barn all first half. Reed couldn't be stopped. So what do they draw up? A Mullins three with 10 seconds left that leaves enough time for Furman to hit a three on the other end? I screamed so loud for 30 seconds I think I woke up the entire neighborhood. Just so stupid!

Someone needs to ask Hurley what the plan was there. Because it couldn't have been that.

Draw up? They were in a zone and Mullins shot it on first pass.

You think Hurley drew that up?
