Furman Postgame Thread

Will people please stop saying Braylon isn’t ready for the NBA…people say this every year about our top recruits when they have a stretch of bad games. This isn’t 2002. staying in college to “develop” is not a thing anymore so let’s get over that.
Yes, it’s not 2002, so staying in college one more year to develop and get stronger SHOULD be a more viable option due to NIL money.

And Braylon isn’t having a “stretch” of bad games; he’s been pretty “meh” much of the year. IMO, he’s making Liam look like Steph, in terms of freshman years, and, at this point, you have to wonder whether Liam is at least a little anxious about his prospects for NBA success.

Now the 12th team to win 30 games in program history.

1990: Elite 8 (31-6)
1996: Sweet 16 (30-2)
1998: Elite 8 (32-5)
1999: Champion (34-2)
2004: Champion (33-6)
2006: Elite 8 (30-4)
2009: Final Four (31-5)
2011: Champion (32-9)
2014: Champion (32-8)
2023: Champion (31-8)
2024: Champion (37-3)
2026: TBD (30-5)

Wilkins could be Newton 2.0. We recruited Newton based off his ECU performance against us. Amazing that someone that good ends up at Furman.

Game looks a lot like Wagler’s - more of a big set shooter who is smooth off bounce, and plays with good instincts. Will he really curious to where he ends up.

I have no prognostication for Sunday but I do know what we did 20 years ago means less than nothing

That is a ridiculous post. Odds are, any high seed that stumbles out of the gate in the tournament is going to keep stumbling.

Furman's starters shot 9 for 20 from 3.

They had one bench guy who went 0 for 4.

I don't think it was a stressful game to watch. The game was never in doubt, UCONN had a 5-6 point most of the 2nd half. It was a brilliant by Hurley to give Silas 2 more days of rest because he knew he had manpower to beat this team. If Solo and Braylon make a few more shots that game would been much easier for the fans viewing. Will need more from everyone to beat UCLA for sure!
If my aunt had …. she’d be my unlce. If Wilkins continued shooting 3s at 75% maybe they win.

We have not been a good 3pt team in recent memory….not sure why we expect otherwise at this point. Solos issues have not been 1 or games….they are season long and last year is looking more like an outlier than what he can be expected to bring. We are what our 3pt performance says we are. Let’s adjust and play to our strengths

Our strength is dumping it into Reed and our creative offensive sets that set up great looks from 3. If a Braylon-caliber shooter can’t make those shots we’re cooked anyway. But we need to keep doing it because we’ve seen them fall before and it’s our best shot

Liam shot 38% from the field and 32% from 3 last year. He was more of a focal point than Braylon on a worse team

I find it hilarious people wringing their hands about Wilkins, he did absolutely nothing except play well and with passion. Our guys that are heroes on this board have done way worse, the dude wasn't a punk or dirty or anything, he just got amped up on a couple big shots. Are people really serious with these takes?

I haven't evaluated the dude's game enough to know if he's ready to be a high major player, but I sure liked what I saw in his game and I saw nothing in his personality or actions that made me question his character. Get a grip, people.

Not a fan of court slapping no matter how hot you are
Danny already is a big fan and I'm sure he will look beyond the court slapping for his other attributes.

Dan Hurley, too, had something to say about Wilkins. However, Hurley says he sees familiarity.

“Yeah, I mean, he’s (Alex Wilkins) got great size and is a really talented player. I think coach utilizes him really well offensively. They do a lot of things on offense, and in a lot of ways it’s like looking in the mirror. We do a lot of the same things. They use him the way we use Silas, the way we used T, the way we use Tristan Newton at the point guard position. He’s got great positional size, and you don’t see many freshmen who are as productive as he is, or who can score at all three levels as he can, while also being dangerous as a passer,” said Hurley.

I'm not going to make excuses for Braylon's poor 3pt shooting, but at least he tried contributing in other ways. He was our 2nd leading scorer in the 1st half, and made critical steals and rebounds in the 2nd. I just wish he'd get his 3pt shooting back.

Agree. Has everyone forgotten about Cam Spencer already?

Agree the timing wasn’t good, and better to resist shooting at that moment, but he was so wide open, and it was a shorter 3-point shot not a 35-footer, I’d probably have shot it myself. Don’t they say shooters have to shoot?
FWIW that shot was 33 ft away. It was the longest shot any player took that game. According to CBBD data Braylon is shooting 6/29 from 27+ ft.

On a positive note, it is another hard fought win. Like all other hard fought wins, Hurley tells us how well coached and great the team is that we just beat. But this time, our opponent can’t get obliterated in their next game. Furman is done so we can move on thinking they are great and we got another quality win. If only Villanova didn’t make the tournament.

NBA teams don’t want you staying college. Lotto picks and high first rounders gain nothing staying college even if you’re getting a couple mill to do so. Sure if he drops to the second round maybe it’s a good idea to stay, but I don’t thinks that’s the case.

Still recovering from getting home at 2:30am last night.

What a performance by Tarris! Watching his stats go up on the Jumbotron was like watching a pinball game for two hours.

The play we get at the 2 and 3 as a whole has just been disappointing. Not really any other way to say it. There’s been so little development from the starters as the year has gone on. I keep hearing over and over how we can’t keep shooting this bad from three, the law of averages, etc but it sure feels like we’re on the edge of one or both of these guys shooting us right out of the tournament.

I hope I am wrong but I am really nervous about tomorrow.

Wilkins would solve a lot of issues next to Demary
Wilkins is from Mattapan which is right down the road from me and within Boston. Whether he is willing to play back up or not or have his role reduced is the question.

If I’m about to invest a high pick in a guy with potential but still requires a lot of development, it would sure give me pause that he really didn’t seem to develop at all this year.

St Louis doesn’t stand a chance. UM is just too big
StL kid is in the paint with Mara on him, and he walks because he doesn't know what to do with the ball.

He does foul a lot. Of course, he got 2 phantom fouls last night. Announcers noted it, replay showed it.
Rebie's defensive game has moved to holding early against his man and reaching in too much. That was not his game several months ago. What happened?

Honestly, he hit some tough shots - but I was maybe more impressed that he put two alley oops on a dime moving at full speed. Sorta miss that from our guards.

Not sure if his game will translate, but you look at him and you see his length and his skill and potential. And then you look at Nowell, who is small and isn’t getting off the bench any more at VCU either, and it makes you wonder about these evaluations.
