Furman Postgame Thread

At times I was wondering what’s coming first; a stroke or running to vomit.

1.). It’s obvi that Silas is a must. Could still survive Sunday w/o him - but a must play anything after that. Smith needs to be better.

2.) Mullins was sleeping on D so many times. His shot is such a struggle this month. He has to wake up … fast. No way is he NBA ready. Sucks that “experts” are going to put him near lottery pick. He’s 2nd round pick at this point in time.

3.). So surprised with Reibe regression. He handled Zona well and just seemed so lost for the last month.

4.) Need another 30% efficiency improvement from Ball.
Smith had 7 assists and 1 TO. He played decent D and really pressured their PG. If you are expecting him to score anything otrhit FTs I don't know what to tell you. He isn't Demary as far as scoring.

I don’t have much to say about the refs but there is one thing I’d like a clarification on. When the Furman player lost his shoe the refs stopped the game so he could put it back on. Do refs do that? I didn’t think they’re supposed to. As a matter of fact Reed lost his shoe earlier in the game and they didn’t stop the game. Or did Furman call a timeout? I was confused about that.
I know with injuries it’s up to the refs’ discretion when or if to stop play. I’m guessing it’s the same for shoes/other court interferences.

Will people please stop saying Braylon isn’t ready for the NBA…people say this every year about our top recruits when they have a stretch of bad games. This isn’t 2002. staying in college to “develop” is not a thing anymore so let’s get over that.

Congrats to my UConn friends. I hope you saw that Furman was much better than our record. We have good really good talent on the team and it showed last night. Now we hold our breaths to see who hits the portal and if Coach Richey moves on. I will be pulling for you guys the rest of the way. I will say it again, enjoy every moment of what you have at UConn. Never take it for granted.

The officiating was terrible tonight. Saw a few clean blocks by UConn, the phantom foul on Solo on the 3 point shot. The screw up with the goaltending call. Meanwhile Tarris was being held, and nothing.
Omg stop….,that was 100x better than any single BE games. Refs don’t get every single call right, they are human. We also got a “phantom call” our way on Smiths drive late but people on this board don’t highlight when a call goes our way.

The refereeing was more than fine

We are unlikely to beat UCLA without Demary. No team can lose a star in the tournament and expect to go deep.

Well, it's a win. Duke struggled against Siena, so it happens.

I'd actually be curious to see what the record for 1 and 2 seeds are when they beat their 15 or 16 by single digits our under 12 points. Not sure if there are enough people interested in seeing those numbers, though. 13 1 seeds won by 9 or less since 1985, finding that out for 15 seeds might be more of an undertaking.

Wondering how those 13 1 seeds did, though, moving forward.

Depends. They may be missing their best offensive player.

I’d be happy if Silas is at least an option off the bench Sunday. Millendar played well today though.

Did Tarris have the best game (i.e. production) of any UConn center last night?

My memory won't let me get to an answer.

That was the dumbest play of the game. Coming out of a timeout up 7. Shot clock turned off. Braylon couldn't hit the broad side of a barn all first half. Reed couldn't be stopped. So what do they draw up? A Mullins three with 10 seconds left that leaves enough time for Furman to hit a three on the other end? I screamed so loud for 30 seconds I think I woke up the entire neighborhood. Just so stupid!

Someone needs to ask Hurley what the plan was there. Because it couldn't have been that.
Thought I was done drinking for the night….then that play happened

I don't think it was a stressful game to watch. The game was never in doubt, UCONN had a 5-6 point most of the 2nd half. It was a brilliant by Hurley to give Silas 2 more days of rest because he knew he had manpower to beat this team. If Solo and Braylon make a few more shots that game would been much easier for the fans viewing. Will need more from everyone to beat UCLA for sure!

Just an observation, Reed’s play was absolutely insane. Total force down low. Huge congrats to him.
That said, games like that shift the spotlight. You know UCLA is going to pack the paint and make life tougher inside now. If that opens things up for Mullins and Ball to find their rhythm again, that’s a win. We don’t need to live and die by the three, especially when we’re not consistently breaking defenders down off the dribble.
Getting Demary and Stewie some minutes back would be big too. They might need a little time to get their legs under them after missing games, but having that depth makes us tougher across the board.
Honestly? I kind of like this matchup with UCLA. Should be a fun one.

Stats nerd time

With last night’s dominant performance, Tarris Reed has officially become the team’s leader in points per game at 14.3. Also a team high 8.7 RPG and 63.5% shooting

Solo has dropped to #2 at 13.4 PPG, and his shooting splits have dropped to 39.6% FG and 30.3% 3P

Karaban maintains #3 at 12.9 PPG, and is sitting at 38.9% from three as he moves into #1 all time 3PM in a Husky uniform after his 4-9 performance last night

Braylon is at 12 PPG and dropped half a percentage point from three, now at 33.0%

Tarris with an all-time legendary NCAA game-Let alone Husky legendary NCAA game. Played through so many fouls and holds to still muscle his way to 31/27. Thought our second half D-esp. help D-was critical. Malachi had a solid floor game and played some nuisance D vs Wilkins-esp.in second half. Solo and Mullins could learn from AK's production-When the shot isn't falling- contribute in other ways

Law of Large Numbers suggests that our shooters have to have a hot game (or even average shooting percentages)-Doesn't it? Can't say the offense isn't giving them open looks.

Like our chances vs UCLA. Silas on board ??-Reibe showing up- Double/double from Tarris. Team D/boards- Good enough . Lets do this. Keep rolling and ride the Kodiak Bear.

It wasn't. Didn't you see the expression on Hurley's face.

This is not a criticism of Mullins just an observation. Also want to state that I love his game and think one day he is going to be an excellent NBA player. His defense, hustle and basketball IQ is underrated. Once his body matures, look out.

I wish he would concentrate on his mid range game. He is virtually automatic from 2 point range. In the last 6 games he is shooting 69% on 2’s, going 20-29. Most of the 29 shots are not layups. He making floaters, fade aways and shooting over defenders.

Just a thought and Go Huskies!!!!

Furman came out in a 1-3-1, so whatever we had drawn up wasn’t going to work. But a well drilled team knows what to do in that situation. It’s not the first time a team has shown zone for that reason - and I bet if someone did that to the 2024 team, we’d have yelled out “Fire” or whatever the secret code word was and ended up with Newton lobbing it to Castle for a dunk or finding AK in the corner.

The look Mullins got would have been ideal 5 seconds later but he couldn’t resist putting on his Chucky costume.
Agree the timing wasn’t good, and better to resist shooting at that moment, but he was so wide open, and it was a shorter 3-point shot not a 35-footer, I’d probably have shot it myself. Don’t they say shooters have to shoot?
