Furman Postgame Thread

Survive and advance with your starting PG and major rotation guy out; and another dismal shooting night (1/16 from 3 not counting Karaban). At this point I’m reaching a point k fcontentedness in that I know it’s either: we start hitting 3s and make a deep run, or we keep missing, and the basketball gods have decided it’s not our year.

Nice cherry on top for me is I had a perfect day with my bracket and got 29/32 first round games correct, all second-weekend teams still alive

I know the focus is on Silas but Malichi did his job tonight. He took care of the ball and operates the offense. That was all you could ask.

The real problem is Mullins and solo again being MIA. Hell we don’t need them to have a good night at this point. We need them to just get back to bad. That would be acceptable.

Mullins take a hint you made all but one of your two point shots and missed all your 3s take more twos and try to get to the line. Also please for the love of his stop with the jacked 3s. End of the half shot clock off and up 7 you don’t jack up a shot with 9 seconds left. You make sure that you have the last shot of the half so what happened doesn’t.

Solo I don’t know what to say he can’t make 3s, he struggles in the drive and missed the alley oop to Ross killing momentum. At least he is hitting his fts.

I am hoping tonight was a hung over from the St John game. Never seen UConn team playing this poor defensively. It could be due to Silas being out. Mullins and Solo are defensive liabilities when they are making points. Mullins had a couple of key steals and made up for the poor shooting all night from the 3.

We need more from those 2 on Sunday. Thank God for Reed who was man among men. Karaban had a solid game but Reed was the man tonight.
Reed lost his guy as often as Solo.

.-.
That probably is the best game by a UConn player of all time. We lose to a 15 if Tarris doesn’t put the team on his back. We could win the championship, and this performance would probably be the biggest reason it didn’t go up in flames. Thank you Tarris.
He was playing with pure joy. He smiled the whole game. I love that kid. I dont want to hear that we don't have one guy who can win us games. We've had one all season. He's just not a guard (though he still want to be)

That was the dumbest play of the game. Coming out of a timeout up 7. Shot clock turned off. Braylon couldn't hit the broad side of a barn all first half. Reed couldn't be stopped. So what do they draw up? A Mullins three with 10 seconds left that leaves enough time for Furman to hit a three on the other end? I screamed so loud for 30 seconds I think I woke up the entire neighborhood. Just so stupid!

Someone needs to ask Hurley what the plan was there. Because it couldn't have been that.
No way was that the play that was supposed to be run.

I screamed too.

How many of us screamed after that play?

Totally agree. My worry with no Silas was defense but Malachi was fine for the most part. Unbelievable that our shooters continue to have these games.

Granted it was against Furman but honestly kinda encouraging that they were able to put up 40 & 42 each half missing the starting PG and with Solo and Braylon missing about a dozen wide open 3s combined. This discouraging part is I have no hope that Solo and Braylon are actually going to start making wide open 3s. Braylon has to keep shooting the wide open ones but he's also needs to force the issue and put the ball on the deck and get into his midrange pull ups and floaters, he's damn near automatic from there but the volume is so low.

We’re going to remember that Reed performance for years to come. What a game!

Even before the Demary injury news, I was nervous about just getting the first win. I don’t expect an easy win over UCLA but I feel pretty good against a team that has little time to prep for us. Ball and Mullins will step up and make some shots, and a healthy Demary changes everything.

Gotta figure Dema

Horrible D until the last 5 minutes or so. Great down the stretch. The have the ability, gotta be consistent for the full 40 minutes. I think Ball can and will shoot his way out of his slump, but not Mullins. He has the yips from 3, but his mid range game is superb, especially the runners and floaters he is making…..which are more difficult than the 3’s he’s bricking.
So getting into a mid range rhythm early can maybe get him going, but can’t just keep jacking 3’s if it doesn’t.

I have a feeling that we'll start to gel against better teams.

Good point on Braylon brought up on field of 68 tonight. They were doubling off of him all night to guard Tarris and were basically daring him to shoot…which probably got in his head. His whole career up until now has been teams trying their hardest to not let him shoot. Not making excuses but it is a good point.

It’s a W. Without Tarris being a superhuman tonight and AK chipping in, it would have been a disaster. We need guys stepping up everywhere, playing with focused intensity and fearlessly. They can do it but need to start playing for each other instead of playing not to lose.

Furman came out in a 1-3-1, so whatever we had drawn up wasn’t going to work. But a well drilled team knows what to do in that situation. It’s not the first time a team has shown zone for that reason - and I bet if someone did that to the 2024 team, we’d have yelled out “Fire” or whatever the secret code word was and ended up with Newton lobbing it to Castle for a dunk or finding AK in the corner.

The look Mullins got would have been ideal 5 seconds later but he couldn’t resist putting on his Chucky costume.

Well, that went late.

Reed showing out, even though they stopped going to him for like a good 10mins. Glad AK was able to sniper some 3s because, wow, our shooting has sucked of late. Mullins doing Mullins things. He's like my dog I love him, he's a good boy, but also wtf?

Needless to say, I really hope Demary is available on Sunday and going forward, our backups did what they needed to do but I think if Demary was out there it wouldn't have been so rough.

LET'S GO!

At times I was wondering what’s coming first; a stroke or running to vomit.

1.). It’s obvi that Silas is a must. Could still survive Sunday w/o him - but a must play anything after that. Smith needs to be better.

2.) Mullins was sleeping on D so many times. His shot is such a struggle this month. He has to wake up … fast. No way is he NBA ready. Sucks that “experts” are going to put him near lottery pick. He’s 2nd round pick at this point in time.

3.). So surprised with Reibe regression. He handled Zona well and just seemed so lost for the last month.

4.) Need another 30% efficiency improvement from Ball.
