I thought our beloved coach CD made a strategic error by pulling Dorka and Caroline out and putting Aubrey and Ayanna in. Aubrey reverted to two years ago and just stood on the perimeter; Ayanna couldn’t handle the slapping at the ball and got flustered. Florida State went on a run, then was able to regroup mentally and settle in.
Comment about Aubrey and Ayanna standing around spot on. Tough for both to be in at same time. Aubrey can beat most on the drive if she gets the ball within the key but standing 25 feet from basketball not her best spot. Hoping Geno develops more plays for Aubrey that allow her to use her speed and quickness and opens the floor for 3 point shooters. Gutty win today.

The TOs and Steals Big problem. A couple of things. Picking up our dribble. Getting caught in double teams. and forcing passes. The first half we were moving and great passing. Second half FLST seemed to take Edwards out of the game by fouling her. Thus two FLST players fouled out.

Good to see people back and get the win.
I thought our defense was not that good. Too easy to get by us, so we played back and they just shot open shot after open shot. Defense needs a lot of work.

I want to add that the sometimes bizarre calls by the refs, who appearEd o think that they were getting paid per whistle, disrupted both teams. Before anyone claims the refs caused UConn’s problems- no, they didn’t. I actually thought FSU got hosed on some calls in the first half. But, anywho, the refs let some obvious things go then called touch fouls. I thought UConn was more confused about how to play than FSU, who probably fig they were getting call anyway, might as well play their game
Inconsitent performance by refs. Was happy that then FSU started to get chippy, refs started to call fouls but late in the 3rd and throughout the 4th, alot of touch fouls called, many on UConn. Suspect FSU unhappy as well. Huskies do have to do a better job of letting quick guards drive around picks and push into the UConn defender. While I would call an offensive foul, for most of the year the call has gone against UConn on these type of plays - we had this issue in the playoffs last year as well.

Florida State had wracked up several games with scores in the 90-100 point range. They can score. UConn played good defense. Some folks think every game the Huskies play against just about anyone should be a 30-point blowout., and the criticism of players for being less than perfect is also unreal. UConn beat a good team, played a good game.

Thank goodness for Aaliyah. She has been playing some outstanding basketball and today was no different. She stepped up and showed out! Great game, Aaliyah.

Not gonna lie. I was worried about Dorka and her conditioning. Being out for quite a few games. Today, she played well and did not show a lot of signs of fatigue out there. Great job, Dorka.

Nika. Getting them assists! It helps that the players are knocking down shots, but Nika just gets the ball to the players at the right time and at the right spot. Great work, Nika and glad to have you back out there.

Lou. She is just smooth like silk. Just calm, cool, and collect. Hardly ever rattled. Glad that she is on our team. Love her confidence.

Aubrey. Not her best game. She just did not seem to be in the rhythm today. Gotta regroup and get that competitive mindset back.

Caroline. The mystery continues. I hope all is well. She has not looked the same since that Providence game.

Ayanna. Well can't really do much when you only get a few minutes out on the floor. Stay positive.

One substitute at a time, please.

Peck did a nice job explaining why UCONN owned the paint. FSU refused to cheat off UConn three point shooters. Dorka and Aaliyah took advantage.

“Silly” turnovers continue to plague UConn. Lob or sloppy passing are normally cleaned up by this time.

Edwards is heading toward team MVP and or All-American honors.

There can’t be a smoother transition in coaching than when CD steps in for Geno.

Question for the medical experts on the board. What are the spots on Dorka”s arm?

They seem determined to get Ducharme back to the level last of last year. Not there yet.

Good but not a great win. Happy for the return of Dorka and Nika.
The "spots" on Dorka's arms: "Cupping for athletes has been reported to relieve the pain associated with various sports-related injuries including frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, shin splints and sciatica. These often have painful symptoms that can impede movement and worsen quality of life."

Some thoughts on the FSU game:
  • No Geno today. But with Nika & Dorka back in the starting lineup I felt reasonably good about the likelihood that CD would up her all-time record as UConn’s HC to 14-0.
  • Against an aggressive FSU team there were still far too many Husky turnovers. Hopefully, with more healthy players practicing together, UConn will clean up the problem.
  • FSU used multiple defenses to offset UConn’s advantage in the paint as the Huskies got the ball inside frequently for easy layups by Aaliyah in particular, along with Dorka, Aubrey & Caroline.
  • Nika dished out a cool 12 assists but was not at her best coming out of the concussion protocol.
  • We all know that Lou can score. But the more I watch her play, the clearer it is that she takes and makes BIG SHOTS. Whenever FSU looked like they might overtake UConn, Lou seemed to bury another shot.
  • Aaliyah’s ability to establish consistently strong low-post position is in some ways reminiscent of Pheesa, although Aaliyah is bigger and stronger.
  • UConn probably won this game at the foul line going 18/21.
  • Bring on the Pirates!!!
NIka not at her best still good and was impressed by her performance coming off a concusion, particularly since FSU mugged her most of the game. Compliments to FSU for slowing the game down and eliminating UConn's fast breaks and pick and rolls the second half. These are where Nika gets many of her assists so give more of the credit to FSU than taking anything away from Nika.

This team needs to play perimeter defense and stop giving up wide open 3 point shots all game. Another thing when they get back on defense after a made basket the whole team gets caught up under the basket and no one is defending the 3 point shot. Doesn't the coaching staff notice these things?? Most of Florida's 3 point shots where wide open.

the spots on her arms are from a procedure called cupping. my wife has it done by her massage therapist. Many athletes us it and it seems to have healing benefits.

Few comments

1. AE is doing everything -- scoring, rebounding, beat pressure
2. Love Dorka's energy, but never seen a 6-5 get blocked so often
3. Teams are going to continue to leave Aubrey open until she hits shots
4. Lou still a great option on offense
5. CD looking better, but still showing rust.
Our defense looked gassed during much of the game, played well off the three-point shooters and they made us pay. Would have liked to see more substitutions given our starters brief rests especially for the two players that have been out for a while. Our defense around the top of the key needs to improve as we looked tired and didn't close on the shooters well.
Tough game to watch with whistle blowing for most of the game of what appeared to be touch fouls or less. The refs seem pre-conditioned to calling a foul if a player falls down, so most players just fall down too much.
Our half-court offense needs a lot of work. It seemed to result in sloppy passes to well covered players too often.
Still a good game to win against an aggressive opponent.

In the 2nd half UConn failed to show effective offensive ball handling, screening, pace in the quarter court, and movement of the ball side to side. FSU was able to pressure the ball handlers at the arc, double Nika on the perimeter, and work through screens to effectively cut off the outside shot and the entry passes.

UConn failed to respond to FSU defense. FSU made it difficult for UConn to run their actions such as the 45 or the Wave, or any type of chin action on the weak side because of that pressure.
Yes, again, TO's hurt them. But UConn was not able to score at a high rate off the 13 TO's FSU gave them, nor was UConn able to have any type of transition game after the first period. AG's poor play today was puzzling, but once the UConn transition game was shut down so was AG. She was in constant foul trouble, and AG also took only one mid range shot. So UConn again was relegated to only two real offensive threats: AE and Lou.

Defensively UConn, again, failed to effectively cover the arc, and even a poor shooting 3 point team took advantage of it. When they did FSU dribbled around them. FSU also had success working one on one inside the nail, and were frequently able to beat UConn along the baseline. Azzi, get well soon.
Exactly. It's almost like FSU didn't have a scout on UConn. The book is that you can jam them up if you get up on them and don't allow them to run their offense like it's a walk thru practice. And it took them half the game to figure it out. This and UConn playing with only one shooter means a close game for any decent team.

The kid that hit the threes has made 29% all season. The Husky coaches chose to dare her to shoot, like UConn opponents dare Nika, and she made them pay, making 4-10.

Back to Nika—I can not say enough about her step up this year maturity-wise. She was getting mugged. Last year’s version of Nika would have fouled out early in the second half. Really impressed by how she’s retaliating with her game, not with elbows or just clocking offenders.

Nope I’m sure only you are capable of noticing and making these observations.

That was a very entertaining game and a good win against a quality team. FSU played very aggressive perimeter defense on the UConn guards. Playing in close games is really good experience for UConn. It was good for UConn to have to perform in a pressure situation and come out with the win. UConn got the job done today.

This team gets stuck in a half-court offense, especially against teams that play aggressive defense on the perimeter. It leads to a lot of forced passes/TOs or rushed perimeter shots. Ideally, you need the guards to break the initial wall to open things up, either with an open pass or a jump shot. It's inconsistent to say the least. Today, we had a hot Lou & AE, and built up a big enough lead to overcome this, but this will be a problem against good teams. Azzi will help in the future as defenders cant key on just Lou/AE. But, this is the biggest flaw as I see it with this team.

On the defense side, pretty good effort (especially on the boards), but we need to turn good defense/TOs into offense/easy points by running. We did that in the 1st half more than the 2nd. Fatigue is an issue here with a short bench.

Happy with the win. I still think we're a Top 3-5 team with a healthy Azzi.
