I thought our beloved coach CD made a strategic error by pulling Dorka and Caroline and putting Aubrey and Ayanna in. Aubrey reverted to two years ago and just stood on the perimeter; Ayanna couldn’t handle the slapping at the ball and got flustered. Florida State went on a run, then was able to regroup mentally and settle in.
Exactly what I was thinking..I think they were up by 19 when that happened

I want to add that the sometimes bizarre calls by the refs, who appeared to think that they were getting paid per whistle, disrupted both teams. Before anyone claims the refs caused UConn’s problems- no, they didn’t. I actually thought FSU got hosed on some calls in the first half. But, anywho, the refs let some obvious things go then called touch fouls. I thought UConn was more confused about how to play than FSU, who probably figured they were getting called for fouls anyway, might as well play their game
Yes, agree completely. FSU realized that after the second quarter every drive that had body contact of any kind was going to be a foul regardless of who initiated the contact. So that's what they did. Drives into contact and 3s. Since most of the drives sent them to the free throw line, and since they starting hitting their 3s in the second half, the game tightened. We did not adjust well to the way the game was being called.

FSU was also tired...only 9 on bench to play...Snoop only plays 3 minutes and leaves early because of injury...8 left...2 foul out...down to six bodies at end.
Lou Lopez Senechal had four fouls... did not get her fifth! Caroline Ducharme had four fouls...did not get her fifth.
Nika Muhl got her third foul and pulled back some (allowing some lay ups that she could NOT contest with her
fouls) so she also was in the game at the end. KUDOS to UCONN for playing SMART! Note: UCONN only
essentially) six players (YANNA played only 2 minutes). Our "six" were: Aaliyah, Nika, Dorka,
Aubrey and Caroline. So what is this comment about FSU being
"down" to six players at the end ???. and "also tired"... FSU played a gutsy game. But UCONN had the
"grit" to get the " W" ! Go Huskies!

The technical foul on FSU was really strange. I’m shocked Brooke Wyscoff kept her cool so well because that was a horrible call.
... on the other hand, Bejedi's flagrant attempt to get an intentional foul on Nika deserved some official notice. The replays clearly showed that she aped being hit long after Nika had stepped away. Don't worry, I know the refs never call technicals on stuff like that. But the rule is on the books, and if they ever were to, this was a good case.

Funny contrast between our game and the Kantner crew who did the Stanford -Tenn game. Whistles galore in our game yet out in Maples they seem to want to call nothing.

Diana Taurasi has had several run-ins with Jeff Smith. LOL...He gave her a technical once for knocking an opponent's barrette off her head.

What a difference with Dorka and Nika back.. Uconn loses if they were still out..AE is getting consistent with the way she dominates..I actually think that Lou passed up about 5 or 6 shots when she was open..what a shooter..at least they didn't have 20+ TO's,just 19

Oh, yeah, and speaking of bizarre -- How about that flop by (IIRC) Latson when Nika picked up her dribble near the sideline? Latson was called for a foul and then shot her head back after a little body contact. I don't think I've seen anyone from Notre Dame do anything that obvious.

I was behind the FSU bench (way behind) and I still don't know what the technical was called for. As an aside Wyscoff is a completely different kind of coach than "Abe". Her team could have quit early on when they were getting their butt kicked but she made adjustments (especially on Edwards) and got her team back in the game.

I thought both coaches were animated during the game, but they somehow maintained their composure. I never saw Coach Dailey so vocal toward the officials.
Smith tried to explain a bizarre call to Wyckoff, but she just rolled her eyes the whole time.

I might get a record number of thumbs down for this but I thought the difference was not having Geno there to readjust our team after halftime. CD is a good coach but shes no Geno. I just dont think we would have petered out there in the 3rd and 4th quarters with Geno there.

Some thoughts on the FSU game:
  • No Geno today. But with Nika & Dorka back in the starting lineup I felt reasonably good about the likelihood that CD would up her all-time record as UConn’s HC to 14-0.
  • Against an aggressive FSU team there were still far too many Husky turnovers. Hopefully, with more healthy players practicing together, UConn will clean up the problem.
  • FSU used multiple defenses to offset UConn’s advantage in the paint as the Huskies got the ball inside frequently for easy layups by Aaliyah in particular, along with Dorka, Aubrey & Caroline.
  • Nika dished out a cool 12 assists but was not at her best coming out of the concussion protocol.
  • We all know that Lou can score. But the more I watch her play, the clearer it is that she takes and makes BIG SHOTS. Whenever FSU looked like they might overtake UConn, Lou seemed to bury another shot.
  • Aaliyah’s ability to establish consistently strong low-post position is in some ways reminiscent of Pheesa, although Aaliyah is bigger and stronger.
  • UConn probably won this game at the foul line going 18/21.
  • Bring on the Pirates!!!
With the new coach I forgot who Uconn was facing. Different coach same physical, foul, foul, game plan. I'm a believer in do what it takes to win, but fSU only has one mode and I don't like it.

Any team (ND, MD, a bit even Princeton, FSU that plays PHYSICAL with UConn puts themself in a position to win. Uconn doesn't play these physical teams well. -- except today, it took a while but they solved the riddle. Turnovers come more easily against physical teams.

It wasn't pretty last year it wasn't pretty this year---A Win is a Win, no extra points of STYLE.

I'm so happy we have NIKA in these games.

Go look at the stats---3rd quarters haven't ALL been great. CD is a good, better, wonderful coach. She isn't Geno---he puts 3 million each year in the bank and she put 500k (give or take a few, what's a 100k here and there???). CD has (in my memory) never lost a game. Can Geno say the same?? (kidding but true)

UConn is just as physical.

Not picking on you, TCC Kid, but I’m getting tired of seeing post complaining how physical the opponent is. (not prohibiting anything, just talking as a fan). Opponents are trying to bump the Huskies to slow them down or prevent a cut to the basket. It’s how the Huskies play, too. Get used to it

I believe that one of the FSU bench players said something that she shouldn't have to the official after he had called FSU for two lane violations on the missed free throws by AE and then hits the 4th free throw. He pointed at one of the players after he T'd them up.

FSU shot 20 FT's against UConn, 21 vs Purdue, 23 vs Wisconsin....it is the driving style.

I don't think FSU was at all like coach Abe's mean-spirited teams. They are scrappy competitors -- with a side of flopping -- but not at all mean-spirited. I noticed a few Huskies sustained some unwhistled face injuries in the second quarter, but these were just accidental effects of how scrappy FSU is.
