Fanta: St. John's Hiring Rick Pitino

He will be 71 in September. He also said he wants to coach to 80+. Who does that? There are only a handful of coaches who are even 70.
I looked it up and with Boeheim's retirement, Leonard Hamilton at Florida State at 74 and Jim Larranaga at Miami who will be 74 this year are the two oldest D1 coaches. There are a few that are in their late 60s like Tom Izzo, but they are few and far between. Jim Calhoun retired at 69.

He’s a sleaze, but with Nosepicker gone, he’s probably the last holdover from the ‘80s coaching fraternity.
Yes! Someone said with Boeheim retiring the 80's BE was finally over, but of course nothing is over until WE decide it is.

A 6 year deal at age 70?

I get that, for recruiting purposes, he has to make it look like he'll be around a while, but come on.
I think he said recently he's only looking to coach 6-8 more seasons which i found kind of funny.

He's going to be looking for scalps now that he's back in the high majors. They will be in the tournament immediately.

This league is insane.

Slick Rick's face seeing all the UConn fans at MSG for St Johns home game.

This is going to be wild. I expect it to be highly entertaining if nothing else.

Even this guy agrees with you.

Not his way!

When St John's is legit good they have no problem putting a lot of fans in that building.

Ok, but that time was 23 years ago.

Pitino taking the entire Iona staff with him. Big oof for Iona. Gotta think Kimani will be close to the top of their list right now

Yup, the BE has 3 teams in the Sweet 16 and they are dominating the college basketball news cycle during the off day(s) between the 2nd
Woj bomb!

Bad mojo if Anderson sues. I think settling with Ollie was the difference this year as far as mojo. Much more so than any BY hangings. They will end up paying just like UConn did. They just made some sh…t up and fired him. This move will cost the school millions. For a 70 yr old coach…..

I don’t know how realistic the comparison to Connecticut really is. UConn includes its coaches in its teachers union collective-bargaining agreement, and that produced a quirky result where the NCAA compliance provisions were completely written out of the agreement.

That said, it’s always better if the parties can come to an it’s always better if the parties can come to a mutual agreement, rather than litigate.
Post/profession

he’ll be a thorn in our side, but i think it’s a good thing for the league and us.
It's always good to have the best competition. This league is stacked and will be right there fighting it out as best league with the Big 12 and SEC. It's going to up the profile of the league and the money in terms of TV, NIL, win share etc.

I hope he takes Taliek with him.

I heard on WFAN yesterday that Pitino was taking his staff with him. Not sure what their source was as I have not seen it anywhere else.
