I'm not really seeing a big difference in Tennessee's quality of play from last year.

Almost all their buckets came from either driving layups or put-backs off offensive rebounds (Tenn. had 25 O-boards). Outside shooting was poor, just 2 of 15 from the arc.

Their reliance on individual playmaking is also reminscent of last year: only 6 assists on 28 made buckets.

Horston didn't have the greatest game in terms of scoring, but her elite athleticism was certainly evident. On a team with several elite athletes, she may be the most athletic of them all.

Last year Tenn beat CN 128-59. It's difficult to understand how this year's Lady Vol team put up only 70 points.

Austin doesn’t start for Maryland. They start Owusu(as I expected), Mikesell, Miller, Jones, and Charles.

Harper was an extremely risky hire. Remove the Tennessee tag, she isn't considered.

We will see soon enough, her coaching better be up to par as I haven't been impressed with her history as a recruiter.

All 12 players played double digit minutes which means Coach Harper experimented a ton with different lineups, etc...that didn’t happen last year. It was ugly, but I was encouraged with some things I saw. They still need work and look like the young team they are.
Last year, everyone played between 17-25 MPG. This year 10-22 MPG. Both experimented and both played everyone.

It was a weird game. In last year's game Evina had 8 assists and 4 steals. That's more assists than the entire team had in today's game (6).

Close to what I expected. With a new coaching staff. In a game like this. Tennessee used just a base package. Now there is some game film to go over. ETSU is a better team. Let's see what adjustments are made.

i thought tennessee looked awful, especially the post play. kk looked as if she had cement blocks on her feet. Rennia Davis played with the same lackadasical effort she had last season. Massengill looked totally ineffective, just like last season. Burrell had some good moments, but made an equal amount of boneheaded plays. The only real bright spot i saw was horston honestly. coach kelly just looked totally uninspired and tired.

ill have to adjust my expectations big time for this team and predict maybe 8-9 place finish in the sec. i think they lose to alabama again as well. they will be lucky to make the ncaa tournament.

That was a rough scrimmage for Tennessee. I noticed many on the Vols forum are blaming holly for tonight. It did sorta look like Holly 2.0 tonight though. Horrible offensive execution.

I will say, it was a really odd moment when the buzzer sounded. Rather than getting up to shake hands with the other team or greet her players, Harper just kinda sat there with a rather blank look on her face for several seconds, which I was inclined to read as "boy, do we have a lot of work to do" — or maybe that was just me projecting.

Haha I like how losing to Alabama has become an annual low water mark for this program. Let's hope it continues.

Kicking into mid-season shooting form pretty quickly I would say.
Good thing they can jump.

Saw Q1 and was not impressed at all and called it quits. Nothing but out jumping their over matched opponents physically.

and that was their best Q apparently.

Freshmen duo Haley Franks w/ 17 points, Blackwell with 16 points. They will be a fun duo to watch this year.

Off topic, I have really liked what I have seen from Faith Masonius for Maryland in the first two scrimmages. She isn't talked about as much with Diamond Miller and Owusu but I like her game a lot.

Stanford over Beijing Normal 100-58.

This link looks like it will always go to the latest game, but maybe you'll still be able to navigate to older games from it...

Seems Belebi will be a force. How long till she makes the starting lineup?

Given the fact that Dodson didn't dress for the game and Fingall is minutes-limited by the coaches while she continues to come back from ACL surgery, I wouldn't be surprised if Belibi functions as a starter (ie ends up playing more minutes than either Fingall or Dodson, even if Tara starts one or both of them on the basis of seniority). Based on one data point, I'm way, way more sanguine about having Jerome and Belibi as our post presences on the floor than I was even a month ago. Observers of that game said Jerome has transformed herself, and Tara has also been saying how improved she is. I'm hopeful Jerome is playing her way into the new score-anywhere Alanna Smith type post player for us, even if she never gets to Smith's All-American level of playing ability.

Maryland defeats Lincoln (Pa.) 115-52. For the second year in a row Maryland may have found a diamond in the rough. Last year it was Mikesell. This year Faith Masonius has been awesome thus far. She has played better than her two more heralded teammates and scored 21 points including a very impressive 15 points in the first half. It will be interesting to see how she does against more talented teams like South Carolina and NC State in the OOC schedule.
