@Butch posts from 1905. Hartford and Bridgeport are two of the richest cities in the world and Yale Football is the cat’s pajamas.
Dude, you have no idea how nasty Bridgeport used to be and what it is now. Just keep hiding in forests. And Hartford whenever you go there.

It's kind of amusing people can so willingly ignore that gentrification in Bridgeport is now a reality. Norwalk? Stamford? Manhattan? Norwalk is a crappy city compared to Bridgeport; was born there.

Hartford sucks pretty hard but it’s worse than Bridgeport? Does Bridgeport have 1/10th the white collar jobs that Hartford has? I lived in Fairfield for 5 years and don’t remember a singler person ever telling me they worked in Bridgeport outside of bartenders in Black Rock.
5 years? Impressive. I am a Fairfield native. You know Bridgeport is next to Fairfield, right? I only moved 1 mile from where I grew up.

Bridgeport has had trouble bringing in jobs but if it can manage to clean itself up, shouldn't be a big problem going forward. Housing and entertainment are being emphasized in redevelopment.

Super. There is one non-hospital employer.

Slag Hartford for a million reasons but give me a break on Bridgeport - at least there are jobs in Hartford.

You just wait... the casino will fix that and all else that ails the Park City.

That casino might not happen. I'd rather it not happen.

It's amusing you guys still think this city is in such horrible shape. You know it's not on the 100 most dangerous cities list anymore? A lot of work does have to be done on properties here and work has started.

There's actually people with white collar living in the city anyway. The jobs are just not centered in Bridgeport. Hartford will get gentrified, too. Same with New Haven. I am not slagging against other CT cities. But Bridgeport, with it's location, is prime for redevelopment right now.

Fascinating thread for me because not only was I born and raised in Hartford, but for most of my adult life until 15 years ago I worked on funding for apartments, both government rent subsidized and unsubsidized in all of CTs cities. I’ve been mostly out of the loop since then and am marginally aware of some of the newer places in Hartford. The older places that were aimed at younger people were what was at one time called Underwood Towers on Park near Sigourney, the Bushnell Apts and Condos on Main across from the Atheneum, apts at the corner of Main and Capital Ave (weird, with huge bathrooms and small master bedrooms), the Goodwin on Asylum and the lofts in the old Brown Thompson building near City Steam.

Hartford was really struggling then and Bridgeport was worse. Almost all of the big public housing projects have been long since demolished in all the cities. Bridgeport has big issues regarding replscng those units. Downtown Bridgeport was really dead. There was a guy in my office from Bridgeport and we used to tease each other on which city was better. We sat on a working group dealing with Bridgeport problems. In a big meeting one day, our director, after having us go over the problems we were working on, asked each of us what was good about the city. When it was my turn, I looked straight at my Bridgeport buddy and said “they have highway entrances”. He nearly fell off his chair. Bridgeport had one special downtown revitalization problem. It’s Main Street downtown was unusually narrow. They were also messed up for a few years by claims of land ownership by the minuscule Golden Hill Paugusset tribe which led to title problems.

Hiking up Talcott mountain now. I love it here. If u r a professional and want to live in the northeast. You just can't beat the Hartford area in terms of value and convenience

Providence and Norwalk have been been in the midst of yuppie galore for a while.
No doubt. My wife and I are both teachers and we have lucked out in finding a 1200 sq ft. home in Norwalk and even at that size we could barely afford it. We would venture out more Fairfield, Trumbull, Danbury, but that would make our commute intolerable. However, we've been here for two years now and love Norwalk!

Norwalk isn't that bad...some good qualities to it

Until someone brings a residential or mixed use development to Hartford (or Bridgeport ) without public funding, their development pipelines really should not be compared with Stamford or even New Haven. Hartford is dishing out serious coin for developers to build market rate apartments.

Sad fact. A lotta 40 year olds in the suburbs have no retirement or other savings. A scary amount of people who have no excuse.
What's your preferred measurement unit for an "amount" of people? Asking for a friend.
