I can’t believe this is what we have to work with at center for the entire season
Was pretty happy with Tarris yesterday. Foul trouble got him today. And Samson can still be a game changer off the bench with athletic plays. I am not sure he’ll ever be a 30 mpg guy, but we’ll see.

Couldn’t agree more. He’s not a kid with wiggle. Nice handle, not an explosive downhill kind of talent.
Again, his highlights show he has a lot of wiggle to his game which enables him to score in the lane. Of course he's not an explosive downhill player, Solo is explosive but he he's just a straight line driver, that's why he's struggling to score in the lane.

We weren't replacing Spencer, Clingan, Newton and Castle, without a substantial drop off. Any of those guys would be better than the guy who replaced them. We had multiple "go to" guys when we needed a bucket down the stretch last year. And with Cam running the show the right decision was inevitably made. We're not going to be as good as last year's team. But with gradual improvement we can be a top 10-15 level team by Feb-March. The biggest issue now is who is running the show and how can that guy make everyone around him better. Diarra is almost a "go to" guy but we need more answers. Ball seems close and Karaban needs to get himself there mentally. But at the top level everybody needs to step up because you can't have glaring weaknesses or mismatches mentally or physically at any position. Coaches figure that out quick.

Hope McNeeley is okay that freaky injury looked like it could tighten up on him overnight. Just don't want it to become a nagging one for the next few weeks. He's going to be a key guy as the season progresses. And yes the refs have been awful and totally inconsistent with phantom calls and whiffs on obvious fouls.

Mahaney was brought in to play PG after 2 years as a SG at Saint Mary’s. Hasn’t worked. Maybe it will by the end of the year, but this team can’t afford to wait. He simply has shown that he has no PG vision, court awareness.

Put him at his natural position, SG, backing up Solo. If he returns to his Saint Mary’s form at SG he’ll be a huge weapon off the bench.

Nowell is the best PG on the team, Hans down. With significant minutes he’ll only get better.

More importantly, he gives the impression that he has the ability to run last years offense and make everyone on the floor better than they are now. SJ might even have an impact with Nowell feeding him.

Read a few scouting reports. His game is being really fundamentally sound. He's not a mega athlete, not super explosive. Does a lot of things well, nice tall guard.

He’s also going to be playing against men next year, not high school kids. If I recall correctly you were overhyping current players against tomato cans. Close your eyes and imagine if he can do what he’s doing in that video against defenders 5 inches taller and 30lbs heavier ;).

I can't tell if this is all sarcasm or if you're serious.

Hurley has been talking about three-peating to anyone who would listen until they landed in Maui.

.500 team or worse.

You're talking about how it's going to take us a few recruiting cycles to rebuild.
What do you think he’s gonna say, ‘We are going to suck this year’? Come on. ‘Three-peat’ is fanboy fantasy.

Yes, multiple recruiting cycles.

Need a shifty guard through the portal as a top priority after this season. Watching this ISU/Dayton game right now and even Dayton's guard's look better than Diarra/Mahaney right now.

You keep repeating yourself. We all know he's not a mega athlete and not super explosive. I've said that over and over. He has wiggle to his game and scores in the lane. You seem to be really confused.

I've actually watched full games of his.

I think the staff was probably banking on Samson and Hasson making a huge leap on their 5th year. They could've gotten anyone they wanted for the C and PG spot from the portal. It looks like this was a huge miss sadly.

$10 million a year is to win championships, not to go on Good Morning America, do yoga interviews and scream at the refs like a toddler after losing to Colorado. Get it together Hurley.

Think about what Hurley cost this team with that technical. We steal that Memphis game and probably get to the final playing Michigan St. and either UNC or Auburn. Then you have a whole different feel to this team. They are feeling good and it sets a tone for the season. Instead, we walk out of Maui playing Memphis, Colorado, and likely Dayton with maybe 0 wins. We get nothing in the NET with those games. Clearly, the worst preseason tourney since the 2000 Maui when they lost to Dayton and left beating Chaminde and Louisville. One stupid mistake by an otherwise great coach could cost them their season.

I can’t say I’m surprised to be honest (so much so I’ve actually made money these past few days).

We really wasted a whole summer gearing an offense and handing the keys to a 6’3 175 pound combo guard that never played point, let alone run an offense this complicated.

Then our 6th year senior somehow has no concept of time and score and chucks a contested 3 point shot even though we’re down 1 point with 6 seconds left. That’s why we never wanted him to be a starter.

Like do we teach these guys skills outside of shooting 3s and how to run this overhyped offense seriously. We have completely lost the plot to what actually made us great these past two years and it’s worriesome that Hurley has misjudged this team and what actually made us so good these past two years.

Late to the thread again. The following has probably been mentioned:

Let me start with the good with a little needs improvement mixed in:

Ball has a nice 3 Pt stroke. Good to see he's not afraid to let em rip. He needs to continue to take 3s, but has to work on attacking the basket and finish more often and/or draw contact. Improved passing is needed as well.

McNeeley is the real deal. If he didn't miss time due to injury, we probably keep the momentum and win this game. He's just going to get better.

Nowell looks like one of the the two lead guards we need, with Mahaney taking on the Joey Cal role if he can figure out how to contribute and not be a liability. You could tell the moment looked a tad big for Nowell shooting wise, likely due to a lack of PT leading up to today.

Diarra made a lot of nice plays, but shouldn't be the player taking the last two shots with the game on the line. I do like that he wasn't afraid to take them, but try to look for a teammate as a first or second read. He's made some big late shots for us, but today didn't happen.

The not so good:

The team can't defend without fouling. This needs to be fixed. It's fixable and hope they figure it out sooner than later. Loosely related, can't wait till they play in front of BE refs where they normally let them play. Looks like perimeter breakdowns are leading to putting teammates in bad foul situations, though many fouls are simply on the ball ones.

Karaban has come up big in most of our games this season, but not today. If he had even an okay shooting day we win. He'll be fine this year, but we needed a few of his 3s to fall today to pull out the W.

Reed Jr looked great and was getting better each game, but no today. He couldn't stay on the floor. Teammates couldn't get him the ball when he was on the floor.

Johnson can't defend without fouling. Hope the staff can coach him up and he is able to learn. Lots of ball to be played, but little sign of him getting it. Though I'm not sure all of them were fouls, but many of the legit ones look avoidable. Maybe they need to tie one of his hands behind his back in practice to get through to him. He needs to show improved defense BBIQ. His lack of rebounds is often the result of trying to help out on D when at times he should be battling for solid defense rebounding position.

Ross, I still think he's going to be a special player, but it looks like the stage right now looks a tad too big for him. He's missing his 3s and doesn't seem to be as assertive attacking the basket. It will come, but he's further away than those who have seen his potential thought.

Stewart continues to look like a big game player. Hurley needs to continue to find him minutes and ways that maximize his abilities.

As noted above, coach up Mahaney in the Joey Cal mode for now, till he proves he deserves more PT than a few spot minutes. He continues to be a liability. Let's hope he figures it out and proves to his coaches that they made the right decision to bring him here.

In addition to taking 2 losses, they've squandered resume building opportunities by losing these first two games. I'm sure I'm speaking for everyone, but missing the opportunity to see them face a top 10 team is very disappointing.

Pretty sure we heard this same stuff about a kid from Bristol Central HS and everyone said he wouldn’t help out until his Jr year at best. How did that work out? Please stop with the negative thoughts on a kid who isn’t even here yet.

Board seems very dramatic- two tough losses by 3 points & people are acting like this ain’t a tournament team. Think this team will be just fine & at this point will surprise most of you how much they accomplish. In Hurley we trust- members please take your own advice over the years & trust in the process/Hurley.

I agree, we have become the villains.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous, UConn is such an easy team to root for. We aren't even P5 and are a testament to the fact that you don't need to be one of those schools to be successful. A win in the natty game for a school like Purdue wouldn't change much but it means everything for UConn

Go hate on a school like Kentucky, at least we aren't killing college athletics
In the end, it doesn't really matter what hate is generated against UConn except for how it may affect the refs. Dan does look like a psycho at times when Kimani has to restrain him. Late in the Colorado game it appeared that Dan wanted to get to the ref to fight. I love Dan but he needs to temper his behavior.

And currently, the team is not playing that beautiful basketball with numerous passes and cuts like they did last year. Far too much dribbling.

For now, I'm thinking:
1-Diarra 20 Nowell 10 Mahaney 10
2-Ball 30 Ross 10
3-McNeeley 30 Stewart 10
4-Karaban 30 Stewart 10
5-Reed, Jr 30 Samson 10
