Is it time we accept that we simply lost way too much talent from last year's team to be able to challenge for a three peat? I don't know what to think right now...
Yes. We aren’t winning every year and it’s time to realize the last 2 years were historically special. It’s not fair to expect this year’s team to pick up where last year’s team left off.

Not unexpected of course, but the amount of hate Hurley and UConn get online now is astounding. Across the board, from fans of other blue bloods to teams we’ve beat the last few years to conference opponents to randoms. The hate-envy is strong.

Totally get that Hurley is chaotic and divisive.
We all would hate Hurley if he didn't coach here.

Johnson is a fouling machine, but to be fair, our guards get beaten so often that he is constantly having to bail them out.

Once in a while but he creates his own fouls a lot more. Always reaching and today a real stupid over the back when he had 3 already and no chance to get the rebound. He’s just not very smart when it comes to staying out of foul trouble and it’s not changing at all.

I'm not ready to throw in the towel after 6 games but what is fluky about Maui? It's basketball, the gym and the island had nothing to do with guys fouling non-stop and leaving shooters open. When we've had good to great teams they've played up to their level out there.
Villanova the Battle 4 Atlantis last year and the sucked. That’s what is meant by fluky

Well he wasn’t in foul trouble and played 0 minutes in the 2nd half, so I guess that’s how? Seems like even you could have cracked that puzzle.

You can’t blame the loss on the guy that didn’t play.

Samson had 1 rebound and 10 fouls fouling out of both games in Maui. I don't even understand how that's possible for a 6'10 athletic freak with a 7'5 wingspan.
For some reason he only seems to notice and rush the ball when it in the hands of an opposing player going at the basket. Once it goes up, it's like it disappears for him.

I hate myself saying so to any kid but sadly it's between the ears. I think we have an excellent development program for big man, Sanogo/Clingan were dominant juggernauts in their own ways. Took Clingan a couple games in his Sophomore season to figure out how not to foul while blocking/rebounding at insane rate. To think Johnson has all the benefits of going against Clingan in practices but yet not learn the craft in 4 long years is baffling my mind...

At this point, it should be clear that Reed should be starting and Johnson is back to his backup role

I am not defending Johnson, just pointing out he is not the only problem on defense.

Complaints about the offense are bizarre. Our offense rocks.

It's the defense that blows.

I would like to have some dribble drive as well, it's hard to rely on just threes when you don't execute anything like we did last year.

Alex was a ghost today because his scoring package is still basically just threes.

Agree about the D. My main point was there’s still a dozen or more dudes in these threads complaining about “hoisting 3’s”. If the offensive set results in a wide open 3 from a 38%+ shooter, it’s a great possession. Not rocket science to figure this out.

So Alex took it to the hoop quite a bit in the last 2 games. Did it early in this one before foul trouble and got to the line.

I was very encouraged to see Solo drive with intention at least 3 times today.

We just need to clean up the defense (in a big way), and I think we’ll be back on track.

But it may take a half dozen or more games if it’s gonna happen.

I’m not sure if anyone has brought this up in the last two game threads because I’ve been skimming them…

Maybe it’s just as simple as we’re not a very good “morning game” team.

Nothing short of a pathetic showing here in Maui. We lost to the tougher team each game. Hurley goingnin the media and railing on the refs does 0 good, and he looks like a huge baby. Focus on getting your damn team ready to play defense, pass the ball and rebound the ball. They genuinely look like a team that doesn’t practice defense. We just lost to a mediocre team, yes, a mediocre team. There is not one player that should be proud of the way they played defense. Terrible basketball.

Nova went into Creighton's home gym and beat them after losing Philly Big 5 games, they were just all over the place early in the season, don't think the island or the venue had anything to do with it

We aren't 3 peating. That needs to be dropped now for all our sanity. It is now about team and individual improvement to make the Tourney and play well.

Exact same chance of 3-peaking today as there was Sunday.

There’s a crowd that always laughs at the need for a true pg, but we need it. Yes, we figured it out with Newton, but we also had a ridiculous front court and Newton is clutch as hell. This team will need a guy to create for others and make plays out of nothing. It seems like Nowell may need to find his place on this team and drive the bus. We seem a little bit rudderless right now.

Maybe his lack of rebounds is because of his not securing the ball with both his hands, or getting it stripped or just being pushed out of position by stronger opposing players when under the basket.

He doesn't have great hands.

I never paid attention to why the miniscule rebounding, but if the above factors are causing it, then there is the answer.

He contests every shot so he's out of position for the rebound. His hands are terrible when it comes to rebounding (there was one rebound yesterday that bounced off his hands and pinballed around the paint for a bit). Which is ironic because he catches every lob thrown his way. And he's too slender to box out guys who have 40+ lbs on him.

We have no shot blocking ability from the 5 spot. None. Hopefully Hurley has learned that when Samson and Reed get 2 first half fouls he should play Singare so that Samson and Reed do not get a 3rd foul before the half. If Clingan was still here we could say 3 peat. He's gone.

That’s what I kept saying- “how many times in a row is he going to miss from 30 feet?” After you miss a few, try driving to the hoop or at least shooting closer to the basket.
I agree with your take, but good shooters think if they keep shooting, they will revert to the mean. In his case, the mean is for made 3 pointers.

I think Hurley used to tell Jordan Hawkins to keep shooting. Not sure Hurley said the same to Alex.
