Colorado Post Game Thread

Darius is a 6’5” kid. Has a great handle for his size but doesn’t have that kind of quickness, stop and go, shiftiness with the ball. More of a long strider.
He does though from what I've seen.

Long strider? Rip was a cross country runner and he's one of the best lane scorers we've ever had.

He doesn’t from what i’ve seen. Watched a lot of highlights when it looked like we were getting him. Outside shot maker but really didn’t see much on ball creation. Agree to disagree.

I think Hurley probably knew sometime this Summer that this team had a LOT of holes. But the ingredients were set so he had to make the best of it.

The earlier you got knocked out of the tournament this year, the earlier you could get going in portal recruiting. We had to wait until pretty much the end of April/beginning of May when most of the good players were gone. Mahaney was clearly a complete and total misapprehension of talent, probably Hurley's worst coaching UCONN. I wonder what they saw in him, maybe a slightly lesser Spencer?

Whatever, he's pretty much a waste of a roster spot at this point. I would not be surprised if he leaves the team at some point and goes back into the portal if for no other reason than to avoid further humiliation once the Big East schedule gets moving. He should have stayed in the WCC, low major is his best home.

I want to give these guys time to cook but the more and more I watch the less confident I am that we're gonna avoid a double digit loss season. Feels like a .500 team or worse. And at this point it's tough to see how we're gonna beat St. John's, Marquette, etc. Hell we might lose to Providence which would be intollerable.

Come to think of it, this is not dissimilar to what happened to Donovan's post-repeat teams at Florida. Took them a few recruiting cycles to rebuild during which they were mediocre to just OK.
Hey stay away from the ledge. It isn't as bad a you put. We still have the offensive talent to be good with Karaban, Ball and McNeeley. It is just that we have to fast forward Nowell's devlopment. We all thought Mahaney would be good or at least adequate. I'm sure he will still have some moments. The kid needs to eat and hit the gym big time. Not sure what he was thinking coming in looking like Howdy Doody. I still think he can contribute and be a key cog off the bench. We will be above .500 team and make the tournament. I don't see a final four team right now but season is still long.

I don’t get it. Why do you shoot a 3 down 1 with 5s to go? Drive the damn ball and take the bucket, foul, or hopefully rebound - if the ball gets stripped you live with it but a 3? There is like no upside to that.
To be honest, when the first option wasn’t there (back door to Liam), the next option was a ball screen from Stewart and I’m just not sure that was going to lead anywhere if CU was in a switch everything mode with only 5 seconds left. Shooting a 3 then at least gave us a chance at a putback.

Funny thing is, all last night, BY regulars slamming anyone not part of your clique for commenting on the OT loss. You guys are 13 pages in and still hyperventilating and crashing the board over this one. They actually played a better game today. There's a really good team in there somewhere. Alumni and long term donor.

I can't tell if this is all sarcasm or if you're serious.

Hurley has been talking about three-peating to anyone who would listen until they landed in Maui.

.500 team or worse.

You're talking about how it's going to take us a few recruiting cycles to rebuild.

Again, the main thing from a lot of those highlights and others i’ve watched is his knockdown shooting. That’s why his scouting report often reads as such.

I know your thoughts on it you know mine. We can agree to disagree! Cool?

The highlights show over and over him doing all the things you say he doesn't do. Lolz

We aren't 3 peating. That needs to be dropped now for all our sanity. It is now about team and individual improvement to make the Tourney and play well.
Let's hope we can make another run in 2026

Doesn’t do a ton. You’re exaggerating my words, it isn’t his strength, maybe it becomes his strength. Again, let’s agree to disagree.

Hurley needs to go back to the Lab.
He really tried to fix his CYO yelling at the refs all game last year and he has reverted backwards. Bad look for a 2 time national champion

We looked at Mahaney a lot - an awful lot -when we played them in the NCAAs. We knew what we were getting. He’s definitely better than what he’s shown, but maybe be needs things to be simplified for a bit and not worry about the whole offense and making reads. Just come off screens and shoot … or look for one read/one pass and keep the ball moving and not having it stick to his hands. And then when he has a better feel for his teammates, our system and what we are doing out there, he can have the ball move.

This team has a lot of holes but it is November. Give the coaching staff a chance and the new guys an opportunity,
A solid 4-6 seed that can make a run is awesome after 2 nattys back to back.

Doomsday approach

Healthy approach here is to take this season slow, reduce expectations dramatically and just enjoy watching it come together.

I really think if Hurley can scrape off the loose parts of the rotation, allow top 8 to build chemistry, good things can still happen. Liam, Solo, Ahmad and Stew still have lots of room to improve.

Couldn’t agree more. He’s not a kid with wiggle. Nice handle, not an explosive downhill kind of talent.

I can’t believe this is what we have to work with at center for the entire season

This loss is a lot worse than Memphis loss. Memphis has better players with great size and athleticism, put us in a deep hole, only to have UConn claw back and almost win. Except for the great shooting of the opposing team, the game against Colorado seemed different- UConn had the better players (I think), UConn had the lead for most of the game, but never imposed themselves to take the win. Like many others have noted already, 1) UConn can’t defend well, and 2) UConn gets into foul trouble too frequently, and 3) the other team gets to the line a lot more.

We need more defense. Especially on the perimeter. Uncontested threes giving our opponents absurd percentages If Abraham is as good a defender as we have heard we are going to have to get him and Nowell more minutes. With few exceptions we do not look very athletic out there.

Was pretty happy with Tarris yesterday. Foul trouble got him today. And Samson can still be a game changer off the bench with athletic plays. I am not sure he’ll ever be a 30 mpg guy, but we’ll see.

Again, his highlights show he has a lot of wiggle to his game which enables him to score in the lane. Of course he's not an explosive downhill player, Solo is explosive but he he's just a straight line driver, that's why he's struggling to score in the lane.

We weren't replacing Spencer, Clingan, Newton and Castle, without a substantial drop off. Any of those guys would be better than the guy who replaced them. We had multiple "go to" guys when we needed a bucket down the stretch last year. And with Cam running the show the right decision was inevitably made. We're not going to be as good as last year's team. But with gradual improvement we can be a top 10-15 level team by Feb-March. The biggest issue now is who is running the show and how can that guy make everyone around him better. Diarra is almost a "go to" guy but we need more answers. Ball seems close and Karaban needs to get himself there mentally. But at the top level everybody needs to step up because you can't have glaring weaknesses or mismatches mentally or physically at any position. Coaches figure that out quick.

Hope McNeeley is okay that freaky injury looked like it could tighten up on him overnight. Just don't want it to become a nagging one for the next few weeks. He's going to be a key guy as the season progresses. And yes the refs have been awful and totally inconsistent with phantom calls and whiffs on obvious fouls.

Mahaney was brought in to play PG after 2 years as a SG at Saint Mary’s. Hasn’t worked. Maybe it will by the end of the year, but this team can’t afford to wait. He simply has shown that he has no PG vision, court awareness.

Put him at his natural position, SG, backing up Solo. If he returns to his Saint Mary’s form at SG he’ll be a huge weapon off the bench.

Nowell is the best PG on the team, Hans down. With significant minutes he’ll only get better.

More importantly, he gives the impression that he has the ability to run last years offense and make everyone on the floor better than they are now. SJ might even have an impact with Nowell feeding him.

Hope we never go back to Maui
You may get your wish.

Read a few scouting reports. His game is being really fundamentally sound. He's not a mega athlete, not super explosive. Does a lot of things well, nice tall guard.

He’s also going to be playing against men next year, not high school kids. If I recall correctly you were overhyping current players against tomato cans. Close your eyes and imagine if he can do what he’s doing in that video against defenders 5 inches taller and 30lbs heavier ;).

What do you think he’s gonna say, ‘We are going to suck this year’? Come on. ‘Three-peat’ is fanboy fantasy.

Yes, multiple recruiting cycles.

Need a shifty guard through the portal as a top priority after this season. Watching this ISU/Dayton game right now and even Dayton's guard's look better than Diarra/Mahaney right now.

You keep repeating yourself. We all know he's not a mega athlete and not super explosive. I've said that over and over. He has wiggle to his game and scores in the lane. You seem to be really confused.

I've actually watched full games of his.
