BYU Post Game Thread

We have a tendency to slow down the offense with a double digit lead. Need to break that habit as it seems to get everyone out of rhythm

That's just Hurley's coaching and playing the numbers game.

Fouls:

BYU - 22
UConn - 21

I don't have an issue with the refs but foul totals are more:
BYU - 19 + three fouls in the last thirty seconds to extend the game
UConn - 21

A tough game to watch in the 2nd half.

BYU took advantage of the officiating and dwindled our lead by slowing the ball down, driving the ball, and drawing fouls.

I think the refs would have done the same for us, but our offense is clearly a set offense with lots of cutting/screening that doesn't draw as many fouls.

The J.Stewart experiment should be over.

Ross came up much bigger tonight.

I was going to give Stewart a lot of credit for some good defense in the 1st half, but clearly Dybantsa was not that engaged in that half.

Not to say we have anybody that could slow Dybantsa the 2nd half, but Stewart didn't contribute anything the 2nd half, other than a easy dunk.

If you're getting toasted on D, at least get some buckets to offset that.

Getting Mullins back will help a great deal.
J. Stewart was actually better than Ross against AJ especially in the first half. Stewart though was horrible on offense and sloppy with the ball. He really needs to clean that up. I think we will need both so I wouldn't same we should stop believing. He can explode on offense. I will say once Mullins comes back it will give us more diversity but having both Stewart and Ross involved helps on D. I think Mullins will help when Ball is cold. Playing Demary and Smith wasn't as effective as I though. Demary was the man but Smith was awful. Smith looks like he kind of lost out there and not sure what to do with the ball. Him stepping out out of bounds on a wide open 3 epitomes his game. Karaban is deadly frm 3 when hot but clearly isn't the go to guy. The thing that really got me annoyed was in the 2nd half with a clear advantage inside with no Keita for BYU we forgot about Reed and didn't really run any plays for him. That was a huge mistake.

Their motion offense is not being executed quickly most of the time. There were some nice sets but more that didn't give them an advantage. More work is needed.
I’ve noticed we’ve struggled the last two years getting into our offense after a somewhat effective press. The good news is only a few teams have the athletes to press us without it turning into a layup line but something to keep an eye on maybe.

The starting 5 of AK, Tarris, SD, Solo and Mullens has to be the most firepower in college. The first half defense has nice and I think where we can get to with this group. We found out tonight that Silas is a championship PG. By far the most important result other than the win.

It's hard to describe our three year players. There's not a complete player among them, and that is frustrating. You just hope Solo puts it all together, Ross continues to improve and flash, and JStew I'm not sure about...I'm not sure if we are going to get any more than what he's shown at this point.
Stewart is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma

Jayden Ross played well but fouled out in 12 minutes … 5 fouls 12 minutes .. WTF
He is kind of too itchy on defense still and he is a string bean. That is why it is good to have both him and Stewart available. I will say it is nice that Ross's outside has improved without the herky jerky movement of last year. He seems to be taking more time and it looks a lot better instead of going long every shot like last year.

Malachi was disappointing this game, a lot of boneheaded mistakes. We shrunk the squad down to 8 for this game. No Millender or Koroma.

Solo needs to play better, IMO, it's early but he has been disappointing so far this season.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ross starts over Stewart from here on out until Mullins is back. Ross outplayed him.

Karaban and Reed were great.

Silas was a DOG. Huge shots late in the game. That little step back with like 90 seconds left was a thing of beauty.

Did Tarris look dinged up a bit with his ankle/foot from the fall he had under the basket?
The announcer said it looked like it was his tailbone. He did appear a bit hobbled the rest of the way, but credit to Tarris for gutting it out. You could see there was no way he was leaving that game. Hopefully he'll be fine for Wednesday night.

BYU decided to pressure us in the backcourt and knew we suck at inbounding also. It disrupted us on offense as well. Sure BYU got away with elbow push offs on their drives but they heated up as we went cold. Stew threw the ball away twice in our half court offense which hurt. Smith stepping OOB before catching a pass. We got flustered on offense looked like the main issue to me. Thank Silas for making the big free throws late.

If it's his tailbone he'll be sore tomorrow.

Umm so what happened I'll just pretend that 2nd half didn't just happen. Move on and take the win and get better from it take lessons onto Arizona.

On offense for sure but defense I thought Stewart was better. It is good to have both of them and I dont think it matters who starts. They are both keeping the seat warm until Mullins comes back. Mullins will eventually start there and these guys will both be backups.
