Big East OOC thread '25/'26

From scrolling through Twitter it seems like an effort/defense thing

Can we now remove Creighton off the list of potential tournament teams? The team is just not that good. Now based on playing today Seton Hall has improved their odds significantly to make the tournament.

Yeah they do - shockingly. Newark will be a problem.
From what I saw that was more about Seton Hall than NC State. They were just quicker to the ball all over the court on defense and offense. Budd Clark is crazy quick and there was impressive speed all over the court for them.

St John’s’ press is starting to fluster Iowa St.

They’ve caused a few turnovers and have come back from a double digit deficit. Just took the lead on a Hopkins layup

32-31 with 5 minutes left in the first half

Yeah Seton Hall doesn't look bad. Looking at this game, I miss being in Maui last year even though UConn was the biggest loser there.

Newark has been the #1 house of horror for UConn and it looks like it won't be easier this year. You and me both saw UConn's worst losses last year metrics wise last year in person to Colorado in Maui and Seton Hall in Newark.

Wow Seton Hall is the first unranked team to win this year over a ranked team. It was 96-0 before. Congrats to Seton Hall. Seems like some teams we thought werent going to be good are pretty decent.
It always works out like that. Even when people on the BoneYard suggest a certain Big East team(s) will be bad based on early OOC games, I don't make too many comments because teams get better as the year goes along and that is even more true with the bigger roster turnover in the transfer portal era.

No, Creighton is definitely not a lock anymore like I thought but they're firmly on the bubble and I still think they'll get in. And Seton Hall is nowhere near a tournament team, even if they're much improved and will give teams a tough game

There is so much year to year volatility that it is hard to tell. The only hot takes I feel confident about with today’s games are that the Big East doesn’t suck as bad as the first week made it seem, and Seton Hall knows defense.

St. Johns is a lot more talented than Iowa State, and Iowa State is up 2. Rotisserie teams are hard to win with in basketball.

SjU doesn't seem like a good defensive team leaving perimeter shooters. They are also turning it over on offense. Down 59 to 53 now.

It's how they looked out of conference last season too. It's sucks for us and the conference because you know they will look awesome during the Big East season once again.
Then underperformed outside the conference in the NCAA tournament.

What a horrible call on Darling and now another horrible call to give Iowa State free throws when St. John's has all the momentum.

Iowa State is very good, but it's amazing how much better St. John's looks with a real PG: Idaho State transfer Dylan Darling. He's good, but is he good enough at this level? Is any St. John's guard good enough to run the offense at this level? IMO, if they replaced one of Sellers/Sanon/Jackson with a true PG, this team would have true title aspirations. Without that, I don't see it.

What made them so dominant in conference last season was they had an identity. And they leaned all the way into it. Their roster was also perfectly designed for it.

This season is very different in my opinion.

Still hope they can pull this one out.

so is St Johns going to a redux of last year, lose all of their big non-conf matchups but feast on the big east

Some god awful closing possessions by StJ. Absolutely gross. I’m not impressed at all by Jackson. He’s just a wild player, totally unrefined.
