Big 12

It doesn't help that when word got out that the Big 12 was considering us, there were a bunch of articles and comments from supposed UConn fans about how we wouldn't want to go to the Big 12 and should hang out with a bunch of small private basketball schools instead.
Even a State Congressional representative was opposed to the Big 12 and commented pro Big East. Very bad look from small minded congressman.

Utah has a smaller population than CT. Another place with multiple teams set for the future.
Demographics have changed.

In 1990, Utah had half of the population of Connecticut and now the populations are close to equal. And, from 2010 to 2020, Utah was the fastest growing state.

In 1990, South Carolina and Connecticut had about equal populations. Today, there are about 50% more people in South Carolina.

Could be nothing, but my son is friends with a person connected with the WBB program who said there are Big 12 rumblings again. We've been down this road so many times, I am highly skeptical, but just passing along what I heard...

We've never seem to be at a loss for rumblings, and yet lightning never seems to strike.

Thanks for passing along what you heard!

The rumblings have been going on for two months. The problem is that no one would expand with a school like UConn right this moment. There may be some bigger fish available from a football perspective (FSU, Clemson, UNC, UVA, Miami, NCST).

Adding us would be sensible if the B12 is trying to fire a kill shot at the ACC, but that’s about the only reason to take us right now.

I really hope that you all get that invite. I hope the Big12 isn’t “rumbling” to out pressure on the ACC schools to push for a settlement saying there are only so many spots available. If UConn gets one, that’s one less for an ACC school to grab. You are more deserving of that spot than 3/4 of the ACC.

I heard that at this point it's closer to a buzz than a rumbling.

UConn needs to keep everything well under wraps for a few reasons. First, obviously is it isn’t a deal until it’s a deal. No sense making noise unless and until there is a real deal. No sense getting everyone excited if there is no deal coming. 2nd, if we are going to the B12 or anyplace really, the deal needs to be kept under wraps because the minute it gets out there will be an intense lobbying effort to save the New Big East among some people who should know better. They will be aided and abetted by the New Big East who knows without the Huskies they are worth about 50% less in the market.

Dave seemed to have kept everything under wraps when moving to the NBE. IIRC the process started in 2017, and the news hit quick in 2019...

@UCMB88 did you hear about this prior to the Zanetto podcast?

I talked to a guy. pretty big donor not so connected but also said he is hearing possible Big 12 move. I asked where he heard it. He said. The Boneyard:(
The power of the Yard, I'm sure we could influence the upcoming Presidential election if we cared to

A self fufilling prophecy.. Maybe
The reality is this could happen as the financials are now doable
The thing that always doomed us was we simply didn’t make sense as a ROI.
The thing‘s that changed is the New Big East Contract on a network with less viewers , as the second banana conference . That contract overall worth is really heavily weighted to the top end schools .
Plus the rise of women’s basketball with a following whose bigger games rival most men’s team
If I were looking at UConn from the B1G or B12. where our basketball value would easily be in the $20,000,000 areas taking a gamble on the rebirth of football is less risky as it’s a throw in .
If we got 1/3 share in the B1G
or 3/4 of the Big 12 is game on
We come with very little downside risk
I’m not predicting anything but the case I could make if I were consulting a conference is much stronger than a year ago . Since money and the Networks call the shots who knows

Everybody should just keep talking about it like it's a done deal. Maybe we can collectively speak it into existence.

I didn't hear anything about a B12 move. But there's a lot of buzz about a move to the B1G. You heard it there first.
