I may be old school but for me the real test of greatness is how the pie taste with few or no toppings. Dough, sauce, and cheese for the most part. I'll take Sally's for that. For a specialty pie I'll take the original White clam at Pepe's.

Went to Lenas First and Last in West Hartford on Park Road a couple nights ago. Real good pizza, grinders and dinners too.

Visiting Cheshire tonight. Had Rossini's. Their sausage pizza is outstanding, as good as I ever remember it.

Went there for the first time on the day after you, and was instantly jealous of the next table when I saw their sausage & broccoli rabe pie. Uncharacteristically, we ordered clams casino, which was OK enough, though much much better the next day out of the toaster oven. Went with someone who had lived in Cheshire and definitely would return there, where her friends still live.

Haven't read through the whole thread but, to me Rossini's is the sleeper of the New Haven scene. Grew up around the corner from them and Pops. Two very different but outstanding joints.

The white broccoli and meatball from Rossini's is the best pie I've ever had. Pops makes great Sicilian and calzones.

I actually have a question about Pepe's and Sally's -- can you actually call ahead and pick it up rather than wait in line? Or is the line non-optional?

They cook their tomatoes all day long. And we ordered a straight-up mozz, and the tomato sauce was fresh, used fresh tomoatoes, and it made all the difference.
Ran into my friend who is a manager at Pepe's in New Haven. He confirmed that they make the sauce from canned tomatoes. He even told me who they buy them from, but swore me to secrecy. He also confirmed that they use fresh tomatoes only for the summer seasonal pies.

Oh well, that might explain it. I stopped by in summer, and had fresh tomatoes. In this very thread, I said I went there over Xmas and the pie just wasn't the same.

Pepes pizza with anchovies. May be disgusting to some, but for the true fans out there, true bliss.

Years ago my buddy had an apartment just down the block from Pepe's, we called ahead and got it to go all the time.

Wow, a Stella's mention. That was a heavy but tasty pizza when you were craving it.

If you liked that, a far superior pizza is Italian Villa in Somers. A very unique tasting and delicious pie. The best New England style pizza there is IMO. I am a New York and Neapolitan pizza fan but if I have to do New England style, that is the best. I used to drive 40 minutes for it every 2 weeks or so.

I work in Rocky Hill, we've done Wethersfield grinder and occasionally Franklin Grinder.

But not as much lately. Good stuff.

My last meal by a mile would be a full fried seafood platter w/whole bellies from Lenny & Joe's.

Nice work. I didn't realize they did a clams casino. Next time you make the trip I highly recommend their sausage pie. As good as it is fresh, I think it is better the next morning.

I usually stick to the football boards, but this OT caught my eye. Apologies if these have already been mentioned. So many great pizza joints in CT that living anywhere else is a disappointment.

Early childhood pizza experience- Madison Pizza on Rte 1 near the Guilford line. It was in a little grey house across the street from the Hob-Nob (my Grandma's favorite restaurant). Both long-gone I'm sure. Anybody remember them? I can still remember poking holes in the cheese with a fork to let the heat out so it wouldn't burn my mouth. Started my love affair with pizza.

Torrington- lotsa good pies to be had there. Favs are Nicholas Pizza on Water St, Pizza Palace on East Main (also good chef salads and anti-pasto) and possibly the winner, The Berkshire on Albert St.

Shout-outs:

Hometown Pizza Harwinton. good thin crust, especially their Italian Flag pizza. Fresh mozz, sun-dried tomatoes and broccoli. YUM.

Georges (?) Pizza Unionville.

A place, now closed probably for 10-15 years that was on Main st in East Hartford. Classic pizza with lotsa cornmeal. Can't for the life of me remember the name. Help?

FYI the best pizza in Rio de Janeiro is the one I make in my house. The pizza here SUCKS.
