Went to Modern last night got the marg and a cheese, margarita was great. It was different than most marg pizzas I've had, it looked exactly the same as the cheese but was way better. I went on a wed night at 8 so the place was dead. I've been to all the big 3 but my gf hasn't so I'm gonna take her to each one and let her decide which she likes best. Last time i was at Sally's the waiter was SO bad it actually made the experience better. We spent the entire time just chatting about how much of a dick he was. I tipped 35% just for that reason.

My last trip to Sally's (4 years ago) 'featured' a wait in the booth closest to the ovens that was so long as to have a similar effect. Every pizza that went by us heightened the experience (perhaps even produced an altered state). I knew there was no chance that my companion would ever want to return, but we both agreed the pizza was outstanding, and I could say, "Yeah, that's part of coming here."

My best and strongest Sally's memories are from 30+ years ago, when it was, "Bacon at Sally's, white clam at Pepe's, and The Spot will suffice if the lines are so long that the others in my party will get restless." Once I was gone from CT and thereafter discovered on rare days when I was passing through New Haven that Modern could make a pizza so tasty that I'd tip a take-out box like a diamond just to collect and eat the blackened crumbs at the end, I never went to Wooster street again until that trip to Sally's.

Tomorrow night, we'll be doing Modern takeout, eating at gf's in Westville and going to a Bob Dylan words and music show at Lyric Hall. The other couple has only had Fairfield Pepe's, where I have had 70-30 good, but nothing close to transcendent.

Now that I'm back to New Haven and have the proper company, I know we'll stand in line for both Pepe's & Sally's when the weather warms a bit, and I'll be able to send an update the next time this topic reappears. I'd like to get back to Zupardi's and Bar with her as well, plus so many suggested others that I have and haven't been to.

Anyone from West Haven? I know Zuppardi's keeps coming up, but I grew up on Tom and Pat's, and it's always been one of my favorites.

Where is the best pizza east of the river? I've lived in the Manchester-South Windsor area for years and have yet to find a place that has outstanding pizza. With that said, I do like New England Pizza's eggplant pizza. It's just not the New York style that I like most. Oh, and the Pepe's by the mall was expensive and unimpressive.

I must say upfront that I don't get pizza all that much these days. But we actually had one delivered from Campions (NY style) in S. Windsor last night that was pretty good. Teddy's is a solid Greek pizza that is always good. Mulberry St. (NY) in Manchester has a good rep but I haven't picked up one from them since they (and I) moved a few years back.

I like Willington Pizza, but I grew up in Coventry, so I might not have very high standards.
My girlfriend in college was from Coventry and we had willington pizza at her folks house every Sunday night. Maybe not the best pizza but it sure brings back some great memories.

After 24 pages of pizza, some of you must have gained 25 lbs, held in check only thru a roaring case of the sh!its.

Seriously, a 24-page thread about pizza? I must be missing out living in Florida. This same thread would elicit three responses here.

Try Rosedale Pizza in Naples FL if ever in the area. It is the equal of any pizza in the world. Outstanding Neapolitan style in a wood burning brick oven. Recipe and process is direct from Italy, owners are from Queens. I can't find a better pizza anywhere and I've certainly tried. They are opening one on the east coast of FL soon around Miami/Ft Lauderdale.

Pizza house in New Haven. That place will never go out of business . I found out the difference between an Italian style pizza and a Greek style pizza. They make a Greek style pizza which has a lighter , crunchy crust kinda like buttered toast.

If you are ever in Stratford give Paradise Pizza a try. Greek Pizza that is delicious and been there like 60 years.

One that I'm not sure was mentioned is Berkshire Pub in Torrington........owner changes have taken it back a bit but still a formidable pie and order the salad for 2 as they have a real nice house dressing along with a filling assortment including ham, pepperoni and fresh mozz..........

Was in the Middletown area with one of my sales guys and at lunch we went to Mondo..........had to after some of the posts here.

Very good pie, thin and very well done almost to the point of being a bit too crispy if that can be........but really great taste and love the charred crust!! it's up there

Mondo is excellent. The owner, Kurt, also owns Naples Pizza in Farmington and he is a UConn alum.

Went to modern last Sunday and the pizza was awful. I ordered a margarita and it was barely even cooked. You couldn't eat it without all the cheese and sauce just falling off when you picked it up. I ended up eating dough with cheese/sauce on the side. My first bad experience in new haven pizza.

Park Lane Pizza in West Hartford is a good example, I think Luna's trends more towards the greek style also.
I lived around the corner from Park Lane and wouldn't go there. Their pizza is plain awful and typical Greek pizza with overcooked sauce. Joey's next door is better. I would make the trek down Park to Lena's; not my favorite but pretty good.
Pizza reviews are all over the place like peoples tastes. Some of my favorites were/are: Popular Rest in Southington (closed), Ginos in Glastonbury (closed), Pagliaccis in Plainville, Vitos in Wethersfield, Portland Restauant in Portland.Oh and Gozzo's on Blue Hills in Hartford (closed for about 40 years).

Used to live in area. Favorite at time was Anthony's. Is it still around?

Ginos in Glastonbury (closed),

I read they raised the rent so they called it a day and Harry's (Barb branch) moved in. You probably know that Gino's was related to Proccacini's in E. Htfd that is still open. I haven't been there for awhile, I always liked how they put the mozz over the pepperoni. BTW, we had a pie from Frank Pepe's in Manchester yesterday and it was better than any I've had in the area for a long time.

Gino's in Glastonbury wasn't very good. There were at least 5 better options in Glastonbury including Angelo's. Giovanni's, and Luna. Tried Harry's in Glastonbury the other night. It was very good.
