This is the NOTRE DAME problem.
They want to PLAY National Name Brands. It's important to them. But, as conference play gets in swing; they are left with lesser name opponents. That was one of the prime reasons given for why ND wanted to be in the ACC. No more Tulsa or Western Michigan on the schedule. Games in the latter part of the season that are interesting.
The numbers? BYU is outside the Big5 & deserves a good sized number. I don't think they will be in the B12.
A couple of things, Pudge:
1) Although I agree that it may have been part of the motivation for ND, ND has never had a problem getting others (even in the big conferences) to change their schedules to accomodate for late-season games. BYU is a different story. ND's move seems to me to be clearly trying to leverage the big bowl payout situations and bowl game tie ins, not to mention the playoff ramifications that will follow.
2) It had been reported that the Big12 had tried to get BYU to join them in the past, but ran into the same problems that the Big East ran into; namely the tv deal situation.
I don't know how long BYU can stay on the outside looking in, but I hope that they decide to join up with the NBE, and sooner rather than later. They are a good brand name with a good football team, and it would add money to the new contract.
