2024 WNBA Season: Part 2 (August ---)

3-1 in August and after tonight's game against CC and company end the month on the road against The Storm and The Aces.

Like the Sky, the Dream are three and seven over their last 10 and not a very good road team. As these two stagger to the finish to see who gets to play the number one seed (the Liberty on most dance cards LOL) these games will only be interesting to demonstrate who is more motivated.

As the playoff order with the exception of the number eight slot is already set one wonders who's looking ahead, who's resting starters, and who might be playing for their next contract.

One might quibble about where the Sun and Lynx end up and who plays the Fever and who plays the Mercury but in the end it really won't matter as the higher seeds will advance. The Fever don't have the defense to hang with any of the top 4 teams ( and maybe not even the Dream tonight) and the Mercury will fall merely because of their ineptitude on the road.

My point focused on the team after the Olympic break not before. The team definitely operates differently now with Canada running the point and Hillmon in as a starter.

Play-offs are not something I'm concerned about when it comes to the Dream. If they make it, that's a bonus considering how the first half of the season went.

Sad that we have to have these conversations, but these are the conversations that must be had, especially when you have the non-causal fan or the casual fan throwing out random comments. Rather than applaud or give Angel praise for her elite rebounding skill, she gets criticized for rebounding. Nobody gave one of the games elite rebounders and iconic players, Yolanda Griffith, static when she was crushing the offensive glass to the tune of 168 back in early 2000s. Same with Tina Charles or Rebekkah Brunson. Nobody ever made the claim that those legends were "padding" their rebounding numbers. Those ladies were given praise about their effort and desire. The same should be said for Angel. She works her butt off on those rebounds.

I think we probably read the same report. I was reading the Sporting News report where the writer compared Angel's numbers to Clint Carela, Nikola Jokic, and a few other NBA players & WNBA players who are decent offensive rebounders and Angel's numbers were 0.1%-0.4% behind or on par with those players. Angel is just being judged by a different standard and it is sad and annoying.
It's not only casual fans. Just heard Frank Isola of ESPN on Around the Horn stating that Angel's rebound numbers would be lower if she made more of her shots. The problem isn't solely due to fans who aren't knowledgeable about the game. Even experienced media pundits are guilty for not doing their own research.

I mean, that's true. The key thing is not "meaningfully lower" insofar as she would still lead the league in rebounds.

I think what people are reacting to at a high level is the visceral ugh feeling when someone gets three of their own missed shots before drawing a foul on the fourth (missed) shot on the play. No matter how amazing a big's rebounding skills are, that's the kind of play you just want to look away from...

Yikes! That is just lazy reporting. Folks like Isola do a huge disservice to sports. I did not watch Around the Horn so I am guessing that he did not show any data to back up his claim that Angel's rebound numbers would be lower if she made more of her shots. He does realize that out of her 152 offensive rebounds, 64 come from her own misses, which means she is, I am no math whiz but, getting 88 offensive rebounds from her teammates missed shots, and we know Chicago Sky can't shoot that well.

Angel is just a heck of a rebounder. You would think that folks would be praising her rebounding effort. When we all know that a lot of players don't like to rebound, especially offensive rebounds. A lot players don't follow their shots. Angel just follows her shot and those of her teammate's shots. She has great body positioning for rebounds. Angel has a that gift for rebounding and folks are trying to criticize her for it.

Indiana was up big, Atlanta made a run, but Fever held on.

Boston caught somebody with a nasty elbow, I think it was Gray. No way to treat a fellow alum.

Dang it @cancontent , maybe I did jinx the Dream.

Nah, in this case Atlanta owns full responsibility for this loss.

They fell back into their "What the???" offence instead of the ball movement and work the paint style that had been working for them. For a while I thought they gave up and were mailing it in.

Indiana was hot shooting and without looking at tie boxscore, I think they won the rebounding game. Howard and Gray, prior to her taking that elbow struggled to score. Maybe, we can blame you for we can blame you for that (;)). From my perspective though, they seemed a tad more worked up for this game than they usually are.

And that's totally fair. It isn't pretty but it doesn't mean context can't be provided to help explain her stats.

The media talk about a lot things that "aren't pretty but it works" when it comes to successful offences or defences, regardless of sport. Rhetorical question, but can't the same treatment be applied here? Sports fans, even casual ones, would understand.

Why? I actually love plays like that. It shows resilience, tenacity, fight and determination and aggression. That real hoops to me and more exciting that an easy lay-up. If it ends with 2, who cares how many misses it takes to get there? Obviously not everyone has to like the same things but people act like the way Angel plays is completely unenjoyable for everyone when its just a personal preference.

I also think people are reacting to more than just finding 1-2 possessions per game this happens on.

Can the Fever catch the Mercury and who cares?

Over the final 10 games of the season the Mercury have by far a much more difficult strength of schedule than the Fever.

Currently the Sun would be meeting the Fever while Cheryl and the Lynx would face the Mercury.

I'm guessing Stephanie and Cheryl aren't concerned with either team but if push comes to shove they might rather face the Mercury. I mean Lexi Hull maybe giving those coaches nightmares.

Ok, on reflection it really doesn't matter.

Second place in the W may come down to the pre-ultimate season matchup between the Sun and the Lynx. That is the most consequential matchup of the remainder of the season with home court advantage in the balance.

As to last place in the playoffs and an opponent for Stewie I know the league is really rooting for Angel.
Tonight might be a tiny step in that direction.....

Yep

Costly loss at home for Seattle against Washington. The race for 4th/5th just got real interesting.

Definitely. Kudos to Washington for grinding it out to get the win. Hopefully Austin's injury isn't serious but the way that ankle rolled, it didn't look good. :(

Searching for home court advantage in the first round. While this game didn't show it Seattle has a much better home court record then their upcoming playoff opponent so they may need the home court more than the Aces.

Down the stretch the Storm face two losses against the Liberty offset against two wins against the Mercury. After splitting with the Sun the Storm may have to beat an Aces team with the home court advantage to advance to a semi round loss against the Liberty.

Just like the desire to see Angel and the Sky in the playoffs I think we'd all like to see an Aces Liberty rematch.

Seattle had zero energy. Of course, the post-game presser for Seattle was interesting. The WNBA don't fine players for their language during post games anymore?

Maybe it will come later? It hasn't been 24 hours.

Something to monitor for tomorrow.

Her only shot a horrible three-point attempt missed the hoop by at least a foot.

She, Smith and Hull were........ Unspeakably inept

Dantas and Fagbenle gave Mitchell and Clark the little help they needed to take care of the Dream who will find themselves in a nightmare on the road as August comes to a close.

We can be confident the Wing will not break the century mark this evening as the W's leading scoring offense meets the worst scoring defense.

Wondering if the Ace's will break the century mark however. (They put up 95 and 104 in their previous victories over the defenseless Wings)

If the Wings put forth the same defensive effort that they did against the Spark, Kelsey, Jackie, and Aja might all top 30.

Hull gave valuable minutes. I don't know what you're talking about. Sure, she minimally contributed on offense, but she was essential on the defensive side and was a key reason they held the Dream to 79 points.

Hull is getting better with her defense. It speaks volumes about a player who gives up her offense to focus on her defense. She is no defensive stopper yet, but Hull is slowly developing into a defensive force out there.

Nobody wants the #4 spot? Aces get outscored 32-21 in Q4 to drop a 3 point loss to the hapless Wings. I was thinking w/ the way LV plays defense, Sabally, Howard and Ogunbowale were probably all gonna go for 20+. They did, combined for 72. Wasted a 42 point effort from Wilson (16-22 FG 10-13 FT). The Aces are just not a good team anymore. I don't understand what happened. They are significantly worse since the All Star/Olympic break than they were before.

Once again, Becky refuses to take responsibility for her poor game plan and substandard rotations. Now, I can see why the report came out about her not being NBA coaching material. She's barely WNBA coaching material at this point.

When KP, Chelsea, and Jackie are getting cooked, take one of them out and put Syd in. Syd actually tries to defend. I'm still wondering where Jackie's reputation as a top wing defender came from because...no. Consistency matters.

Aces were 34-6 last year. They are currently 18-12. That's 11 games worse.
