2018 wins needed for NCAA bid

After our RPI takes a hit after we play (and hopefully sweep) Memphis, we will see if they still have us hosting.

The Memphis series is on the road, so that should somewhat mitigate the possible hit in the RPI. At least Memphis is currently on the right side of 200 in the RPI.

Hell we gained a spot last night and we weren’t even playing ;) (Helped that Tulane knocked off #11/#13 Southern Miss on the road)

Relatively new to following UConn baseball over the past few years, seen a few people mention a team hosting as a #2 seed. What scenario does that happen for a team?

No one can answer that for you. There is no written criteria. The selection committee will pick the 16 #1 seeds and the 16 sites. Normally the #1 seeds are also the home teams, but a few years ago we played in Norwich as a #2 seed because the committee wanted the playoffs to have a location in the Northeast, which is rare.

I thought it was that we were expected to be a #1 seed and we already had the bid locked up but fell into a second seed at the last second.

Watching a baseball game was like getting checked for gonorrhea. But, now that UCONN is having a good season, it still sucks, but I enjoy cheering for UCONN. Go Huskies!

Norwich Bracket
1 UConn vs. 4 St John’s
3 Northeastern vs. 2 Vanderbilt

You didn’t like this one?
D1baseball.com still has UConn hosting in Norwich as the #11 overall seed.

Also in Norwich are Vanderbilt (#2), Northeastern (#3) and St. John's (#4).

ECU hosting as #16 overall seed. USF, Houston and UCF also in the field. Hartford, Yale and Quinnipiac also projected to make the field at this point.

The SEC leads the way in overall bids with 11, while the rest of the conferences break down like this: ACC (6), Big Ten (6), American (5), Big 12 (5), Pac 12 (3), Conference USA (2), Atlantic Sun (2) and Missouri Valley (2).

(1) Great pitching by Feole and Wallace. Feole really stepping up as Friday night pitcher. Will be a big bonus once Cate gets back

(2) Got our 20th road win.

(3) Tied with ECU for best record vs top 50 teams ( 8-5)

(4) Still " all green " below

(5) Only 1 game out of first in loss column

Doing what we need to do vs last place Memphis on road. Would love to get our first AAC weekend sweep, which sets up next weekend for a first place showdown with Houston.

(1) We are 8-2 in last 10 games

(2) Best AAC record vs top 50 teams (9-5)

(3) Have least loses in AAC play with 6

(4) Second in country with 21 road wins ( Wagner -22)

Any word on when Cate will be back??

Chris Jones was very noncommittal during today's game on when Tim Cate might be back. UConn has done very well without him, but they could really use him, especially since the post season is now not too far off.

I think they are being vary careful with Tim Cate, they should as he will be in the MLB if he can stay healthy. I am amazed that they have been able to win as many conference series without him.

If the NCAA seeds baseball like they do basketball, UConn doing what it has without Cate, and probably getting him back for the postseason should improve our stock. This team is even better than it seems, and it seems pretty damned good. Need to play well vs. Houston, and finish no worse than 2nd in the AAC tournament.

I would try not be overly optimistic about anyone's MLB chances. It's a hard road through the minors to get a sniff at the major leagues. Not trying to be critical but Cate has some attributes that work against him in that endeavor (height, stamina concerns, only one plus pitch, etc.). Regardless he should be drafted in June, however I am not certain as high as everyone is currently envisioning.

Would have loved a sweep of Memphis, but I would be satisfied if we continue to take 2 of 3 vs Houston and ECU. Have 2 road New England games prior to Houston this weekend. Northeastern is going to be a tough one, but we can't lay an egg vs SH.

Still "all Green" below.

The weather is looking good for UConn playing 2 midweek games this week. With all the rainouts and cancellations, the amazing thing is this will be the first time all season that UConn has played 2 midweek games. With Cate not having pitched in quite some time and Gardner on limited innings as a starter due to his injury, this could very well put a big strain on UConn's pitching staff. With Kersten needed for the weekend, I would think Dunlop will get one of these starts, and the other one will be a staff day, perhaps started by Joe Simeone.

At this point, even if Cate does come back to the starting rotation soon, it doesn't seem likely that he will be his old self and capable of going 7 or 8 innings every start. I may be proving to be a worry wart here, but this is a big concern for the post season, both in terms of the AAC conference tournament and the NCAA tourney. Both tournaments pretty much require that a team have 4 or 5 starters that can give you a bunch of innings, and that is the model UConn had in the beginning of the season with both Cate and Gardner healthy. It is not the case at this point of the season, so to me it is definitely a big point of concern with the post season ready to take off in about 2 weeks.

I'm inclined to think that if UConn had a healthy Cate UConn would have swept Memphis. As it is, it is rather amazing that with the injuries to the starting pitching that the Huskies have been able to take as many AAC series as they have.

If Cate is ready to come back I would suggest 3-4 innings on Wednesday's game to shake some rust.
Then start Sunday's game vs Houston

Chris Jones did not sound like Tim Cate would necessarily be back for the Houston series. Hence, my concern about the post season.

If he’s not ready to start maybe he can be the third bullpen piece

Good thought. It had crossed my mind as well. I recall that Anthony Kay one year was used this way during one particular AAC tourney, and I thought it worked out well.

If he could give us the middle innings which has been a weakness now that Karsten is starting.

If Cate was throwing off a mound a few weeks ago and has yet to appear in any sort of rehab appearance (ie out of the bullpen), I would guess that he had some kind of set back. At this point, we may want to just assume he is out for the season.
