Here we go again

Based on research of teams that made tourney over last few years, I came up with my unscientific path for the baseball team to get an at large bid.

I am assuming we play 60 games prior to NCAA. I included 4 games of AAC tourney play ( this can vary). Based on 60 games I came up with the 3 criteria we need to meet (or exceed) to get a bid. Obviously this does not guarantee a bid , but from past history it would place us in great position.

I hope some of you enjoy this. It keeps me interested in season . Also thanks to all of you that post live updates of games. With work can't always follow team on radio or gametracker. Many of you know much more about the team then I do. I enjoy your micro posts, while my posts are more of a macro view.

Go HUSKIES

The 3 Criteria

(1) minimum 37 wins
(2) RPI less then 50
(3) Top 4 team in AAC regular season

I would like to ask 1 things

Thanks Butch ( and Gaupo), had no idea. I was at UConn in the Corny Thompson / Randy LaVigne era, so that went right over my head.

It's a heart shape

What did the chart say last year?

I recall being upset at what I believed to be a snub...

I was upset also. We met 2 of my 3 criteria. Had a RPI of less than 50 ( at 42). We tied for 3rd in regular season conference standings. But we only had 33 wins. With an overall record of 33-25. The 3 AAC teams to make tourney had 40 or more wins.
We lost a bunch of mid week games to teams we should beat. I think this has really hurt us. Hoping with what seems like deeper starting pitching options, we should have better success in mid week.

Never like posting after a loss, so waited till after today's game for first update. Was hoping ( at minimum) to get 2 wins this weekend, so we have a chance to accomplish that tomorrow. Figuring last night with our pre-season all American pitching, we would get a win. But baseball is a funny game. Nice win today, with Feole pitching a great game. A win tomorrow would be big.

PS. Another reason I did not post last night, is that I was at Hockey game. Most exciting UConn game ( any sport) , I have been to in last few years.

I had no idea either. The Corny Thompson era was my time at UConn as well.
Dbmill, I lived in Batterson, a house in West Wilmington and then at Carriage house. Heading to womens game, will post later this evening. Hopefully after a win over GTech

Three years in New London Hall in the Jungle, a year in the Frats (Russell), and then the old Grad Dorms (or Connecticut Commons) as they became known. During my years in the grad dorms, on Saturday mornings starting around 8 or 9am when a home football game was taking place I would always be serenaded by the marching band.

First would like to thank everyone that posted today. Was at women's game and you guys kept me updated. Nice weekend for UConn sports. Hockey wins ( best UConn game I have been to in years), Men and women win. Also baseball team takes 2 of 3 to start season.

I know we blew a 7-1 lead, but a gutsy win that can mean a lot down the road. GTech may not be a great team, but playing in the ACC their RPI should be decent.

Agreed. The hockey team has much the same problem. Playing well against the good teams on your schedule is great, as long as you take care of business against the weaker teams. Need to do a better job of that this year.

Some observations from weekend.

(1) Thanks to all of you again, who post updates. Had a stag Fri and a bday party yesterday. So between you guys and Twitter , I was able to keep up to date

(2) Won another series ( taking 2 of 3). Will sign up for that right now for rest of year.

(3) Who would have thought we would be 4 - 2, and losing in both games that Cate started.

(4) Losing first game twice and coming back to win the next 2, shows a toughness to this team.

(5) Big weekends for Susi, Pratto and PJ.

(6) Even tough WAY to early to be significant. We have the lowest RPI in the AAC

(7) Only need to go 6 - 5 in " Other games" category to reach our goal. I would be very disappointed if we did not do better than 6 -5.

I wouldn't pay much attention to the RPI until a couple more weekends go by. It just looks so screwed up this early in the season, just have to let things settle down first.

My impression from last year was that our weekend starters were bosses and our weekday starters were getting beat up by the local schools. I hope we have a little more pitching depth this season. One early positive is that we usually start slow, which does not appear to be the case so far this year.

Thanks for doing this again, @ucjoet!

It would seem that the plan from the preseason was for JUCO Jeff Kersten to take over as the main midweek starter. From what I have seen so far from his relief appearances, I don't think this plan has changed any.

Our inability to crush really bad midweek pitching was also a big issue with last year's team, IMO.

If he gets 6-7 innings as a midweek starter, will they still give him time as a middle reliever on the weekends?

Right now Kersten is getting that relief time since there is no need yet for a midweek starter. That will change soon. He might get an inning here or there, but not the long relief assignments.

I think Rossomondo could be the key for a succesfull bullpen.

I didn’t follow Warren Nolan RPI until a few weeks into the season last year. At what point does it usually sort itself out to actually represent the best teams?
