Xavier Post Game Thread

I’m an eternal huskies optimist and hope we push through. We need to stack good wins starting now.

AK is inherently not a 1st option and needs Liam to open the floor. The scout is out to just deny ball on the quick shot or double, and force the paint floater.

Aiden and Samson had great games however have faults that can’t close a game.

The sophomore class needs to find something; we’re a victim of our own success with all the NBA talent that left early. Whenever I see Ross on the floor I expect something bad to happen.

We have potential but need Liam at full force back quickly.

I seethe at seeing Xavier fans rejoice with their mediocre team.

Ross and Stewart are not stepping up when they have the opening to with McNeeley is out. They need to get it together asap or they will end up sitting a lot when McNeeley comes back
I don't see Ross stepping up unless it is on the defensive end. Stewart is the one that can step it up on offense but his defense stinks. They cannot be morphed into 1 player unfortunately. So it is what it is this year.

Not only do we need Liam back, but he has to be back without any regressions due to his injury.

Not sure what game you watched. Ross gets blown by time and time again, then tries to block shot from behind. That’s his defense. Above average defender, no way

and his BBIQ must be next to zero. No way he should have had the ball at the end of shot clock, but should know time left and at least shoot so there is a chance for a rebound.

Great defense by him on the inbounds after the shot clock violation. Horse collars his man.
This is basically Ross’ entire defensive strategy. Get beat off the dribble, chase and block from behind. It’s not exactly following the fundamentals of good defense.

The assumption was AK would be our consistent leader - would average 15-20+ ppg, would take the clutch shots, etc. It hasnt happened. LM fits that role better. As a result, we currently have an erratic Ball and not much more to depend on. What a disappointing season so far. No one is stepping up!!

Some tough convos ahead this offseason. Not sure how patient Hurley can be with the roster/development. We cant make the same portal mistakes 2 yrs in a row.
Would you call Reed and Mahaney mistakes? If we had another pg aside from Diarra then Mahaney could play more off the ball.

Think it's more so the sophomores who haven't stepped up, AK and Hass are solid players and leaders but not all American players. Team was built to not have much margin for error, lost 4 starters. Just would've been nice if we brought in another pg transfer.

Who is this guy and did he end up being a good player here or did he transfer because it was a sign he couldn’t cut it because Calhoun gave you room to breathe if he thought you were good.

I hope you aren’t making up the fact that this guy played a little too if you are talking about Deandre Daniels who started at the beginning of the year.
Scott Hazelton.

I think you need to revisit Marcus Williams freshman year (and everything the team did and did not have that season).

Also, in this board's predecessor, there were constant complaints that we weren't playing Kemba enough during his freshman year (when we did have a number of experienced guards).

JC showed zero patience outside of situations where he had no choice.

Hurley recruited Mahaney to be our starting point guard. It was a big miss.

Also the Big East style of no freedom of movement and rewarding bully-ball / iso play is awful. We got some calls tonight on off ball holding but it’s ridiculous. The BET at MSG is the best but outside of that it’s getting tough to enjoy.

Please stop wasting my time with these stupid examples. Scott Hazelton was a bad player period. He wasn’t a guy who was on a short leash BECAUSE he was a freshman.

Kemba Walker AVERAGED 25 minutes a game.

If you look at that Rutgers full game I posted Marcus Williams was in the game within the last two minutes ON THE ROAD IN THE BIG EAST.

You are literally making stuff up and it’s stupid.

That's kind of my point it's not the fact that it was Mahaney it's the fact he was brought in to be the starting pg was the mistake. Would be a huge difference seeing Mahaney play off the ball.

We don't have an NBA kid on the floor. End of games will be heart attacks.
Solo and AK will play in the NBA. Tarris has the talent to make it but we're not using him right. We badly need our best NBA prospect back.

Yup.

Expected this one, so not hard to stomach. Lot of regurgitating the same complaints over and over around here.

A big question now is what of this team are we rolling into next year that instills any confidence? While we have all fancied this staff could turn anyone to gold, the cold harsh reality is that assessment is much more important than development. No coach can make wine out of water and it seems the staff has overvalued both personnel and their ability to develop, which has lead to some laziness on the assessment side.

They’re going to have to make some tough tough decisions that may go off script if they want any chance next year. I would have zero confidence rolling into next year with this returning core, and freshman. There is a big gap in gray matter with this group.

I
He’s terrible defensively and has flashes for sure. But do you think he’s played well this year? This is his first poor performance? He’s been scoreless four times in the last nine games and he has, by far, the worst +/- on the team.
Nice strawman. I said he’d be a productive player here and I’m not ready to write him off. Not that he’s been amazing this year or that it’s his first poor performance. Go way back and you’ll see I said the same thing about Isaiah Whaley when he was buried on the bench. Time will tell.

We didn’t build championship rosters through the portal and it won’t work doing that in the future.

It’s okay to get pieces from it but the foundation has to be highly talented kids you recruit. Unless you get highly talented kids from the portal like a Reed.

Tarris has nothing that resembles NBA skill translation. He’s a 1990s PF, a position that is literally all but obsolete in today’s game.

Can't really read through all this. Granted some players who aren't experienced with producing on a consistent level, especially during winning time, didn't come through. Many want to blame Ross who has a lot of potential but is simply too inexperienced.

This is not blaming the loss on this player, but we win that game if Ball hits his makeable 3s which he went 3-11. He did a lot of good things, had some bad moments on D, but to win that type of game, he has to knock down at least 2 more 3s on that volume of takes.

And honorable mention for why we lost is Karaban, the team leader, going 4-13 and 1-6 from deep and fouling out. The players many want to blame this loss on should not have been on the floor late in that game and/or counted upon if he could have been on the floor and more productive.

I realize that many of us, including me, thought this team looked so deep and talented before we started to face high level competition, but the fact is, for whatever reason, the games are just too big for many of the less experienced players to step up when the more experienced ones aren't producing. Of course things would be different if McNeeley was playing, but the collective, both experienced and inexperienced need to step up to get the W in these winnable games.

Wow! Yet again another L, other than the Dayton game, where we lost by 1 or 2 possessions and had opportunities to flip the score late. The margin of error is so narrow. Ball just connecting on one of those late 3s changes the outcome of that game. Ross would not have been in that position if Solo connected on one of them.

To end this on a positive note, which probably only makes me feel a little better, Mahaney, although had a few bad moments, played very well and looked good running the half court offense. I hope he can continue to build on that. He's been the Boneyard punching bag for most of the season. Nice to see him punch back.

Were 3 of our top 6 players last year not through the portal?

Like Tristen or Cam.
Yes. Tristen was brought in to compliment the core of Andre, Hawkins, and Sanogo. Then those 2 guys were the main perimeter scorers with guys like Castle and Clingan giving us extreme talent advantages in every game we went into.

Like Illinois where Newton can not make a FG but it doesn’t matter because Castle and Clingan completely take out one of best players in the country in Shannon.

For God's sake Danny, give Abraham some minutes to show what he's got!! This team is bereft of playmakers & energizers. He cant hurt.

Add Samson to the positive note. He's string along a few games now where he's playing incredibly well.

Pretty sure I just watched Mahaney create his own shot about 6 or 7 times, leading to all 14 of his points.
He played great - also created into kickouts. I’d say the one silver lining in this game, along with Solo’s rebounding(where did that come from?!?).

I’ll say this with Solo, while his defense remains a catastrophe, you do see him intentionally working on the other gaps in his game (taking ball to hoop, rebounding), which is nice to see. Meanwhile I have no idea what Stew and Ross are working on.

What the hell did Hurley draw up in that timeout....
"That last possession was regrettable," Hurley said, "and a failure to execute something."

"We were trying to get the ball to Aidan there," Hurley explained. "When they're switching out, the guy has to screen his own man. We were hoping to get that ball to Samson (to kick it out). Besides Solo, with Alex fouled out, in terms of options, we wanted the ball in Aidan's hand. When you're switching, you've got to screen your own man so that Aidan can then get to the ball and get downhill, where he had success."

Johnson wound up hitting Ross on a throwback.

"If that pass is on target, he has a chance to shoot a 3 to win, and maybe we get out of that with a win," Hurley rued. "Frustrating."

Had a chance, but not a good one based on how Ross has shot this season.

The carry was on Solo
And not long after I watched one of Xavier's players do the very same thing, dribble the ball at head level...with silence from the officials. And I hate complaining about officials. If this was last year's team it wouldn't much matter because they were so dominant but this year a bad whistle here, a blown call there, can literally make the difference between a win of a loss.

We're obviously not going to roll with the same team next season so I don't know why people keep posting our roster for next season and why people keep complaining we won't have enough.

Maybe this isn't the time or place, but why do we never do 2-for-1's in the final minute of the game? We've played in enough close games this year where I always wonder what the deal is.
I mean if you feel like you're forcing a play into 10 seconds to make the 1st possession of your two work, well our possessions look rushed by the time we actually get a shot off anyway.
Is the 2 for 1 a dinosour in the sport now? I'd like to think someone still values it out there.
