OT: World Cup

Everyone in the 11 yesterday except Zimmerman has been playing in the Euro leagues.

I would have pulled off Sargent and put on another midfielder to transition to a 4-4-2.

Then we would have more space for a counter because Wales would need to push more men up to attack.

Herc Gomez pointed out that the back line had too much pressure making a mistake all but inevitable. Instead we subbed like for like and made no formation adjustments.

Berhalter didn’t do anything to help the team yesterday.

Except he did. He subbed Acosta for Musah moving from a single 6 to a double 6. Which is sbout all he could do.

He also subbed Yedlin for Dest, who is better defensively than the erratic Dest.

If Zimmerman doesn't make a boneheaded challenge, they win.

There are plenty of reasons to dump on GGG. Reyna, for one. Not pressing in the 2nd half, another. The defensive subs were fine. Morris was useless, would have been better to sub in Long as a third CB at the 70-75 mark. Lots of second guessing is possible because of a cheap giveaway PK.

The match played out as expected, we struggle to score or even create in possession and are weak defending our own box. The rest is pretty much chance.

The only surprise was how dominant the 1st half was.

Exciting game between Germany and Japan. 1-1. Germany controlling, but Japan striking with flare. Japan's goalie had like 5 saves in 20 seconds, then Japan scores to tie it up mins later. Reminds me of our game and would be a huge letdown for zie Germans.

He subbed in Wright for Sargent. It should have been a midfielder and a formation change.

Also I’ve looked at the Zimmerman challenge from other angles and he was actually closer to the ball than Bale. There is a solid argument to be made that it wasn’t a penalty.

This is all on Berhalter not supporting the back line.

spoilers :(

Argentina offsides controversy. After watching Mexico and Poland yesterday, I don't think Argentina has to worry about scoring many goal. Neither Mexico nor Poland can finish.

Now the offsides. They are focusing on the player who scored the goal. But wouldn't Messi be considered offsides anyway even if he didn't touch the ball? He was still kind of involved in the play since he was running alongside Martinez

Can't wait to watch Davies later today. Love his game.

Wish Halaand was in the World Cup. I think he would smash the goal scoring records

What a game by Japan
Japan has always had a dangerous counter-attack game, but Germany just blew too many chances and didn't tighten things up.

Japan looked so so good. Wanted to see how far each man ran. What a performance

Haaland needs service. His national team isn’t exactly Man City

No, no there's not. Maybe a stupid argument it wasn't a penalty. But definitely not a solid argument.

No. Messi is in an offside position. But he didn't play the ball. Nor was he interfering with an opponent. So he wouldn't be sanctioned for an offside offense.

Spain is just cruising. Costa Rica is a much weaker side than it was several years ago, but they aren't terrible. So Spain looking quite strong.

Upon review, Zimmerman did have an angle as the ball was coming across the box. If Zimmerman had gotten a foot on the ball a fraction of a second sooner...Yes, it's a penalty but I don't think it was as egregious. Zimmerman kinda has to go for the ball there which he did.

Zimmerman was actually first to the ball but Bale slid across and his leg came over the top of Zimmerman's. I think Zimmerman got jobbed.

Zimmerman: "The ball gets down to the end line, I see it get cut back and at that point, I’m dropping down and on the way to step out and clear the ball, I don’t see Bale coming across," Zimmerman said after the match. "I think it was one of those where he probably just puts his leg, not for the ball, but to try to get in the way of me hitting the ball. So I kind of went through him and I think I still got the ball, but it was a clever move. I wish I would have seen him out of the corner of my eye when trying to clear the ball, but it was instinctive. It was quick. And I’m a little bit frustrated by that. But sometimes those plays happen."

Spain putting Costa Rica to the sword. They look every bit the tourney favorites they came in as, which is more than you can say for ARG or GER.

It’s definitely not a vintage CRC team, as their core from 2014 and 2018 has gotten pretty old or already retired, but I still thought they’d be a little competitive. Not even close.

Tons of credible people disagree with you. But whatever you say.

This is correct. An MLS guy gets baited by a world class player. That's why it's good to have world class players.

We all knew Bale was going to be a deciding factor for Wales and a bad match up for Zimmerman and Ream.

It's disappointing, not shocking.

Germany Spain will have the intensity of a final. So many huge 2nd games now

It wasn't so much a bait as a flop. But there sure are plenty of world class floppers in these games.

Bale is technically an MLS guy:)

Belgium scores on their second shot after Canada had 12 shots, and a missed PK.

Canada had around 21 shots, but only three on target…plus they missed a PK. Belgium had one chance and put it away.

What a massive bummer for Canada. Really outplayed Belgium in almost all facets but scoring. The early missed PK was a killer.

Also mystified at how that VAR review late in the first half did not result in a PK. Replay showed clear trip by defender.
