OT: World Cup

Wales is a very experienced team that is older and physically stronger - makes a huge difference in soccer
Mediocre? Hardly
Big, tall teams that thrive in the air are really tough on this U.S. team. Aside from Zimmerman, we really aren't much in the air on either end of the pitch. Wales presented real challenges with their size, especially when one of those guys is Bale. Should have been more aggressive in the 2H.

US was fortunate that at least 2 headers from Wales were over the net.

Maybe they watched the Fyre Festival documentaries and got so excited that they turned it off before seeing how it ended. Or Billy McFarland was hired as a consultant? When fact checking this post I saw he was released from his half way house in September, 2022. Coincidence?
There was a story on American Greed just the other night about Fyre and McFarland. He fooled a lot of people.

Maybe Greggg leaving John Brooks off the team was a horrible decision.

Brutal penalty there. No idea for Zimmerman was doing there
Mostly he's realizing the ball went out of bounds. Whole team caught off guard that it wasn't a throw in.

USA controlled the game but at the same time created very few chances. In one point in the second half I think I heard the announcer state it was the Wales keeper's first save of the game. USA finished with just 5 shots and 1 on goal. Against England that makes for a long afternoon.

The ref was handing out yellow cards to USA like fun coupons while USA was getting tackled all over the pitch.

I agree. McKennie got the ball first. The only one that was clear cut was Ream's and it purposely used to stop a breakaway attack.

Lewa pen saved by Ochoa… would’ve been nice to see L Tri go behind despite definitely being the better side all game. It’s been a similar run so far to the US game. Minus the goal, they likewise had the much better of the first half. Unlike the US game, outside the pen, they’ve largely kept the pressure up in the second.

I'm having a brutal WC. I have merch for 3 teams and they all lost: Argentina, Senegal and USA.

Australia knocking off France would be another huge upset. French Kit is excellent though.

France back in control.
There's an awful lot of offensive firepower on that squad. Just clearly the better team. But so was USA and they managed to butt fumble it away.

Yea but Didier >>>>> Greg

Yet Wales wasn't fortunate that the US twice hit wood in the first half, Right?

The next game for the US will be the decider. If we don't get a point off of England (assuming Wales beats Iran), we are going home. The order in which you play teams is almost as important as who you play. Wales getting to play England last is a huge advantage for Wales as England might be content with a draw if it sees them win the group.

I was very impressed with the aggressive play of KSA. Full out effort for what seemed like an extra long game. Contrast that with the U.S. sleepwalking for the entire second half. Very disappointing and frustrating. Can’t say I’m a big fan of the Kingdom, but great effort by them.

The bulk of the US hasn't been playing. 90-100 min of full out play likely isn't possible. That is also on GGG, but with 5 subs there really is no excuse. Maybe Zimmerman should have been subbed off, but Robinson, Pulisic, Adams, Ream, didn't seem to have issues with fitness. The subs, save for Aaronson and Acosta didn't impact the match at all. Yedlin had just as many gaffes as Dest. Wright and Morris did nothing.

Everyone in the 11 yesterday except Zimmerman has been playing in the Euro leagues.

I would have pulled off Sargent and put on another midfielder to transition to a 4-4-2.

Then we would have more space for a counter because Wales would need to push more men up to attack.

Herc Gomez pointed out that the back line had too much pressure making a mistake all but inevitable. Instead we subbed like for like and made no formation adjustments.

Berhalter didn’t do anything to help the team yesterday.
